My personal desert island list would start with Stan and Astrud Gilberto seen here in a weird 1964 clip from the period when Stan had Gary Burton in his quartet. It looks like a cross between the set of White Christmas and a gay bar. Astrud looks a little comotose and Stan throws a few lascivious glances her way. This is about the time when their affair broke up her marriage to Joao Gilberto. Stan was an incredible musician but a horrible person to his friends and family. Cool clip. I read that when they were doing the recording of "Girl From" that Joao was originally supposed to sing the song, but his English was not so good so they got Astrud to sing a demo for him to listen to the English words. The rest is history. Getz did have the evil eye on her in the video!! Garry Burton looks like an elongated version of Sherman on the Rocky and Bullwinkle show. Great sound and a classic tune. I played it on my gig last night. |

Yes, Astrud definitely looks like she O.D.'d on quaaludes!  Of course, a lotta people back in the '60s looked the same way. (Ergo, the term "spaced-out".) |

What a great tenor man. I love Getz's sound... and that tune, although, I must've played it 2,000 times, is still fun... as is all Jobim's stuff. |

Gary Burton looks so young! Ah, but he'll always be an old fuddy duddy to me.  Stan Getz is so badass it's painful. |

Thankfully when I played with Gary Burton he had lost those glasses. Yeah Getz is ANYTHING but PC here. Beautiful warm tone, coupled to a cold cold heart. All in all it looks like a Thai ladyboy bar, with snow. Astrud had a lovely voice and little stage persona. Contrast that with Frank just sitting there. [This message was edited by David L. I think I know what y'all mean about the 'look' that stan has (after the singer walks on stage) , but I don't understand your suggestion that she might be on something. ?? |

Great clip Andy. The funniest thing to me is: she's singing into a mic on stage. Then she walks off stage, still singing and the sound of her voice doesn't change! |

May God give all us guys an audience like that - all gorgeous young women in tight sweaters and short-shorts. I wonder what the heck the supposed pretext was for that scene? Astrud may or may not have been on something. That was the laid-back bossa nova style back then. And hey, Stan's just doing his job - keeping an eye on the lead singer and playing the heck out of his tenor.------------------ |
