I'm bound stir up a few forum members with this one:

If i were someone like, say, Alan Jackson... i would pick out or write a good traditional country song, then i would go into a studio with some choice recordings that feature some of Pete Drake's classic licks, and i would sample them, create a catalog, and then select ones that would fit into the new recording. So the result is a new song with Pete Drake playing back-up.

The only problem would be the licensing. Along with a fee there could be a list of credits to point to which original recordings each part came from.

Yep, that's what i'd do.

The "ethics" are to pay tribute to a steeler who was an important part of the Country Music industry for many years. His sound should be heard again.

His sound lives and will continue to live on the classics (who can count how many!) he is on. I don't believe the record buying public could care less though. But in my opinion the way to do a modern tribute would be with a modern recording by a modern artist with, for example, Paul Franklin on steel, with the producer asking Paul to play think Pete. This sort of request must happen a lot and I just know that Paul would take this instruction and with artistry and tasteful interpretation would just nail it. Not an impersonation. An impression.

I don't think Paul would like to make a recording where he was "trying" to sound like someone else. Paul has his own sound, and you have to respect the fact that that's the sound he likes (or he wouldn't be playing it).

There are THOUSANDS of records with Pete on them. The best tribute to him would be to buy the records HE played on! Or, possibly, to use his licks yourself in some songs.

As long as we play his licks, buy his records, try to copy his sound, and remember Pete by talking about him...he will always be with us! There IS no finer tribute, IMHO!

Jon, this is just my opinion, Pete Drake was well respected and I knew him personally. I Know Paul Franklin, and I think that if Paul was asked to do this and being a fan of Pete's, he wouldn't hesitate and would be honored to do just that. As steel players, we know that Paul has his own style and is always creating new sounds and licks, etc. If the record producers ask Paul to do this, you can bet that you will hear what you are suggesting.

I like sampling. It's just another creative tool, with the potential for either good or evil. I chose to see the latter, and reacted poorly.
I apologise for the tenor of my earlier posting. I mean no disrespect to either Pete or yourself. It was kind of meant to be humorous, but I guess it lost something in the translation.

I think another way to pull off such a tribute would be a "Stars on 45" approach: lay down a relentless beat box shuffle groove, and then shoehorn snippets of Pete's classic riffs and turnarounds to fit the beat...
what do you think?
