Could MSAs be next?

Seriously, I remember when pawn shops had 50s and 60s Telecasters piled like fish at an outdoor market. No one was interested. After all, they are mass-produced instruments.Prices are now over 10K!

I sold two of them back around 1970. I made a profit selling one for $150 and the other for $135. And they did not have Leo Fender's signiture on them.

My MSA Classic has Bud Carter's sig on the label!

I agree completely with Herb Steiner. Well said, Herb! This seller listed a price that he felt was obtainable for his instrument and in fact, was able to get that price. The psychology behind all this anger expressed by forumites is fascinating to me.

This form of communication (posts on a bulletin board) leaves much to be desired. It is often difficult to discern key aspects of everyday communication that we take for granted in face-to-face encounters: tone of voice, expression, etc. People tend to read-in intent or tone that may not be intended.

As far as market value for rare steel guitars go, this may be instructive. This morning I looked at a price list from 1988. Minneapolis Hawaiian steel collector, Dirk Vogel, was liquidating his collection of 20 Bakelite Rics - most pre-war, all in like-new condition. Prices were $2,500-5000 each. Now this was TEN YEARS AGO and I'd say that these prices are at least triple TODAY's market value for these instruments. Guess what? They all sold.

Something is worth what someone will pay.

In reading through this thread again, it occurs to me that perhaps the real issue isn't so much with the price tag of the guitar, but with the way the instrument was offered---like only if you're "special" enough (i.e. you've got a sh**load of money) will you get to even discuss or view this guitar. Let's just say for the sake of argument I had the cash to buy that Bigsby; I don't know anything about them, I've never seen one, but I'm a little intrigued by it's apparent rarity. I'd want to give the seller a call, look at a picture, find out some info. What was initally mild interest could turn into real obsession, and I'm sending the guy a cashier's check for the thing and jumping through my ass to get it.

I used to work at a guitar shop here in Houston. One day this guy walks in, milling around, strumming various guitars, just like 95% of the people who walk through the door. I figured he'd buy a pack of strings and leave. Then he saw the "vintage" Super 400 on the wall, and when it was all over, he'd laid out the gold card for a $25,000 guitar. Why? Because I got it down off of the wall for him. That's it. I put it in his hands. I didn't give him any snooty, haughty attitude, or make him show me the money before hand, or make him change into a soft flannel full body suit so as not to marr the finish. It's just a guitar!

I think steelcollector's put-up-or-shut-up attitude is the real issue here. His elitist disposition made his price tag the target of scorn. Like I said before, when you preface the body of your ad with SERIOUS INQUIRIES ONLY!!!!!!, you've set a negative tone of exclusion. Whether or not we think his Bigsby is worth 10 grand is irrelevant. It's worth it to somebody (obviously), and I'm sure that person is as happy as can be with their aquisition.

I think you folks are reading too much between the lines of the original post.

Herb, if he listed this Bigsby for sale a couple months ago and got a potential buyer, regardless of price, why did he feel it necessary to list it again knowing he had it practically sold.
Did I miss something? The only posts I see by steelcollector are dated February 5. The whole topic would have died a natural death if Al Gershen hadn't revived it on April 2.

b0b, You are absolutely right. The dates on the post indicate the I have jumped too quickly and possibly to hard on the wrong person(s). I owe the people on this post and most of all, Mr. Steelcollector and you an apology. Please accept my humble apology for being bent out of shape and contributing to the "hostility" toward Mr. Steelcollector. I guess I need to get me an updated pair of bi~focals. Herb, a special apology to you also.

As a serious and embarassed admirer of Bigsby Steel Guitars, and other fine vintage instruments, I don't see how a few pictures could have endangered or hurt the sale.
