Hi Folks, Buddy described his tone on the above album as 'that sound'. A quick check of Amazon doesn't show a album of that title but I suspect that most or all of the cuts on that appear on some of the other albums listed. Anybody have advice on where to get either the whole album of at least most of the tunes on it? Thanks---Jay |

Jay, I'd like to say that the sound I was referring to was a sound of the times. Today, when Peggy wants to make slaw for dinner, I put some of the old cuts on to help her shred the lettuce. |

Jay A CD compilation that is a total, complete, without a doubt must-get for any steel guitarist or fan of trad. country music is the Bear Family "Ray Price and the Cherokee Cowboys" boxed set. It is 10 CD's containing everything ... everything that still exists, anyway... Ray recorded from his earliest days through "Danny Boy." It also contains a fantastic book with pictures to die for and a lot of the "inside" stuff from guys who were there and have the T-shirt and cap. In the interest of getting to the "real truth," Ray himself was not interviewed, incidentally. All the cool steel stuff from Jimmy, Buddy, and Jack Evins is there. And a complete discography. The complete Western Strings album, the Night Life album, the Touch My Heart album, the Bob Wills album, the Love Life album, the Other Woman album, plus all the great singles like "I'm Not Crazy Yet," "Tearful Earfull," "Curtain in the Window," etc. It's pricey, like $250 retail (less at discount, of course), but really, really worth it. ------------------ |

So Buddy, are you saying the tone was a little on the bright side or did it go all the way to brittle? I assume that even though the amp/recording settings were quite bright that there is still something audible in the sound of the guitar that makes you say,"yeah, that's what I want to hear?" Herb, thanks, I just got the Bear Family ET boxed set 'Another Story' from Buddy Charleton and it is extensive and well done. The steel is so bright and so up front on some of the tunes that you can hear the slightly scratchy sound of Buddy sliding the bar for vibrato. Jay |

Jay, I'd say the tone was bright enough to blister a Beagle's ear at fifty paces. |

That's the slaw shredding tone on "Talk to my Heart" from the George Jones "Live at Dancetown USA" recording... once I heard that i KNEW what some of these guys mean by "bark" What guitar and amp were you using on that Jones live album date Buddy? (if you remember- I know it's a long time since) |

Mike Cass brought the George Jones album over to my house, played it, and killed a four fingers of Crown Royal buzz I had going. I told him to never surprise me like that again. The guitar was a Sho~Bud but I'm not sure about the amp. |

Speaking of Price, I just bought a Columbia "Country Classics" CD, Titled The Essential Ray Price, 1951-1962. I know it's got Don Helms and Jimmy Day on it, not sure but the Pride cut sounds like Buddy, Pride was cut on 1/7/62. Heart over mind also sounds like Buddy, it was cut1/12/61. I don't remember a couple of the early ones, I picked up the album (OK paid for it I didn't pick it up and leave ) at Borders Books. Buddy were you on those cuts??? |

Jay, if you want a really good Ray Price CD that has an excellent version of Touch My Heart and 29 more of the best songs by Ray, find the double CD set by Step One Records called Ray Price Greatest Hits. I got it at Barnes and Nobles for $16.00. Buddy is on all of the cuts. The stock number on the set is SOR-0012/13/14. Larry ------------------ |

Bud, that may well be a beagle blisterin' tone, but it seems as though that's what most guys strive for. Then again, you could always handle "MORE HIGH'S" Coxface |

Well....Excuse me! I liked that tone in 1966, and I STILL like it now! |

Buddy, Touch My Heart will always rate at the top for me. But that sound you got at the convention when you first got the new LeGrande just killed me! I'm still trying to find that sound. Man, It was huge! Me and Cass talked about it for a week after that. Now I'm so confused , I don't know what sound I want anymore! |

"Touch My Heart"? Heck, after hearing Buddy's rendering on it all these years I thought it was "Cut My Heart"! |

I thought it was "Cut my Cheese...." Seriously, I *love* the sound on those albums. ------------------ [This message was edited by Dan Tyack on 01 March 2000 at 09:43 PM.] |

FYI folks, I went out and bought the Step One Ray Price greatest hits that Larry recommended and while there is some good steel playing on it for sure I don't believe it is the original recording of these tunes. The steel along with the rhythm section sound like a modern recording so if you are looking for an example of the lettuce shredding/beagle bleeding tone this ain't it. Some cool stuff on it anyway. |

Jay, Those aren't the original recordings, however I like the new arrangements better than the originals. Buddy's playing is super and I changed the way I played some of those songs because of this record. Bill |

It's a shame when they don't use the original masters to make these re-releases. I recently bought a CD of Merle Haggard's called "20 Hits" by Curb Records. All his old hit songs...and all but 2 "remade" (no doubt to try to improve the quality.) I have NEVER IN MY LIFE been so dissapointed with a CD. The sound, the character, the arrangements, gone, all gone...pity. |

I keep tellin' you guys... the Bear Family set and none other. You won't be disappointed. Trust the Herbster on this one. ------------------ |

Jay, sorry I didn't mention that all the songs were remakes but I think all the arrangements on the CDs are excellent. I have about 25 Ray Price albums including a demo album with the original Touch My Heart on it. The new arrangement is a little bit different but they both sound very good. I used to have a Po Boys album with a steel arrangement of Touch My Heart on it and that was great. Loaned the album to somebody and never saw it again. Would like to find one again. Not sure sure who was playing on it though. The album was recorded around 67. If anybody knows where I can find a copy please let me know. Larry ------------------ |

Herb: My son gave me that Bear Family box set for Christmas a couple of years ago, and you are absotively posilutely correct in every- thing you said about it. If you are a Ray Price, Buddy Emmons, Steel Guitar, or REAL Country Music fan, then this box set is a must! Hey, I've got me some kinda son, ain't I? ------------------ |

Talk about ruining a buzz; I heard an interesting story about a certain steel player I won't mention playing at Tootsies some years ago that was cornered and kissed by Broadway Mae. The story goes he washed his mouth out with a pitcher of beer. Broadway Mae was fairly well known of her love for the pickers back in those days. I wonder what became of that infamous steel player? Incidentally, I was put up to this story. Wraparound,Touch My Heart, where does this story go? |

I also have the Ray Price box set from Bear Family and it is THE ONE TO HAVE. Someone ask about The Po Boys cut of Touch My Heart, I think that was Sonny Garrish on that. Good picker and a great guy. He can be heard on a lot of records these days. Larry Sasser |
