Bobby Koefer (for a short while), Bob White (1/52-6/53), Shorty Messer (twin steels with Bob White in 1952), Jean Crownover (1957-1964, great player, very melodic style of playing). Is that all of 'em?

Vance Terry played for Billy Jack Wills, not Bob to the best of my knowledge. Bobby Garrett played for Bob Wills in 1968 when Gene Crownover was ill. By the way,Billy Bowman played and recorded with Bob Herb Remington's "Boot Heel Drag". Herb did not record it with Bob.

Two more that I can add. Les(Carrot Top) Anderson, and one of the original Texas Playboys,Kermit Wahlen (who played an acoustic steel guitar).

Hi Dr.Yakes, I think that Vance Terry did play with Bob in the mid fifties. I don't think he ever recorded with Bob though. According to the bio on Brad's Page of Steel, Vance left Bob's band in 1955 to go to college. I think Bob probably had a bunch more steel players that never recorded with him

Vance Terry is on several Bob Wills Decca recordings in my collection. A 45 single "Doin' The Boston Fancy" and on the Dance O Rama LP album(DL 5562) which features 5 instrumentals recorded around 1955, after Bob had taken over Billy Jack Wills band.

Did Tommy Morrell ever play in one of the later incarnations of the band?

Funny anecdote about Noel Boggs working with Bob Wills. I had the pleasure of working a series of local #47 trust fund jobs with Noel Boggs back in the late sixties and early seventies, and he told me an unusual story concerning his employment with Bob Wills: He said when Bob hired him Bob had instructed him to "do something different that had never been done before" on the steel guitar when Mr. Wills pointed that bow at him. Noel said he agreed to that. The first night when Bob Wills pointed the bow at him, he froze; he remembered, however, that he was told to do something "different that had never been done", and becuase he played steel standing up, he took two steps backwards and physically kicked his steel guitar off of the stage on to the dance floor! Since then that story has been attributed to others, but I believe it was Noel for two reasons: 1) he played steel standing up, and 2) he told me that story himself. Best, Boomer

Les "Carrot Top" Anderson during WWII.Bobby Koefer. Terry Bethel did a session with Bob also. Vance played with Bob Wills after Bob took over Billy Jack's band in 1954, or maybe 1953. In the Band with him were Billy Jack, Tiny Moore, Skeeter Elkins,Kenny Lowry, Jack Loyd, Cotton Roberts, and Darla Daret. They recorded 18 sides in Los Angeles in January of 1955 for Decca. After the session, Vance left the band to go to Chico State-- he had just turned 21 that month. I listen to that stuff he recorded with Billy Jack, and man is it ever humbling. He was better at 17 and 18 than most of us will ever be. Vance also sat in on a Bob Wills recording session in March of 1953. He and Billy Jack had gone down to L.A. together and Bob asked him to set up his steel alongside Billy Bowman. If you listen close to the outro of "Bottle Baby Boogie" you can hear Bowman sustain a chord while Tiny Moore and Vance play twins. I thought for years that the only picture of Vance playing with Bob was the one in Dr. Townsend's book, but Vance's first wife dug up several more for me. I heard Tom Morrell say to Vance, "You are my hero!" That pretty much says it.
