![]() ![]() Hi Guys and Dolls, A few days ago I read a post about the interest of Julian Tharpe being inducted into the SGHOF. I hope that those who are interested will continue to post and also submit their lettters of nomination to Scotty at Scotty's Music. The address is the following: Mr. DeWitt "Scotty" Scott You need to include in your letter the reasons that you are nominating Julian, and why you believe he should be inducted into the SGHOF. These might include his steel guitar innovative tunings, his pedal setups, teaching steel, composer of songs, orginal stylist, list of big entertainers he performed and recorded with, etc., etc. His innovative styling and playing alone should get him inducted into the SGHOF, but they like to hear anything else that would help too. I believe the day is drawing closer for his induction and Reece Anderson's. They both truly deserve this honor. Please help us by writing the letters of nomination. God Bless You All! Terry Wood |

![]() ![]() I believe that I have a few of Julian Tharpe's old LP's. He had a great tuning, sort of E6- E13, but all his own. He was one of the great original players of all time. I think I had his old Blue Sho-Bud 14 string for awhile. The guy I bought it from, took a lot of pulls off, knee levers etc, and I couldn't get parts back then, and couldn't get it set up the way I wanted, so I let it go as a 14 string E9. Imagine that! He certaintly belongs in the HOF, as does Reece and Chuck Wright. Chuck's Sierra had 20 pedals that were staggered, I saw him and his guitar in 1968, Vance Terry, a great jazz steel player, was playing it. He used to heel and toe the pedals. Lets hope they all make the HOF, they earned it!....al |

![]() ![]() Terry, I was watching television, and they had this show about mule pulling in Columbia, Tennessee. There was a guy on the show who looked just like Julian Thorpe. He was a dead ringer. He was selling mules. Looked exactly like Julian, and even talked and acted like him. I will never forget the day at the convention when Julian, you, and I were talking, and Julian drank the water glass full of whiskey! There were lots of BIG DOGS on the show, but Julian was the coolest. When he played ,it was as good as it gets. That was the last time Julian was at the International Steel Guitar. ![]() ![]() I met Julian in 1971 when I was 11 years old.He was very encouraging and helpful to me .Although we rarely made contact the last years of his life ,we had a great friendship.I will always be grateful to Julian for sharing his genius and warmth. And yes,He should be in the Hall of Fame. T.W. |

![]() ![]() Certainly if anyone deserves to be in the Hall of Fame Julian does, however the powers that be don't always look to please our desires..Certainly Julian and Reece should aready be side by side on the wall..Now if only old grudges could be put aside by small minds before most of us are gone to pass on the memories of their great acomplishments..However by the looks of the response on this thread there are many of us who have our own HOF. ------------------ |

![]() ![]() Terry Woods, Just a bit of info on Julians gtrs,...When he was living in the area of Trussville ,Ala., I used to visit with him often...He was playing Beau Monday's club in downtown B'ham, and I would set in with them each time I was there, and what a thrill to share the stage with him... He had a black 14 BMI,that went through a club fire, that also burned most of the covers from his amp and two speaker cabinets...Zane quickly built him a green 14,that had a plate on the front that read "Specially Built For Julian Tharpe" Julian ripped the rest of the covers off the amp and cabinets, sprayed them with black paint and was using them with the green 14.... I was there when he got his black one back from Zane...he played it that night... He tried to get me to buy the green one,and said he would give me lessons every time I would come down... I went back home, got enough money together, and called him later and told him I wanted the guitar...he said a druggist from the area had bought it a couple of days before...but he would get me another like it...I said it wouldn't be the same,as it was not his personal guitar...and would not be engraved to him...He said he would play it at the club when I was there setting in...and as for the engraved plate.. he said "ROB my friend,I'll have it engraved with any damn thing you want on it'...I wish ed many times later I had accepted his offer,, He was my buddy and friend, and like so many others,I hope he will be placed in the SGHOF soon...we miss him... RP...'come on in'... |

![]() ![]() Tharp was one of the first I heard outside of the "big three (emmons, green, chalker). A friend, who was deep into jazz, heard me play steel, talked bout it with me, and said that the instrument's potential hasn't been touched (I know that!). He told me what he envisioned could be done. I listened and nodded. Then I said, listen to this-- and I put on THarpe. All he said was, "Oh. I guess it HAS been done! That's exactly what I was thinking of! My My! That other Julian was good! A freiend once asked him "how do you do that?" And Julian simply said, "like This," and wiggled his thumb and index finger at each other. He was truly amazing. Happliy a small piece exists on his records. Winnie (Julian) |

![]() ![]() Glad to see the new postings on Julian. I agree with you Slick, Julian should be in the SGHOF as well as Maurice "Reece" Anderson, and like you, I say that not just because they were my friends. Julian truly was so unique in his steel playing. There may be those who will disagree but I rank Julian and Reece in the top ten steel players of all time. And they didn't either one pay me nor tell me to say that. God bless you all according to HIS WORD! Terry J. Wood |

![]() ![]() It really is great to hear all of the praise for Julian Tharpe and I agree that he belongs in the Hall Of Fame. Frank Rogers posted about some things that we did in 1976. I met Julian in Nashville in 1975. We became friends and he introduced me to Jimmy Bryant and Johnny Gore, a great sax player. I couldn't believe that I had never heard of this great steel guitar player. When I went back up home to Michigan, I got ahold of Frank and his dad and told them of my intentions to have a jamfest seminar. Jimmy Bryant and Julian for a whole six hours at the Ramada Inn in Muskegon. Frank will remember the great time we had. I believe that I promoted a total of three jamfests in Muskegon in 1976 with Julian and Jimmy and JOhnny. Frank Rogers and his dad recorded a session that we did live at the Horseshoe Lounge in Muskegon. ON this session, or jamfest, we featured Buddy Emmons, Julian Tharpe, Doug Jernigan, Maurice Anderson, Jimmy Bryant, Johnny Gore with George Hyles on drums and Ernie Sykes on bass. What a great show for six hours. Frank will recall that the mastering company in Nashville lost the tapes after mastering. Where they are, nobody knows. I do have some unmixed tapes of that session, though. Julian was the steel guitar player that instilled in me the desire to promote steel guitar in the seventies. You know, Julian was not only a great steel guitarist, he was a great person. We traveled the road through several states when I was promoting the jamfest/seminars and I will have to say, those memories are probably the most cherished that I have. Early in the morning, traveling all night, stopping to have breakfast and getting so tickled over some of Julians jokes. He got Jimmy Bryant, Johnny Gore and myself so tickled one morning in Battle Creek, Mich that we got the giggles and couldn't stop. We couldn't get Julian to shut up so all three of us had to leave the restaurant. That is all of us except Julian who sat at the table and finished off our breakfasts. When we did the live Cavalcade OF Guitars in Dallas in 1976, Julian lit up the faces of the jazz guitar players like no other musician could. I have the tapes of Julian and the great bassist, Slam Stewart, doing a duet of Danny Boy. The audience went wild. Howard Roberts, Tal Farlow and Herb Ellis all told me that they would like to do an album with Julian if I could arrange it. Because of a difficulty with getting a release from LEs Paul for the album that we did in Dallas, I was never able to carry through with my plans for a jazz album with, we finally decided, Tal Farlow and Julian Tharpe. There are a lot of untold stories here that maybe we can tell someday. I have not been around steel guitar much since those days that Les Paul threw water on my dreams, but I have heard enough steel guitar and known enough of the players that it seems odd to me that Julian has not already been inducted into the Steel Guitar Hall Of Fame. I sure would like to visit Julian where he is resting if someone could tell me just where it is at. Thanx Dave |

![]() ![]() I replied to this last night, but, apparently my lack of computer knowledge sent my reply off into cyber space or whatever they call it. Reading Frank Rogers reply, I remember how excited Frank was to appear on stage with these steel guitar greats. I produced these 'jamfest/seminars' and was really fortunate to have Frank and his father to help. I have been away from the steel guitar community for several years and was not even aware that Julian was not in the SGHOF. If anyone deserves that honor today, it has to be Julian Tharpe. I met Julian, as Frank did, in 1975 at the Dee-Mens Den on the corner of 4th and Broadway in Nashville, Tenn. I was overwhelmed by his steel guitar playing. Julian was not only one of the greats of steel guitar, he was also a great person. One great memory is an early morning breakfast after a jamfest. Julian, JImmy Bryant, Johnny Gore and myself were sitting in this restaurant near Kalamazoo, MIchigan. In 1976 I put together a recording session that was held at Dewey's Longhorn Ballroom in Dallas, Texas. It was a six hour thing featuring 13 musicians doing individual performances and the main feature was having all of these musicians on the stage two seperate times to record a session for United Artists. Some of the pickers: Tal Farlow, Howard Roberts, Herb Ellis, Les Paul, Bucky PIzzarelli, Slam Stewart, Louis Bellson, Buddy Emmons, Doug Jernigan, Maurice Anderson, Curly Chalker, Johnny Gore and Julian. The highlight for me was during Julians portion of the individual sessions. The great Slam Stewart picked up his doghouse bass and proceeded to accompany Julian and BLondie on Danny BOy. My intentions after this recording were to record each one of the steel guitar players in a studio with one of the jazz guitar players. When I approached the guitar players about this, they were all for it. The one problem that I found I would have was that Howard Roberts, Tal Farlow and Herb Ellis all wanted to record with Julian. These great jazz guitarists were just blown away by Julian. They also were blown away by the other steel players at that session. Tal Farlow couldn't keep his head out from underneath Curly's steel and complained that he was at a disadvantage because of all of the pedals that Curly had. It was in jest, though. Because of the fact that Les Paul would not sign a rearranged release, United Artist never did release the album. I do have copies of it and I do plan on releasing it some day. If anyone is not familiar with Julians qualifications to be a SGHOF member, just have them ask any of the other great steel guitar players in the world. Thanx |

![]() ![]() Thanks for all the postings on Julian. As anyone can tell by reading this lengthy thread, he was a top-flight player, one of the greatest, and a great person too! As I mentioned months ago, he was my frend, hero and mentor. I do miss him ad is playing so! Dave, you mentioned visiting Julian's gravesite. He rests today in the family cemetary at Skipperville, AL. It is our plans to visit him and his family soon. I do hope that the newer steel players will have a chance to hear the recordings that were done of Julian's great playing. Scotty produced a bunch of Julian's records and probably has the masters. Julian had the following recordings on the Mid-Land Label these were released on albums and cassettes: " Take Your Pick," with the late Moses "Blondie" Caldron of the Ray Price Band. " The Jet Age," with horns and Bobby Caldwell on Guitar. " Southern Fried Steel," recorded in Alabama with Jimmy Day on Bass Guitar. " Deep Feelings," cut in St. Louis with Bobby Caldwell and other fine musicians. There are a few live recordings scattered about too. I recorded one in Talahasee FL during May, 1980. Julian's music is great, but the crowd is rowdy and noisy, a typical bunch of drunks. Julian blew them all away! Julian Tharpe was one of the greatest musicians I ever knew. He, Maurice Anderson and the late Zane Beck were my friends and heroes. I believe that Reece and Julian will soon be included in the SGHOF. T.J. Wood |

![]() ![]() Sometime between 1984-1987, while I was living in New Orleans, a friend of mine, Thad Anderson, asked me if I wanted to go see some good steel playing. We drove to Gulfport, MS to attend the opening of a new music store. Julian was there and played into the night. I was very impressed. Shortly after that I subscribed to the newsletter Scotty used to put out. In one issue there was a form to fill out and send in where you could nominate a steeler for the Hall Of Fame. I nominated Julian Tharpe. Maybe this will be the year! Mel |

![]() ![]() Could this be the year 2001, that Julian Tharpe, Maurice "Reece" Anderson be inducted into the Steel Guitar Players Hall of Fame? I hope that each of you will take the time to write Scotty and or others on the coveted SGHOF Boad and request that Reece and Julian be inducted. Previous posting on thios topic discusses at length what and where to forward your letter on their behalf. We all know in the Steel Community that these two giants of the Pedal Steel Guitar belong in the SGHOF. Thanks for carrying and supporting Julian and Reece! GOD bless you according to HIS WORD! ![]() ![]() Hi Mel, nice to see you here. That was my store in Gulfport. We really had a great time. Heard that Thad moved to Denver. Still in touch with him? If so, please give him my address. Julian really amazed everyone that day, as he does every time he sat down to play. He is really missed and I sincerely hope the HOF people install him soon. |

Also, now is the time for all of you who would like to see Julian and Reece be inducted into the SGHOF to start submitting letters to Scotty and members of the SGHOF Board. ![]() ![]() I had Julian play a part of my show in St. Louis in 1986 at the Steel Guitar Show. That was the year I was married and my wife Kathie's first exposure to the players. That weekend we spent with Julian talking, playing a little, watching Julian draw em in in typical Julian style and his antics...speaks for itself and the "real" person he was. Julian loved the instrument, loved the people, and if you knew him...well, you knew him. It was only recently that I learned of his passing...a truly sad day and a statement of how fast the time can go. JB |
