If you don't have it, tell Santa... What a nice piece of work. "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" just slays me! A playful, jazzy treatment with killer speed pickin'! Jeez, I wish I could block so clean (I'm working on it boss! {to my well known teacher who reads but doesn't post}). Same goes for "Jingle Bells", 90 MPH!. The more ballad-like (slower?) tunes are beautifully layered with several steel tracks and done very tastefully (go figure?). I have no idea when the CD was made. No date anywhere that I can find. The coolest thing for me personally is that Paul did it in his home studio and takes full credit for "Engineering mistakes" (no mastering engineer listed, was it PF too?). And perhaps even cooler is the equipment list, which closes with; "No digital or analog effects were used on this CD. Pure Steel and Amplification". I unplugged my rack the same day. Now I'm going from the Mullen direct to NV400 (but I might miss that delay ). Anyway, great Christmas CD. Regards, -Dave [This message was edited by Dave Horch on 11-15-99] |

PF's Christmas Album was released just last year about this time as I recall; an excellent work of "cottage industry" from someone who should have been able to get it released on a MAJOR lable thank you very much... PF's version of Deck the Halls just slays me!! Shades of the west coast... |

I keep it in my CD player pretty much year-round. Deck the Halls is fast becoming my favorite cut, although his version of What Child is This knocks me out, too. I think he also plays bass and keyboards on a lot of the cuts. Dave, you and I don't always agree, but on this we do, this album SHOULD be a Christmas staple at every music store in the country. I agree with you Les (never thought you'd hear that, did you ) This is one of my favorite albums, period. I love all the songs, but I replay 'What Child is This' almost every time I listen to the CD. ------------------ |

Time flies when you’re having fun. DVA, I would almost swear that the CD was released two years back, in ’97, around this time of year. Whatever year it was, Jingle Bells has never been the same since. ------------------ |

The CD was released before Christmas 1997. I got it a few weeks late because Canada Post went on strike (again!) in late December. I play it at least once a month! it's marvelous!!

The way PF throws that little phrase in there from Carol of the Bells, during What Child is This" I wish he'd do another CD, with stuff like "Holly and the Ivy", "Carol of the Bells", (can you imagine that thing done with harmonics, and on several tracks!???), Silent Night (in the same vein as Away in a Manger, which makes me get a lump in my throat). Maybe throw in Little Drummer Boy just for fun; Can you actually wear out a CD?? Les |

“Get You Some” Department (for Santa’s helpers or informants); Don has the correct address, the phone number for STIGITAR RECORDS (according to the CD insert) is 615-865-4754 (in USA). I would think that any major steel shop might have a few around (isn’t that a shame, like DVA and others commented!). I got my copy from Billy Coopers shop last Friday. Try www.billycoopersmusic.com Les… A sequel?! Who knows?? I totally agree with your thoughts on that! (and I also think we are not so far apart on other things as well). Regards (now lets go work on our blocking!) –Dave [This message was edited by Dave Horch on 11-16-99] |

It's not the availability at STEEL SPECIALTY VENDORS I was griping about- it's the stunning fact that this fine musician who plays on approx. 80% of today's top country records (with steel guitar in them ) isn't on a MAJOR NATIONAL LABEL as an artist in his own right... |

It is a great CD. Paul's technique is incredible. In places, it's almost as if his brain works in a different time-scale from most of us. There's even a "classical" arrangment on it - a baroque-ish version of "We Wish You A Merry Christmas". Plus you get to hear Paul as a record producer, making all of the mixing decisions as only a fellow steel player can. This is certainly one to put on deck to fill your home with holiday spirit. And it's great steel playing as well! What can I say but "highly recommended". ------------------ [This message was edited by Bobby Lee on 12-08-99] |

I was in the studio last night cutting a little Christmas tune, and thought I'd finish it this morning. Big mistake. I put on Paul's cd when I got home last night, and it makes it tough deciding whether I am inspired or depressed this morning . |

This really is a great album isn't it, if it doesn't become a steel classic, there's no Santa Claus. The more I listen to it, the more I hear; and the music and arrangements have the quality of sticking in your head long after it's finished playing. Makes me eager for Paul to cut and release another album. The stuff on his web-site and the stuff played at the convention would more than make up a good one IMHO. BTW, the album sells from the web-site too at |

Yeap, this is an incredible work and is done the way I like it--steel as the only lead instrument! Paul played nearly every instrument on the recording and recorded it in his home studio and he did the engineering. It is now in my car's CD player and is very inspiring with all that cool and impossible phrasing. This one is a must have and it would make a great gift. I may have to buy some to give to some non-musicians as a gift. Cool idea! Frank ------------------ |

A total must, I play it through the year, The guy is incredable. There is alot of different idea's or different ways he uses the steel for each song! Greg |

I'm happy to report that I just got it - as an early Chistmas gift; my wife said it was "just a stocking-filler" - I said "This'll do very nicely as my 'main present'...." It's remarkable, isn't it? I was on a tour with Joe Wright many years ago in the UK and he was enthusing about the 'pick-blocking principal'; at the time I was unconvinced - I think 'Jingle Bells' proves his point.... |
