Buddy, I was listening to the steel guitar jazz album the other day and was once again blown away. My question is, what guitar were you playing, I think it was a Sho-Bud, but was it D9 or D10. Also what amp did you use. I love the sound of it as well as the Black album even though the two sounds are totaly different. Every time I hear you play or see you post I am still amazed at your incredable talent and knowledge. I just wish I had been around in the 50s and 60s to watch how the steel guitar was re-invented.

Johnny,
In reading your post,I could not help but think of how I have enjoyed Big E's Black album over the years and I'm still inspired by his performance on that particular recording today. That recording should be required listening for any pedal steel hobby person, be they professional or beginner,as it is timeless and presented with the class the instrument deserves.By the way, you are also one of my few favorites, and I mean people and player.

Hey Tommy, I would have thought we would at least get honorable mention. Of coarse I'm joking.

You know, Buddy told me once that he couldn't even stand to listen to the Black album anymore; in his opinion, the playing is terribly out of tune.

Sounds in tune to me. But then again I still tune the beats out, and couldn't tune the entire guitar with a tuner if my life depended on it.

I heard a story (in person) from a guitar player (who will remain nameless) who told me he was playing with Buddy with Ray PRice at the time he made the Steel GUitar Jazz album. He told me he traded amps with Buddy, trading him his amp (standell??) with an almost blown 12" speaker for Buddy's amp with a 15". I don't know if this is true, or if he was just telling this to impress me as to what an a(*&^%$ he is.

Buddy, is this true?

Hey Tommy and Johnny, not to worry. For what it's worth, you're definitely number 1's in my book. And Tommy, you're name on the Jagwire String packages isn't there due to others not wanting to be. On the contrary, you were our #1 choice, and we are indeed... extremely proud to have you with us, and hope you will be for a very long time.
My best regards to both you and Johnny Cox.

Johnny,
Thanks for the nice words. I used a double ten Sho~Bud and a Standel amp with a twelve inch speaker on the Jazz album. On the Black album, I used a rosewood push-pull Emmons and a Fender Twin.

It was murder putting that list together because of the many fine players I know, but my names are the guys that have made a difference in my music, so naturally I had to lean toward the geezers. And yes, I'm a geezer too. Let's call the first ten players my roots, with the rest branching out in different directions. That places me somewhere close to Tommy and Johnny on one of those branches.

Dan,
I thought the Standel with the twelve inch speaker was mine, but maybe I did borrow it. Ray Price had told me he would be in New York at the time I was doing my sessions and to travel light so he could fly my gear back with us on his private plane; so I took the small Standel. Mercury had paid for the plane ticket to New York and back, so it wasn't a financial move. All I can say is that it would have been a different album if Murphy hadn't happened by.

Mr. Emmons,

One of the greatest musical pleasures and memories of my life was hearing Bluemmons for the first time. My friend and I in Calgary felt we had uncovered another world, and I guess we surely did. Thanks for the all of your great music.

Count me in as huge fan of the black album(as well as all of Buddy's work). The sound of the whole record is perfect. My question to you Buddy if you see this is- What kind of reverb did you use-amp verb, studio plate?.Also were you using the Echoplex at this time for you're "standard" sound?

Thanks for sharing all of your knowledge with all of us. We're fortunate indeed to have your experience available at the drop of an email.

Marty,
I was using the Twin amp reverb but sparingly, in combination with studio reverb. The difference in the two can be heard during and after the bridge in Danny Boy, where Weldon Myrick added studio reverb on the final mix. I was using the Echoplex on slow songs at the time, but I don't recall using it on the album for anything other than "Witches Brew." I'd have to listen to it to be sure.

Thanks, Buddy, that response is going on my refridgerator door!

I'm also a huge fan of those two albums, they are still at the very top of the best steel albums of all time.

I appreciate that Johnny. I just meant that we were all on some sort of branch stemming from the roots of the players I posted. Another way to put it is, anyone who has drawn from me has drawn from them.

E,
I believe you to be the trunk and we the twigs.I also believe the Black album to be a definitive benchmark for modern day pedal steel and is my all time favorite steel guitar recording, but you already knew that.

I was a part of the scene when Buddy and Hank Garland jammed in the back room at Moms Place, Now Tootsies Orchid Lounge around 58-59 and this team was a phenomenon to behold. After I heard & seen these two play I still did'nt believe it. Buddy, I just want you to know I feel so privileged to have been able to witness those times, and would'nt take anything for the times we had. JC

Mr. Emmons,

I wrote earlier that one of my greatest Bluemmons from your magnificent Steel Guitar Jazz record. On the CD it lists the tune as thrills was hearing for the first time Bluemoons. Was I mistaken all these years? The record has been in storage in Canada for more than a decade so I cannot check myself. Thanks again for your great music.

Let's see, Buddy Emmons is the trunk.
Tommy White and Johnny cox are twigs.
Dave Robbins is a leaf.

Hell, I guess I'm just a nut that fell OFF the tree!
