I'll probably get shot for this, but... I think Tad Dameron is actually responsible for concieving the intro to "Nightlife". [This message was edited by John Steele on 26 November 2000 at 01:30 PM.] |

To paraphrase Will Rogers, I never heard many steel intro's through the years that I didn't like, and have been guilty of trying to reconstruct most of them on the bandstand....but the one outstanding "moment of inspiration" that I still remember as if it was yesterday, was the first time they put Nightlife on the jukebox at the club where I was working. I still remember the chills I got from hearing it. I was a western swing purist, still resisting pedals until I heard that song and it changed my style of playing forever after. And yes...Brumley can take credit for that "raw" country sound on the other neck with Together Again. The best IMO is Tom Brumley on Buckster's "Close Up The Honky Tonks". By the way, Buck is the only artist I can name that had nothing but steel on alot of his records; Buddy Emmons on Ray Price's "A Way To Survive", and of course, anything by Mooney or Charleton. |

Does anyone remeber a song, "Here I am, Alone Again"? I believe it was Webb Pearse but I have no idea who did the gang-buster steel work. ------------------ |

Y'all named most of them..What about a "quasai" kickoff (or answer) to Buck Ownes on "Together Again" with Tom Brummly?.All of us who ever learned to play HAD to copy that. Big request in the clubs. Tom had some nice stuff with Rick Nelson and the Stone Canyon Band too. Lloyd Green on the Beatles "Here Comes The Sun". But definatly Farewell Party, Look At Us, Night Life, and on and on.But those great intro's are the heart and soul of steel guitar. LET'S HAVE A BIG HAND FOR "ALL OF THE GREAT STEEL PICKER'S"! and Thanks for the memories and insperation! Bob Hayes |

It might not make the cut for an "all time greatest" list, but the Al Perkins intro on a song called "Dirt roads" by a group called Morning was the very very first thing I ever worked out 100% correctly, note for note, when I started playing PSG. JE:-)> |

The Johnny Bush cut of "Whiskey River" on RCA from 1973 has Weldon Myrick on it. Which release has Buddy? The Delta release from 1980? ( I thought that was Rick Price) Kevin |

I always thought it was Buddy, but you are probably right about it being Weldon. I have a greatest hits album and Buddy is all over in it with Chalker, so I just assumed it was Buddy. You know what assumed stands for. Anyway I still like it. ------------------ |

Yeah, Jason, BE on "Cold, Cold, Heart." Fer sure! I don't know 'bout the Ray Price vers. but I have a version with Willie Nelson on "Just One Love." It's scary--so good! Talk about tone, intonation, feel, whoa! How 'bout Doug Jernigan's kick on "It's Dark Outside" from the first "Hillybilly Jazz." Great swing kickoff. (He shines on that whole album.) For plain ol' soulful E9 country, try Lloyd Green on "Just Between You and Me" by Charlie Pride at Panther Hall. John R. |
