I'm not sure of the order;
1.) Bruce Bounton
2.) Paul Franklin
3.) Weldon Myrick
4.) Sonny Garish
5.) Lloyd Maines
6.) Danny Dugmore
7.) Jerry Garcia
8.) Jeff "Skunk" Baxter
9.) Al Perkins
10.)David Lindley
Plus one honorable mention to:
Steve Fishell and Jeff Peterson
These guys have all been very influential in forming my style. The "non-pedal" guy perhaps the most.
( But people say that I sound like Jerry Garcia, so maybe he should be on the list too.)
I know it's a very different list, so am I.
As for the top ten best players, that's another list,
I'll leave that to the final tally. (Good thread!)

I agree with all of the above but they are all #1 in my book "cause they all have their own distinctive style and hopefully the numbers beside the names is just that and not who is the #1 player and who is the 10th best because that ain't gonna work.
IMHO.

Sorry you had to take #11 Jerry...You could be in the top 10 if you would try to play psg instead of the B@njo and Mandolin. You have the talent but you is toooooo (2) versatile. Now, how much money did you need to tide you over?

All due respect to Mr. Hughey, there's just something about Lloyd Green's playing...

After those two, it doesn't matter that much to me. The rest are great but Lloyd? Audio ambrosia!!!

My personal list always has, and probably always will have, Buddy Emmons as #1 and Doug Jernigan as a very close #2. Beyond that, I'd have a hard time choosing from most of the other names already mentioned above for the other 8 slots. Maybe I could come up with a top 100, but even then I'd never figure out what the order should be.

well at least there seems to be some concensus in the listings so far

Here's my prediction of C Dixon's top 10:

1. Emmons
2. Emmons
3. Emmons
4. Emmons
5. Emmons
6. Emmons
7. Emmons
8. Emmons
9. Emmons
10. Emmons

and I would have to agree: almost anywhere a steeler wants to go, from C&W to Swing to Rock to Jazz, Buddy was there first and did it so well that he set the standard.

(God bless you Carl; you too Buddy)

Dave,

You aren't going to believe this. But as I live and breathe it is true.

Last night before I went to bed, I read this thread. Decided not to post.

As I laid in bed, I kept thinking about what I would say. And what I would have said is EXACTLY what you thought I would have said.

So I decided not to say it for fear of getting doused so heavy with flames that even the walls of "Ft Knox" could not have kept me from being burned!

So I am not going to say it!!

Thanks pal.

God bless you, Buddy and all the rest.

I would have to go with the stylists, innovaters, pioneers, and those that dared to be different, etc., that everybody else has been chasing for the last 30+ years.
1. Alvino Rey
2. Jerry Byrd
3. Herb Remington
4. Jouquin Murphey
5. Noel Boggs
6. Speedy West
7. Curly Chalker
8. Buddy Emmons
9. Jimmy Day
10.Don Buzard
11. Ray Noren
12. Maurice Anderson
13. Bobby Koeffer
14. Tom Morrell
15. Zane Beck
16. Julian Tharpe
17. Ralph Mooney
18. Bud Issacs
19. Lloyd Green
20. Hal Rugg

Not neccessarily in that order, but just about everything I have heard in the past 30 years or so, I heard one or more of these guys play it before.
Now throw in Weldon Myrick, Bobby Garrett, Buddy Charlton, Bob White, Pee Wee Whitewing, Doug Jernigan, Sneaky Pete, Jay Dee Maness, Little Roy, Billy Robinson, Don Helms, Vance Terry, and please tell me what has been played in the past 3 decades that was not derived from them.
Oops! I guess the topic was your personal top ten favorites. O.K., all thirty of em. Sorry!

2. Buddy Charleton

The rest in no particular order: Weldon Myrick, Hal Rugg, Paul Franklin Jr., Bruce Bouton, Little Roy Wiggins, Herby Wallace and Bobbe Seymour.

I could go on and on, and my apologies to anyone I missed.

Since we are including Jerry Byrd in the PSG group, I will have to say that he is the #1 of all my preferences...Big E takes #2, (sorry Buddy,no offense intended). The rest of my list still stands but not in the order listed. I still have a lot of preferences that fit the 10 group...Paul Franlin, Tommy White, Herby Wallace, Walter Haynes and the list goes on and on and on and on......

Normally I would never ever do this. But I just gotta say this.

There are many, many great steel guitar players out there. There are some fantastic players. There are a limited few incredible players. And there is danged few really "best ever been" players .

But, there is ONLY one that is so far ahead of ALL the rest as to not even be close. There simply is NO contest wnen considering him. I venture to say that ALL the above players would agree totally, if really truthful.

How ANY one could ever leave him off a list defies all logic to me.

But with MAN's logic as apposed to HISlogic, I suppose the impossible could be possible

Emmons, Chalker, Myrick, Rugg, Brumley, Drake, Mooney, Day, Jernigan, and Green.

These are the guys that "made it happen" (at least for me) 35 years ago. A lot of younger players are hot now, but these are the guys that made me want to do it!

Also digging: Dan Dugmore, Robby Turner

Ooops==almost forgot Tom Morrell.

And a tip of the hat to Mr. Emmons, too.
