Being from San Antonio, TX this is a tough question, as we have way too many players that are well known. People (in the area) like Dicky Overby, Rick Price, Denny Mathis, Randy Reinhard, Tommy Detamore etc.

We also have some great players that a lot of people have never heard of. In no particular order…

Kenny Grohman, Jerry Blanton, Don Pack, Roger Edgeinton, Carson Wells, Glenn Harden, Gary Maddox, Butch Cornwell, and probably a few I left off! Like Bobby Flores…yea, yea so you heard of him. You are thinking of his fiddle playing! He is also a fine steel player.

If you really want to be a “star” on the Steel Guitar, San Antonio is probably NOT the place you want to be. The competition gets real tough down here. On the other hand, if you want to “hear” some great Steel Guitar…come on down!

I really dig these cats;
Jim Baron
Earnest Bovine
Gary (Ramon) Brandin
Frank Carter
Mike Fried
Bobby Lee
John McClung
Jim Palenscar
Mike Perlowin
Kevin Ryan
Rick Schmidt
Al Vescovo
G.D. Walker
David Wright

Alright, so some of these pickers are pretty well known, but that's OK.

Why should you guys have all the fun?

A couple of great non-pedal steelers worthy of wider recognition:

- Margie Mays (smooth as silk. She studied
with Belkva Dickerson who studied with Sol
Ho'oppii)
- John Ely (a much lower profile these days
in Hawaii than when he was with Asleep at
the Wheel but he's great)
- Duke Ching (based in LA, Duke plays it
sweet & traditional on his records but
swings like crazy on a 4-neck Fender in
person)
- Ralph Kolsiana (he's in his late 80's now
and no longer plays but Ralph was one of
the first electric steelers ever. He owns
Rickenbacker frypan #4! He was a great,
swinging Hawaiian style player who was
very influenced by Dizzy & Miles)
- Phil Leadbetter (a great Mike Auldridge-
influenced Dobro player; superb touch and
tone. Check out his CD "Philibuster".

I'd like to submit myself as one of the bottom 10 unknowns. (And this is as it should be.)

For all these players' names getting dropped here, where in the Wide World Of Sports can a person find their music? mp3.com? Personal websites? I'd like to hear some of them.

a great player from ct. was a fellow by the name of Larry Laymen, at the time he played a sho bud d10 with the white fretboards, he blocked with the right when everybody picked up the bar to mute, sadly he passed away about 8 or so years ago in texas, I saw him and Ray Gantek playing together at an informal day gig in hartford ct. it was a real treat, from ct it was Larry, Ray and Jim Smith

Jim .Sure am sorry to hear larry passed on.Excellent player as is Ray Gantek who filled in with me a couple of nights and I could never say enough about Jim Smith. Working with him was one of the best bands and good times I have had with this Music.Jim and Doc Peters together sure made it easy for me to get a lot of the best Gigs. I heard Doc will sit in with Herby Wallace in Knoxville next weekend.

Sorry about being a few days late, but just wanted to mention that here in the Pacific Northwest--the land of volcanoes and injuns we have some fine steel pickers. Already mentioned are Jimmy Webb, Don Pawlak and Pat Roe who take a back seat to nobody, but also there is Speedy Price--a true C6th type picker that can really do the job. Also Larry Behm from the Portland Ore. area and a couple of others down there
And then there is good old Butch Cornwell, who has picked at Scotty's convention and picks harmonics almost better than Buddy Emmons himself. One other I would like to mention is Katz. I do not remember his last name. He went on the road with Marty Robbins sometime in the seventies. At our Northwest Steel Guitar Society meeting sometime in the early seventies he absolutely stopped the whole meeting when he ripped off a few licks. That kid could really rip it up.
Seems to me that there are one hell of a lot more good pickers than most of us realize.
Don't give up fellas. I just heard from a fifty year old guy that wants to play Jimmy Hendrix type stuff on the pedal steel. More power to him.

I've seen a lot of names posted here and I'm sure they are all great, but somebody neglected to put Mr Smooth on the list, Bill Stafford is my Choice for Great, Relatively unknown players. Bill has never worked for a major act or worked any sessions with any as far as I know. He has managed to get a lot of attention thru his appearances at the shows and has worked his butt off to promote the PSG. His superb picking speaks well for his efforts. In these days where it is essential for a picker to have worked for a name artist to get recognition, Bill has done it as being strictly an instrumentalist.
This speaks very well for his talent and ability.

Wally,

I think the Katz you're thinking of is Katz Kobiashi (sp). He played with the last Marty Robbins' band. A fabulous picker! Marty used to make wise cracks about Katz being Japanese for example "Would ya look at him? He don't look like us!"

Sleep John, I agree whole heartedly about Bill Stafford being one of the greats. I think anyone would be remiss in not including him with the upper echelon of steel guitardom. That's why I didn't include Bill in my post. But maybe you're right tho, Bill isn't as well known as he SHOULD be.

Keep on pickin'!
Glenn

For anyone in the UK yes, go and see Dave Hartley if you can. I was on a gig with him a week ago, and went to see him play in his country duo "Steel n' Lace" last night. He's now playing a twenty-year old Sho Bud LG fitted with an 'Emmons' type George L's pickup, through a Profex straight into the PA. The sound is BEAUTIFUL, and what a great player. They share vocals, and acoustic guitar, steel and sometimes banjo are live, backing tracks are Dave's own.
The club was tiny, and they were NOT appreciated. But the entrance fee of 50 pence was the best money I've spent in a long time!

Rudy Gabriletto,Clydd Bloodsworth,Ray Chilton,Don West, Jim Whited,Doug Bomire,Pete Adams,Joe Turner,Bobby Boggs,Mike Bagwell,Smiley!!!!, Mike Sweeny, Brian Adams,Eddie Trent,Jerry Fleming, And a guy that I met in Ogdon,Utah but time wo'nt let me remember his name. There are others but the same goes with the bad memory..Pancake Norris who I believe has moved on to that bigger banstand. Thank you all!!

Great post! But we will never run out of names for this thread.

I didn't count all the names mentioned here, but easy more than 200.

I would say there is more like 1000 top players who are "Nationally Unknown" or who have not received "National Recognition"..al

Two great pickers in the central Texas area that aren't as well-known as they should be (IMHO) are Glenn Suchan (with the Kevin Fowler Band) and Glenn Shankle (with the Cory Morrow Band).

I'd also like to mention another veteran steel man who is well-known, but so humble and lacking in ego that his name doesn't come up as much as most others: Mike Daily, of George Strait's "Ace In The Hole Band".

BTW, all of the above are way fine fellers too...well, Suchan gets a little rowdy at times, but a man who plays a 26-string Sierra is entitled to vent a little steam LOL!

There are a couple from West "by God" Virginia Id like to mention, of course Im prejudiced to both of them and one of them is no longer with us:
Gary Boggs....smoothest steel player I ever heard, soulful.
Allen "Hook" Moore....Fast, and soulful
also have to agree on Sid Hudson from Va. not only a killer steel player but as equally good on Guitar, first time I heard him was with the Don Kelly band at the stagecoach in Nashville last I heard he was playing the carolina opry or sonething like that. Also I dont want to leave out another great all around picker, he smokes on steel, banjo, fiddle, lead guitar, piano, and anything else with strings, from Ashland,KY (not actually but close enough) brother Tim Sergent......
also another great steeler from KY, who moved to nashville and last I heard was with the shotgun red band on the General Jackson, Jerry Taylor.....

Yeah Dave, it's funny to see this one bubble back up to the top.

It gave me a chance to review the list and find another omission. The very first guy to ever let me sit at a steel and try to pick it was Tommy Hannum. He's definitely not a run-of-the-mill picker. He gets a high score in my book not only for being a first-rate picker, but also as an innovator. Like Al Perkins and Joe Wright, he understands how to play steel as a rock 'n roll instrument. As far as I know, he's still with Ricky Van Shelton. Tommy's a great guy as well.

Jeremy Wakefield is a monster young player who's first call for Wayne Hancock, Deke Dickerson, The Lucky Stars, and The Smith Ranch Boys among others. Rick mentioned Al Perkins in passing and I'd like to add that he was good in the Flying Burrito Days, but he's a wonderful player now, with great tone and very musical ideas. Lynn Frazier in Texas via New York, was a terrific player when I saw him 15 years ago. This guy's not an unknown, but doesn't get his due: Jimmy Murphy who played with Paycheck, Carl Smith, etc.
Some other excellent local (S.F.) talent from the past: Pete Grant and Chris Ivey in Sacramento. Jimmie Foxx from Sacto who sold me my first Emmons that Dave Robbins (another excellent picker) now owns. Greg Lasser, Glenn Andrews, Carlos Claveria (Carco now with AATW) and Barry Blackwood.
Some good current local players are Dave Ristrim, Lee Jeffries (from Big Sandy's band), and David Phillips.

Well, I guess a couple of my favorite "local" pickers are (in no particular order:

Gary Lee Gimble - Gaithersburg, MD
Ernie Pollock - Cumberland, MD

If you were to add local pickers that are NATIONALLY known, then of course, Buddy Charleton would be included!! :-D

Yeah.. Tommy Hannum! funny, I had the opposite experience with Tommy- I had been playing about - oh a year, when Tommy called me up to try and find out how to tune his Emmons he had just bought- I was the first and closest "steel player" he met so I guess I got him started (wink wink) then of course he had some lessons with Buddy Charleton...

Tommy is a mighty fine player!

So is Pete Finney!

Over twenty years ago I had the distinct honor and privilege to audition for Celestrial recording artist, Oscar Shields. Joe's office, located in Falls Church, Va., and a very plush establishment, I set up next to Tommy Hannum so he could critique my playing and offer a thumbs up or down to fill his shoes as a Shilo Playboy. For those of you who might recall Oscar, he had a file box on stage filled with hundreds of 3 by 5 index cards with lyrics printed on them. He would probably sift through 50 cards per song, while singing, with half of them falling on the floor. Anyway, he had a steel player occasionally fill in who is my nomination for the Unknown category, Jeff Wise.

The top ten unknowns should include Billy Cooper of Orange, VA. Billy played professionally with Bobby Helms and others, and is a fantastic player. He and his wife Wanda, run a steel guitar shop in Orange, VA, where he instructs on our chosen instrument.
