Just thought that "The tune you're most asked to play?" would be an interesting topic, and also how many times do you think you've played it?. I wonder does it vary from state to state and country to country ?. Just to start it off,....here in Ireland it seems to be Rose of San-Antone, Steel Guitar Rag, and Hawaii Tattoo. Basil Henriques. |

I've been asked to play steel guitar rag most often. The first million times I played it I enjoyed it, but now I refuse to play it. John |

Definitelt Steel Guitar Rag.. I agree with John. I began to play around it just to find how many ways I could find. It's surprizing just how many ways you can play it. Even the guys in the group get a kick out of it. ... Billy |

Yes, SGRag by far. After a short homage to the original melody, it's off to the races; anything goes. I wish I had the nerve to do the LDG version but then I'd be asked on the next break when I was gonna play Steel Guitar Rag... ![]() ------------------ Website updated to accommodate Nutscrape Navigator. |

Here in L.A. S G Rag is "The song they play on the instrument" meaning the ONLY song that is is possible to play on the instrument. I never want to play it again. I never want to hear it again played by anybody else. I don't even want to know it exists. BTW, Does anybody know who wrote it? (It WASN'T Leon McCuliffe) [This message was edited by Mike Perlowin on 28 February 2000 at 12:02 PM.] |

Usually, it's SGR, but of late, I started doing Buddy's tune, "Wills Point". So now they ask for SGR and then come back up and ask for "That other steel song you play". What next? ------------------ |

It seems that SGR is so far,the most requested (or played) tune. Which version is the next question,I favour the Texas Troubadors one that wanders off to “G” for a while with some nice harmony bits from the steel and lead guitarists. BTW and at an accute tangent, could anyone suggest where I can get a Emmons D-10 re-furbished.I needs quite a few parts ( the catalogue #s of which I sent to the Emmons factory) only to be told to “Call in” I would appreciate being put in contact with someone sympathetic to my needs? Thanx a lot b0b, I thought the forum would be a handy way to get an average of the popular songs to include on a future album of myself, but who'd buy an album with 11 versions of SGR and a v e r y slow Orange Blossom Special? |

SGR of course. And mine has been called a resemblance to a monkey cage in the Chief's Club by a marine. This happened when I was putting it together and the upside down resemblance caught that marine's attention. Told him he should recognize that. you can even ask Sleepy John if you want. HO HO. |

Hey b0b, Wasn't it you that told me that great Haiku?: If I've heard it once, As to "What IS that thing?" -- one guy wondered if it was some kind of mixer board. ------------------ |

It'd have to be Steel Guitar Rag and I play it every time it's requested and still enjoy it. I've changed it over the years by playing it faster and also by adding a C chord for the 2nd 2 bars. It adds a lot to the sound. I stole the change from a great steel man (now deceased) by the name of Art Sanchez who I worked with in Southern California in 1977. After the inital melody this is a great tune to practice speed picking licks and scales. Even if you hate the song some good can come out of playing it that way..................Hey S Pickins, The lyrics only to SGR were written by Merle Travis and Cliffie Stone. The original melody came from an old tune called Guitar Rag by some old black blues player I think I read somewhere. ------------------ [This message was edited by Jerry Hayes on 28 February 2000 at 05:10 PM.] |

Pumpkin from Ty herdon's band was telling me he use to keep a kotex that said steel guitar rag on it, with a magic marker. When ask to play steel guitar rag he would say " here's your steel guitar rag! |

Mike Perlowin Member Posts: 6371 |
Jerry is correct. SG rag was written and first recorded by blues singer and slide guitarist Sylvester Weaver in 1923 under the title "Guitar Rag". I wonder if Weaver ever received any royalties from the many recordings of the tune. |

Yeah, db, people always ask me to play far, far, away, too. Or to play up on the roof, or sometimes down in the boondocks, or away in a manger. A lot of times in clubs people will approach me at the stage and ask me to play on the road again. Usually, they really mean far, far away. ![]() |

I play in nursing homes here and there. I once had an older gentleman ask me if I could play "third man theme"(or something similar). I have never heard of this song. Anybody? The other favorite request is "Tiny Bubbles". One of my favorites is "I love you so much it hurts me". Jimmy Day really played that song wonderfully, DJ. |

My New Found Friends on the Forum (NF3’s) not to be referred to as “Newfies” (HA) have made my day. In response, and by way of a teaser!! I have up-loaded the FULL version of Swedish Rhapsody to my web site. It’s not listed on any page, but it’s there ( Please only for forum members ) http://homepage.tinet.ie/~basilh/swedishrhapsody.mp3 don’t give the url to others, especially critics or those with Sammy Mitchell or Billy Bell record collections!! They were playing in the UK when I was, but alas ........RIP In answer to those who ask where I’m from .......Born in the UK Irish parents, ancestry goes back to 900 in ireland and the family is originally from portugal. The Name was Anglicised, Bastardised turned into Irish, back to english and I honestly don’t know what to call myself (Others may) The Name in its many variations is Henriques Hendrick(s) Henrick et al. and the first Sheriff of Dublin was a Hendrick (Hence Hendrick’s Lane) Just behind the Four Courts. I suppose with a Sheriff as an ancestor Country Music should be my preference (But It’s not) Steel Guitar is in all of it’s hetrogenieties . We tend to ramble on a little here in Ireland, my apologies, I’ll ramble off. |

My most requested instrumental is "Ten Thousand Years" and next is "Hot Mocking Bird" then "Steel Guitar Rag". I always try to play a requested song even if I am tired of it. I would rather play a request anytime so I know at least one person will enjoy it. Jerry |

A song I haven't learned yet, "Something Else." When ever we're playing, we always seem to get 2 or 3 requests, "Hey, can't you guys play Something Else?" |

Hi Jay , To answer your question :- The program. is E-Magic 'Logic Audio Platinum" and the sound card used is the " Audiowerk 8 " card. I use no amp on the steel and input it thru a Yamaha Promix 01. via a morley pedal (photocell) ALL The sounds of the backing except for the accoustic guitars , are a Roland " Sound Canvas SC-155 which I either wrote the parts in "Logic" or played into the sequencer via a Casio PG 310 MIDI guitar I used an EMMONS D-10 PP with george L's (5 position switch variety) No Pre-Amp and NO EQ of any sort (flat frequency responce even on mixdown) the reverb is one of the 32 built-in plug-in effects in "Logic" The tunings are ones that I've used since I started playing pedal steel and not counting the E9th neck of my steel, are realy an approximation of the tunings used by Jules Ah See etc on the 60-80's era of hawaiian style players. The pedal arrangement is my own development and I first developed it on a Fender 1000 that I bought in '62.You can see the pedal arrangement on my web site on the page :- Young Basil (The steel on the picture is a home-made one that I made when I was 12) BUT below the picture is a diagram of the co-pedant. I used the E9th on , in particular "The Swedish Rhapsody" . It is ideally suited to the tuning as are others on the album |

For years I got asked for SGR and Bud's Bounce- then it seemed people forgot there were instrumentals! Nowadays I guess we're lucky, mostly our band's fans ask for one or another of our originals. As for what folks call the steel- my favorite are the people who stare at it all night, then come up and say "you sure can play that keyboard"...My band leader introduces me as playing "the helicopter of American Musical Instruments"...All these posts mentioning SGR have started me thinking, maybe best for another thread... ------------------ [This message was edited by Mark van Allen on 29 February 2000 at 10:41 AM.] |
