I first heard JayDee when he took tom Brumley's place with Buck Owens around 1968 in Santa Rosa, Calif.
During the break I played his Emmons on the C6 neck. He had those pedals playing like butter and the tone was just the greatest that I heard at that point in time. that was the first time I saw PP Emmons, or played one.
JD and I have exchanged emails much later and I have bought some of his CD. He is really great and a nice guy to boot...al

There have been many comments on the Forum lately that most country players, or E9 players at least, sound like clones. There is some truth to that. But.

I can pick Jay Dee's playing out of a hundred steel players behind a curtain. Nobody, but nobody, has that same combination of phrasing, attack, and tone.

David, if you've got any more clips, bring 'em on. Watching a master at work is always appreciated.

Watching Jay Dee on the GOO when it was still on CMT, he was with Vince Gill performing "Look at Us". At the end of the tune is the steel closing. The whole audience sits in absolute silence as Jay Dee ends the tune. It was perfect.

I would have cracked.....................

I attended JD's siminar in Spokane in May of this year. I learned a lot in a short 3 hours. JD is a great guy. David Wright was also at the jam and I must say he is a pretty good 'ol boy too!

Jay Dee defies the Nashville E9 groove that most have tried to attain. His signature sound on these ballads bring out an emotion from this otherwise unemotional observer that few can conjure up, but he's one of very few that can move me.
I also didn't notice the Emmons logo on the front of his guitar. Hmm, mystery, maybe?

David, and all who have said nice things about my playing on Borrowed Angel. I really do appreciate the coments. The guitar I am playing in the clip is an MCI whitch my friend Frank Carter, rebuilt for me. It is a close 2nd to the p-pull, as far as sound,I have found so far.It is an all pull so, it can be loaded with changes that I can`t realy put on the p-pull and, make it work like would like. I don`t take it out too much but, I play it a lot at home.
