I made the treks to Billy Coopers and several individuals houses back in 97 when I was planning on buying a new steel (first new one in 25 years)in order to try as many brands as I could, examine fit/finish etc.

I bought Zum. It might be an Emmons "pretender," but I liked it better than the Emmons's I tried.
it's all so subjective,

I might have bought Mullen, Fessenden and likely have been as pleased with construction issues, feel, and sound.

If I had unlimited funds I would likely love an anapeg;I have not gotten to play one.yet.

but as I have posted before, I LOVE my Zum.

My push/pull covers about 90% of what I'll ever want in a steel guitar and being rebuilt by Mike Cass I can say it came in as a new guitar.
It's just perfect for me but if I'd had the funds for a brand-new guitar I'd have a look at Fulawka or JCH. Or I'd talk someone out of my dream guitar, it sits in CA not knowing that I even exist

Well, I'm very fond about my Derby!
But there's something in the timbre of a Franklin, that can't be reached with another guitar, that golden sound!!
If I ever have the financial possibility of buying a D10, new or used, with the same set-up I have now, Franklin is for me the way to go. JJ

Paul
If I had a choice it would be....A Fender D 12 that Leo was working on during his time at Music Man. I saw a prototype,,,This was supposed
to be a well guarded secret,, all pull and a
finish to die for.

Talk about a "Bigsby" Leo has something here
that looked like a piano rubbed finish as the
body was "walnut". I played it.

Iam not at liberty to disclose where this guitar is, as it does exist today,,but is in the possesion of someone very close to him.

If I go to the Namm show which I doubt I will
call the person who has this beauty and ask if she would consider selling it to me.

Now that would really be the icing on my cake
wouldnt it?. I have held this information back,,,but I cannot disclose the whereabouts
of this guitar.

I will post any further information as it becomes available, The Spirit of Leo rides again.

Mike and Mike-thanks for considering the guitar we have made-Who among us wouldn't like to take a spare $25,000 or so and order about a half dozen of our top favorite makers pedal steels??? Will someone please tell me more about ANAPEG-I only know that this is Australian made and Brumley plays one-I have never seen or heard it-and one more thing for a dimwit-you guys talking about ZOOM-is this a nickname for ZUMSTEEL???

I don't live where I can see or try a lot of different steel guitars. So when I decided to finally get a new one, I read as many opinions on the Forum as I could, e-mailed a dozen or so players for opinions, etc, and after much consideration, and based on my impatience with waiting, I picked Carter because it seemed to rate right up there with all the others, but also because I could get it in 30 days!
I've never regretted it!

Everyone has their own opinion of the best pedal steel - and they mostly differ..

Brett-you are so correct-we all have opinions and they do vary-sometimes we choose to agree and sometimes not-this post was made to solicit those opinions of what steels players like and why-and as several forumites stated-they cannot go to every convention and play every guitar available so they rely on feedback of this type from others on the forum-the only one wrong answer here came from the self centered and narrow minded individual who didn't care what anybody else owns or would care to play-perhaps he could start another thread called "Why I Don't Give A Flying Leap What Guitar You Like"

Let me put it this way:
I know players, no matter about their skills, that are always chasing after the newest toys, more pedals, more knobs on their amps, more .....
The same kind of people that always need the newest computers or cars or stereo's, no matter if they ever need all the gimmicks.

I know players, who start with a worn-out guitar, that doesn't stay in tune, or play very heavy or.... who improve when they have a new machine.

I know players, who always like to play what their idols play, if their idols change brands, or start playing a U 12, or have a new change, they feel they need it too...

I know players, who try to reach a sound they have in their head, but try to archieve it for a life-time, and always stay unsatisfied 'cause they never seem to find it, always looking for the holy grail

I know players, who are satisfied with the sound and possibilities they have, and always try something else, maybe to prove to themselves they already have the right thing.
(Like going for a test-drive in a LADA, and then leave the carsale very satisfied in their own Mercedes )They already found their grail

I know players, who have their sound in their head, but don't have the money to buy that peticular guitar, and go for a guitar that "has almost the same sound as" a ....

maybe a can find more groups....

food for thoughts, and to me:
The guitar is as good, or as bad, as the player...
Food tastes as good as the cook that prepares it, That's why players like Billy Phelps always sound like a hors 'd ouvre and I like a sac of Dutch potatoes
