has anyone ever recorded the old standard 'Laura' on PSG ? A guitarist I know asked me this tonight & I said I thought it was the sort of thing that would probably sound great on C6th but I don't recall ever hearing any recording of it at all. I did a forum search & found a post from Al Marcus in which he said that he played it live once but are there any recordings out there ? |

Hi Mickd, I have my version of "Laura" on my E6th neck on cassette and Video. But just me, no band. I think I did it on my old Sho-Bud Super-Pro. But I would sure like to hear it with a band done by Buddy Emmons or Reece Anderson....al |

I recorded Laura on an album in 1977. It is no longer available. Originally I did it on C6th but the last few years I've played it on E9th. To me it sounds better there, sustain, tone. It can be done with a standard pedal setup. We just are not familiar with playing these chord voicings on E9th. |

Iīm not sure if itīs the tune youīre talking about, but there is a track called "Laura (Whatīs He Got That I Ainīt Got)" on "Corn Pickin`And Slick Slidin`" by James Burton and Ralph Mooney. Ralph plays it in E9, obviously. |

Joe - I don't think thats the one I'm thinking of. Its got an unusual chord progression and Frank Sinatra was the one who made it well known, I believe. Al - would that be non-pedal E6th or would that be like C6th pedal, but raised a few tones ? Randy - I believe BE said that all the C6th stuff is there on the E9th neck if you know where to look (sounds like you do ) Mick |

Actually,Laura is the theme song of a famous murder/suspense movie of the same name.It starred Dana Andrews,Gene Tierny in her film debut and was released about 1947.Its haunting melody received an Oscar nomination. I've been playing it for over 30 years on both E9 and C6.It works both ways depending on the band and what your sound is all about. WF |

Mickd- I played it on E6th just about same pedals as C6 or A6 or B6 or Bb 6. Yes, you can play it on any tuning, if you know the song. Randy, I would like to hear your version of it. Bet it is great! [This message was edited by Al Marcus on 07 June 2001 at 08:28 PM.] |

Warren, yeah that was a nice themesong. I always liked Julie London's cool, nostalgic vocal, accompanied by Barney Kessel's guitar. Al, yeah, me too. |

Look at that! Tab and all! What a forum! And to think, I had to figure this song out all by myself in 1949. I was born too soon, and too late smart..........al [This message was edited by Al Marcus on 10 June 2001 at 06:38 PM.] |

Mick, I'd like to tell you that I sat up all night writing that out, but actually I had done it a long time ago for my friend Bud Harger, who has great taste in music. Now I remember thinking afterward that the Eb- four bars from the end is unnecessarily awkward, when you could play it at the 18th fret alot easier:
If you use 3 picks, I'd either strum it or drop string 6 out. That goes for all the 4 string voicings... find the tone you like the least, and leave it out. Al, you're dead wrong... you're just 50 years ahead of your time, that's all |

John thanks for taking the trouble to post the tab for this. I've only been on C6th (B6th in my case) for about a month now, but I just love it. Mick |
