Dear Buddy and forum,

I've always wondered: who or what is changing the tremolo speed on the steel guitar amp during Ray Price's Nightlife?

Please explain this to a Michigander (me) who ain't got a clue.

Thank you,
Drew Howard

On Nightlife I always assumed he was using the volume pedal to get the "tremolo" effect.

I never noticed Buddy using any tremolo in Night Life. Is it only in a certain section?

Does anyone know where you can get the TAB for Nightlife?

Or does anyone have it?

Son of a gun, I just listened to the intro and turnaround on Rebel's site and sure enough, the tremolo IS there!

Yeah Buddy cut that on a ShoBud through a Fender amp and the amp had Tremolo on it. Mighty cool sound.

Russ,
If Mr. Emmons can be believed, you are correct! It was Grady.

Why Gregg… as Ray Price would so eloquently put it: "Would I lie to you?"
Seriously, it was a Sho~Bud, it was Grady, and it was his amp, which was a Magnatone.

Wow you learn something new every day on here. Buddy it was a Magnatone?? I could almost swear you told me some time ago it was a Fender amp....but I could almost swear "now" I'm mistaken Does this amp have a Tremolo on it? Waaaaaaaay cool.
So where is that ShoBud now? and which one was it? Professional?Fingertip?Permanent? I'll have to say that I'm not familiar with your shobud steels you played and/or recorded with.....but would like to learn more my friend.

Ricky,
It was a permanent model I played up to the time the Emmons guitar came out. Where it is I don't know. I probably sold it to pay my tab at Tootsies.

Hmmm. I guess I gave Buddy more credit than he deserves. I just figured it was extremely good volume pedal control. Ends up, it had nothing to do with his talent!

Herb I swear I'm not really Swearing...Ha.
Buddy; thanks for the confirmation on that ShoBud.
So where ever that Permanent is..so be it...and I understand the tab at Tootsy's thing now...ah...ha......
So that puts your particular permanent and Jimmy Day's Blue Darlin(which Kevin Owens has now)Permanent......built about the same time??? Would I be correct or close to correct without having to swear again??
Sorry for these questions; but I'm into that sorta thing and having you right here to answer them....is spoilin' me.....But you can take a breather if ya want..it won't hurt my feelings.
But thanks for your memory pal.

Lee, you were right but it was the wrong record. I used the volume pedal tremolo effect on a fill behind Ernest Tubb's original recording of Half A Mind. It was in late 1957 and I didn't want to wait around for Ray to cut The Night Life, so I went ahead and used it with ET.

Ricky… The permanent Sho~Bud I used on Night Life was several guitars past Jimmy's Blue Darlin. Back then, if somebody wanted the guitar I was playing on the road, Shot would sell it out from under me. When I'd get back to town, he'd box it up, ship it, and I'd start on a new cabinet. I didn't mind except for one guitar, which was made from zebra wood. You could walk from left to right in front of it and see the grain change from dark to light and light to dark. We had to special ordered the wood and there wasn't enough left for another cabinet, so I went back to maple. I sold the guitar I built at the same time I built Jimmy's to Pete Drake it and ended up on a ton of recordings. Pete gave it back to me and I gave it to the Country Music Hall Of Fame.

Hey Buddy....Man thanks for that history lesson....you are a true gentleman.
Hey I think we found that ShoBud. Over on that other thread in "Steel Players" on one of those topics about you; didn't Anne from Canada just post that she has the ShoBud she got from you in the 60's.??
Wow if it's the zebra/tiger stripe maple.....that would be way cool to see pictures of that one again.....maybe she can post them.....Anne you out there???
Thanks again Buddy....as I absolutely love the History of ShoBud and what went on and You and Shot were quite a team....and thanks for all that.

Since we got to the subject, and like Ricky, I'm a hog for a Sho Bud history, I'd like to know when Shot moved the production from Madison to Nashville. I just recently got back my beloved Madison made D10 and I've always wondered when it was built.

Ricky,
The guitar I have is Jimmy's first D-10 Sho-Bud (the one with the inlaid spade on the front). I guess around 63 or 64.

Buddy,
Do you remember when that guitar was built?

thanks
Kevin

I think I'll hang on to it and put it in my "Hall of Fame" when I open it up in 2025.

Is that the same guitar of Jimmy's that Larry Sassar had in St. Louis one year for sale? I remember him telling that four were made with the card symbol. One for Jimmy, one for Buddy E, one for Buddy C, and one for Pete Drake I believe. If I'm wrong somebody correct me. Each guitar had a different card symbol on it.

Back cover of Lloyd Green's "Hit Sounds"-album shows him playing a similar permanent Sho Bud with an inlaid heart-symbol. Dunno if it's his gittaar though!!??
