Russ was recently presented "The Legends Award" by The North Tennessee Steel Guitar Assocition.

He joins Hall of Famers and Legends Jimmie Crawford (RIP Jimmie), Buddy Emmons, Lloyd Green, Don Helms, John Hughey, Weldon Myrick, and Billy Robinson. as well as Legend, The Late Jim Murphy.

Russ has hundreds of Nashville recording sessions to his credit as a musician, and/or producer, as well as working the road and The Grand Ole Opry with many top stars. He has traveled The World working with Charlie McCoy and others, as well as being a staff musician on The Hee Haw TV Show for 13+ years. He plays multiple instruments.

Russ works most of The Nation's Steel Guitar Shows, and is active in instructing and teaching Steel Guitar.

Russ is definitely a Candidate for The International Steel Guitar Hall of Fame. Let's get busy and get him inducted!

BTW, He also plays a LEGEND.

I 100% agree with Bob Knight! Russ is one super multi-talented musician that just plays great! Bob...let's do the nomination process for the International Hall of Fame for Russ. You and I would be proud as we both taught Russ every steel lick etc he knows! HA

I've been saying this for several years now. Besides steel,Russ also plays lead guitar, trumpet, and SINGS. Russ did all of this while working w/ the group,"Barefoot Jerry",which,BTW,was one of the first "rock" groups to utilize pedal steel in its organization. Russ' qualifications definitely deserve to be considered for induction into the SGHOF!
Besides that,he's a pretty good ol' boy to boot. (Additionally,he has very good taste in picking out a wife too. That, alone, should qualify him for the SGHOF. )

AMEN! I posted some time ago that Russ should be nominated for the Hall of Fame this time around(and I think he should be inducted). I am proud to be able to count him, and his lovely wife among my friends.

Congratulations, Russ.

It was a pleasure and honor to share the stage with you at the Baldknobber's in Branson the past weekend. Your music history, your outstanding playing and your great personality make you highly deserving of the prestigous award.

Bob,
Thanks for the great post on Russ. He earned a spot in the SGHOF a long time ago. When I listen to the unique playing (and writing) he did with Barefoot Jerry, it shows how creative Russ was and is.

Russ, congratulations on the Legends award !
And many more to come.

Man, am I getting the press these days or what!!! Bob Knight, you're definitely hired as my press agent....because you said everything in this post that I told you.
About the H.O.F., we all must admit, that would be the ultimate 'happening' for any of us steelers, but we don't have to look very far to see a long, long list of very worthy candidates; it would be very easy for me to list at least a dozen who would already be in if I were doing the choosing, of course I won't name names, you all have your own opinions of who they are, but I must name just one who IMO is long overdue, and thats my fellow Nashville Bar Association member, Sonny Garrish...brilliant career and not a nicer gentleman on the planet. I wish I saw more of him these days.
Thanks again, Bob, and all you guys, and NTSGA....with the world of friends Laney and I have, who needs awards.....I DO, AND YOU CAN'T HAVE IT BACK !!!!!!

In this layman's opinion Russ Hicks takes a backseat to nobody when it comes to playing steel guitar. I have been watching him for years and he consistently amazes me with what he can do with the instrument and at the same time make it look so easy. He plays down his skills and abilities but possesses what it takes to be in the Hall of Fame. No one offers more and gives more to the steel guitar than Russ.

Man I tell ya what. After all the things that has been said about Russ, the pickens are slim as to be able to add anything except, Russ is one of the best, which has done been said. He has no limits as to what he can play. And as stated he takes a back seat to one. And I think that another thing that speaks for itself and to Russ being a Legend, is how he brought up the name of another one of my hero's as well as Russ, and that is Sonny Garrish. I steal have my Nahsville Bar Association Album and that was my first lesson in what good Steel Playing is all about. Your the man Russ and you have my respect for showing your respect for Players like Sonny Garrish. And you are worthy of any award that the Steel Guitar world has to offer.

Russ, you are the man....

My inspiration... When I first started playing in 73, I found The Kitty Wells & Johnny Wright music hour, sponsored by Cal Worthington "the car sales man. I would get up Saturday morning at dark:30 to catch my favorite steel player- backing Kitty, Johnny, daughters, Ruby, Carol Sue.... what a hoot! Good times....

Thanks Russ!

Bob..Thanks for this post....first of all...sorry for not recognising you in Dallas this Year at first..I think we had just spent about 20 hours or so on Planes and in airports...not really feeling my usual 15o% !!!!!!!
I agree about Russ...super nice guy and great player..I will vote any time for him in HOF....I think Smiley should be nominated too.....what he has done to promote Steel Guitar....or even Nashville...maybe we could have Smiley as Tourist Ambassador for Nashville.......He certainly looks after us whenever we are in Nashville as you know.
Saving the Best untill Last !!!!.....Laney tells me that we are welcome in their house anytime we are in Nashville...and has proven it...we have been made to feel so welcome and comfortable there...eaten there...played Music..Laney has sung....just felt so at home...a wonderful feeling so far from Home

Thanks for the post Bob....Thanks Laney..Russ and Smiley for just being who you are
