Well I've started the steel guitar twice in my life, so I have two "firsts", both with great philosophical meaning.

1975 "Teach Your Children"
(just before my kids were born)
2000 "My Shoes Keep Walkin' Back to You"
(just after going back to the steel
after 25 years)

Anything I, IV, and V on strings 3,4,5 and 6 with A and B pedals, although I'm not sure you could call that learning a song...

I remember that day 22 years ago, when a very young Ricky Davis came to me at Picker's Paradise Music and said, "I have this here steel guitar, and I want to play just like you do."

I said, "son, that's going to take a few weeks!"

That reminds me of Dilbert :

"I'm tired of being a receptionist. Teach me how to be an engineer. I don't care if it takes all day."

"Bambi, you can't learn to be an engineer in one day. It takes years of study and hard work. Why don't you become an engineer's boss? That doesn't require any knowledge at all."

My first songs out of the Alkire Lesson Book were "Good Night Ladies" and "Little Brown Jug". The first song from sheet music was "Drifting and Dreaming". Of course, I was only fourteen when I started and I also learned some of Hank Williams' songs as he had just died. Some of the songs you have mentioned I haven't learned yet but I am a lot slower than most people . Joe

Thanks to Smiley for floggin' the ol' memory banks on that one - I do believe back in about 1964 or so it was Aloha Oe, then followed by In The Mood and Steel Guitar Rag plus what ever was in the Ernie Ball Steel Guitar books. All played on a Fender Deluxe 8. As for the PSG - still working on something that could be called a song.

Heres the way I have Approached My S12U 7X5 as a beginner steel player......
I havent concentrated on learning a song but have learned a lot of chords and their positions. Im not that great at single note playing but if you keep it a I , IV , V song and count it off I bet I'll find some stuff to put in there for ya..... maybe even throw in some II minors , III minors or VI minors chords and I still will hang
with ya.
If this isnt a good way to look at playing Steel then I welcome All and ANy input from others

I'm suprised I haven't seen more replies for Danny Boy (AKA Londonderry Aire in the Winnie Winston book). That was the first instumental I learned. Before that it was "Thats the way" and "Tangerine" off of Led Zepelin III.
