As a working musician in the early seventies, I remember Muleskinner was a "hit" in Northern California. I remember seeing the vinyl record stacked high in the front of Tower Records in San Francisco. Maybe Warner Bros did not do their job but there was a big local reaction; a lot of us were doubling on electric guitar and banjo and Muleskinner had the best of both; it was a revelation. I loved the way Richard Green never hit the four chord in Muleskinner Blues yet made it seem like he had. Pete

Pete, I think with hindsight the album had a lot of sales potential, even Warners missed the boat on country-rock until they pushed Emmylou Harris with her 1975 debut album, and actually got enough $$ to pull the Hot Band together.

Considering how big Bluegrass and Newgrass got in the 1970s, the fact that Dueling Banjos was a hit, (the soundtrack album was mainly taken from an early 1960s bluegrass LP which Clarence supplied rhythm guitar for), as well as the festival, college and bluegrass circuit opeing up for this sort of act. It's a shame they didn't push it, but it seems a basic harsh calculation of the simple fact that Clarence had died and they didin't think there would be a group to support it. A harsh decision.
