The world is a poorer place with Jerry's passing, but a far richer place, having been graced with his beautiful, beautiful music. Aloha, Jerry Byrd. His family is in our thoughts and prayers.

I learned about Jerry Bryd's death in an unusual way while listening to the Paul Harvey morning news show on the radio yesterday, Wednesday, February 13th.

I thought to myself, "How many steel guitar players would have their death announced by Paul Harvey?"

Certainly Jerry Bryd deserved it!

You can listen for yourself at Paul's website at the URL:

http://www.paulharvey.com/

Just click the Wednesday morning link and the program will playback on Windows Media Player.

Jerry's place in the steel guitar community is well earned and deserved.

I can still remember talks I had with Red Rhodes years ago when I lived in Los Angeles. Red thought very highly of Jerry's playing technique and his ability to get so much out of a non-pedal steel guitar.

My best wishes go out to Jerry's family.

Aloha Jerry Bryd.

For those who wish to keep memories of Jerry Byrd's RICH MUSICAL SOUNDS alive and vibrant, be aware that Jerry's own records and those on which he has appeared with a variety of vocalist, Hawaiian, country and pop, are posted weekly on the "unofficial" Jerrybyrdfanclub.com web site. If you love Jerry Byrd, thrilled at his music, and never want it to fade, do give the web site a listen. You can play those tunes as many times as you wish. Enjoy! And yes, this web site will continue "up and running" as long as there is a heartbeat in this olde man. Jerry Byrd will surely be "missed" but ne'er forgotten.

April 11 has allways been a remembered day in my life, it being my birthday..

Now it will allways remembered also as the day we lost one of the Greatest ICONS in the steel guitar world.

Mr. Byrd will allways be remembered whenever steel guitars, and the greatest of the great players are talked about!!

Larry

I had the pleasure of hearing Jerry at Scotty's 25th Steel Convention. Jerry told the croud he would never be back to StLouis for another show. I wonder if he ever did ?
He and Scotty were great friends.
I never could play a non pedal steel, but I know some Byrd licks . Thanks Jerry. Could be I will meet you when God calls me.
Hope so.

I am very glad that Jerry is now in the very wonderful place he fully deserves. But Hawaii is just not the same and a bit less wonderful with him gone. The void he left can never be anywhere near filled; But he wanted us to try, and I think most that knew him will.

Aloha,
DT~

Denny, well said.
Many above also have said some truely wondeful things for this group eulogy.

I am SURE Jerry is looking on from above at his many steeler decendants,
and maybe giving the little nudge into better intonation and a perfect tone, at a critical time, to help out.

We will miss him. IMHO, his influence will always live on, as long as ther are STEEL GUITARS. He was and will always be a big part of the evolution.

We all learned a great deal from Jerry Byrd. His playing, like no other, influnced success in country music as no other player before or since. My condolences to his family. He will be missed by us all.

I recall the year I bought a beat up old Ric frypan in Hawai'i and was blandly playing away at the Elks Club when Jerry walked in! I froze on the spot ! I asked Jerry to play this ugly old guitar, he said he had no picks or bar with him. I happened to have exactly what he needed and again asked him to play. Man, that old beater took on a new life under his beautiful touch. I was playing r/guitar accompaniment and noticed he played the guitar in the tuning I was using at the time...F#9 and flaulessly ! When he was done, he handed the picks back to me. Those picks were never used again and were mounted on a pic I have of him. Of course, that old guitar has never sounded the same since ! He was a masterful musician.
