To anyone who knew him and can remember, we are setting up a memorial page for my dad on our website, he started our band about 17 years ago, but first he taught himself how to play the Steel Guitar in the early 60s around the Akron area, bought himself a steel guitar off of Shot and brought it home just to turn around and take it back and tell him it wasnt tuned to which Shot replied oh yeah thats the tuning its supposed to have. Anyway he got good enough to play for Doc Williams on the WWVA Jamboree out of Wheeling, where his playing caught the ear of Connie Smiths Bass player who offered him a Job, she moved us to Nashville and then he played with Nat Stuckey, The Homesteaders,(who backed up Jeannie C Riley for a while) Jim Ed Brown, George Jones, and Vern Gosdin, he played on the Hank Williams Jr and Friends Album, just to name a few highlights before he got tired of the Nashville politics and Bull, and moved back to West Virginia where he started the Southern Mix Band, anyway if any of you have any funny or interesting stories please e-mail them to me at telecat@hotmail.com so I can pass them on to our Webmaster and she can add them to our Dedication page, once again, Thank You all very much for any input. Is that the same Homesteaders that Jim Pierce (ex-Wynn Stewart, JUdy Lynn, played piano with in 1969 into 1970?. They played on the Opry according to Jim, it was his first time on the Opry. He also did a stint with Jim Ed Brown in 1970. |

Jason,I don't think Jim Pierce ever worked for the Homesteaders. The group had a pretty good turn over in the early 70's.At one time the group consisted of Gordon Cash,Frank Evans,John Stacey and Gary Boggs.I don't remember the group ever having a piano player.I don't remember the exact year(1971-74)they were the road band for Jeanie C. Riley. Her manager and bass player was Johnny Rogers. Another tidbit is that in the early to mid 60's Jack Boles played guitar with the Homesteaders. After he got off the road he was a saleman for Sho-Bud Guitars for years. Thats when I met him and bought his 58 Tele in 1973 and had it stolen in 1975. I came to Nashville in Oct.1968 and was introduced to Gary when he was working for Connie. He was a fine player. Gary Boggs was a very good friend of mine and a great player. I met Gary when he came to Atlanta with Nat Stuckey. We became friends instantly and when he was in Atlanta he would stay at my house. I visted him in Nashville at his home there. I have several pictures if you need them. I spoke with him by phone just before his untimely death. |

Thanks guys, any more anectdotes would be helpful, earl, was Joe Willis or Mike Sipco with them at the time you remember, and yes any pictures would be helpful, once more thanks for the memories guys, one more anectdote from the Homesteader days, once they were backing Jeannie C. at a show in Florida or should I say they were supposed to, I got to go with them and I was just a little feller then, about 8 or 9, anyway, I thought "heck we're goin to Florida" so all I packed was short sleeved shirts and shorts, well it was warm when we left Nashville and lo and behold we get to Georgia and right into the heart of one of the worst snowstorms in Georgia history, had to be, anyway the news was it only extended to the Fla border well we didnt make it that far, Jeannies bus was hung up in the median in about what seemed to me to be a 8 ft snowbank and the show was cancelled, bout froze my rear end off, but thank god there were happier and better gigs I got to go on when he was with George Jones......more on that later BB ------------------ |

Billy, I was playing with your dad at Billy Lee's in Akron in the late 60's or early 70's. Someone requested San Antonio Rose. I was playing lead guitar and I just started playing it. I was not used to playing in a band with a steel. So I just played the whole thing. Gary looked at me with that big grin on his face, and said, " whats the matter Rog, didn't ya think I knew the song." I talked to Jackie Bower, and he has some old pictures that I will scan and send to you. Roger |

Gary invited me to his house as we only lived 35 miles from each other when I was 13 or 14. Much to my surprise when we got there was Jim Murphy. Murph played for 4 hours while I recorded every lick..ah yes, the true fan! I took that tape and played it for months. I still have that tape to this day. Gary was the first steel player with tone that I ever had the chance to meet and talk with. I'd go with my mom and dad and listen to him play in a small club. Every once in a while, I'd get invited to play a tune or two...how excited I got. As my pro career Gary will be missed... JB |
