When I spoke with Speedy at the Dallas show this year, I inquired whether he had yet heard Biller & Wakefield's music. (For those who don't know, these two guys play real retro "Jimmy Bryant/Speedy West" style of guitar and nonpedal steel.) Speedy told me he hadn't heard of them. Knowing that he'd be at the very least "interested" to hear their music, I bought him a copy and sent it to him recently as a gift. Today I got the following letter from Speedy, which I reprint here with his permission, and which I think you may find of interest:

"Dear Jim:

It was so nice of you to send the CD of Dave Biller and Jeremy Wakefield. It made me feel real good to hear these guys sound so much like Jimmy and me. Not only that, it makes me feel very proud that they even want to sound like us. They probably weren't even born when we made those records many years ago. Every musician on their album is a star in his own right. I've played the CD three times already, and intend to enjoy it for a long, long time.

My very best wishes to you and the band.

Sincerely,

Speedy

Speedy's a real prince, it would be a buzz to hear someone doing what you did half a century ago!

Jim, When this album first came out I heard some feedback that it wasn't as good as Speedy & Jimmy. My response was "I'm glad someone is willing to do a record like this! And Heck, regardless it's a Darn fine record!
Jeremy Wakefield will prove to be the finest steel guitar player of his generation!
Need further proof? Check out Dave Stuckey's newest CD, "Get a load of this".
I'm glad Speedy is proud of these cats!!
By the way isn't Speedy on line any more?

They really captured that era... the CD even sounds as if it was recorded 40 years ago...
They add a nice Mills Brothers touch when singing...

and the cover art fits that period too.

This is really a great recording... and the songs really stand up on there own as original material.

Stuckey's disk will be on my top 10 list this year. I love his cover of Adolph Hofner's
"I'll Keep My Old Guitar"

Also check Jeremy's work on the last Wayne
Hancock album

The new "Lucky Stars" CD just came out and is a must for all you JW fans. This is his main band from the L.A. area.
