Vance Terry, the brilliant steel player with Billy Jack Wills Western Swing Band, Bob Wills & The Texas Playboys and Jimmie Rivers and the Cherokees now has access to the Forum and is considering making an instructional video. How many readers would be interested in buying a copy? Would a video with 15 to 30 minutes of history of the B. J. Wills Band then the rest non pedal instruction be good or a pedal and non pedal together? Or 1 of each? Vance could really use the dough and he's on the "Comeback Trail!" He's here now and will be for most of the day. So if you want to say Hi now's the time.

I remember Vance from the 40'@ 50's. Yes, I would like to see him do a video on BJW, although I am partial to the Playboys since I have known Herb R. from those days. Iwould prefer a non-pedal video for old times sake. Glad to see someone else rembers the older players. Bill Chaviers,ICQ 36667112.------------------

I would think that all of them would be great! When I get re-employed I could even buy 'em

Bill, This is Vance Terry. I took lessons from Herby when he was with the Texas Playboys at Wills Point. He tought me how to play the scales. As a result I know where every note is. Maybe I'll make 2 videos!

Welcome Vance. I'm a newcomer to steel and have enjoyed your playing on the BJW CD I own. Can you tell me what tuning you used on those recordings? With respect to a video, I think we need a lot more non-pedal videos in the marketplace. The only one I'm familiar with is the Cindy Cashdollar one and consider it pretty basic. I'd prefer to see something with more content. Best regards, -Bill

Vance, Welcome to the forum! I'd love to see a more advanced nonpedal video than the Cindy Cashdollar videos. Even a closeup of you just playing various songs would be a big help. If you've seen the Homespun Tapes videos, they do a very nice "split screen" approach with two cameras, one showing the right hand and one showing the left hand.

Vance,My name is Greg and I'm a newer steel player. I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your work with Jimmie Rivers as captured on the Brisbane Bop CD. Absolutely thrilling music! Can you let us know what instrument and what kind of tuning you used on that stuff? Are you still in Sacramento? Glad to have you involved in the Forum! Greg

Hey Vance, I'm a big fan of the Brisbane Bop. I've played DeMarcos a few times myself. I'm definitly interested in a video and let us know about any live performances. I'm here in northern Ca. Dave ZirbelBy the way, I heard from Mylos that you wound up with my old S-12 MSA with the funky green marble formica(which was all my fault)

Vance your work with Billy Jack, and Jimmie Rivers is just outstanding. You and Tiny Moore were a great pairing. I'd like to see some stuff on Billy Jacks band, but i would also have to echo what Brad said about a more advanced nonpedal video, preferably one on the jazzier improvisational styles. Hope you'll be sticking around here for a while

Hi Vance,Your playing on the Billy Jack and Jimmie Rivers stuff is exceptional. I would definitely want a tape. If I'm correct I think you had some pedals on your Bigsby and I would love to know the tunings and the pedal arrangements,(copedents).

hey vance, it's always bugged me that you aren't easy to find...you're a legend and deserve the limelight!maybe a small part of one video could show what the heck those hundreds of pedals of yours do!

Yeah Man! I'll buy it.If I wasn't busy finishing up Murph's CD,I would probably try to get involved myself,as I have a background in producing instructional videos.I did two for Hellecaster Will Ray a few years ago,and maybe the first one ever made around 1980 for L.A.bassist Carol Kaye.Anyhow, good luck and keep on playing. And Mike,if there's ANYTHING I can do to help - please let me know.Guys like Vance and Murph are national treasures as far as I'm concerned. -MJ-

You can put my name down for a copy of that tape. If it's possible to wear out a compact disc, there's a serious danger of it happening with my Jimmie Rivers and Billy Jack CDs. Thanks for all the great listening, Vance. Live long and well.

Hey fellows, thanks for all of yours kind words. My friend and student,Mike has a computer and got me to the Forum. I'll be here once or twice a week. Keep the questions easy! When I started with Billy Jack I had a Fender guitar. Then I bought a triple neck Bigsby. I used A6,G13 and E13. When I was with Jimmy Rivers I used a Wright Custom. I had 19 pedals and three knee levers. I tuned one neck to C6 and the other neck to E13. I still have that guitar. I'm going to try to make a video. I'll try to stay away from the basics. Maybe I'll try and make one with no pedals on the Billy Jack Wills Western Swing music and one with pedals on the Rivers stuff. Would you be interested in 20 minutes or so of Billy Jack's history? Let me know, Vance Terry

Hi Vance , I sent you a message on the bar chatter. I would be interested and look forward to a video and any information about BJW, Tiny and your views about the steel. I wrote to Tiny many years ago and he gave me an address for you. I sent you a fan letter but I dont know if you ever got it. (It was pretty silly) Anyway I would like to buy your CDs so I'll send you a bankcheque.

Hey Vance, I'm also very interested in any product you can come up with. One of the bands I'm working with is doing a few of those BJW and JR tunes. I'd like to know how to play them right!

Vance,Let me bug you with a couple more questions. It is my understanding that your bigsby was originally non-pedal and Paul Bigsby added two pedals to it at a later date. Is this true and what did those two pedals do? Which recordings were done non and which had the two? When was the transition? Thanks again. Mark Durante

Hi Bill say Hi to Red Barnes for me. Tell him to come back for another Western Swing Hall of Fame. I originally got the Bigsby plummed for 2 pedals but it was a year before I could get pedals on it. That guitar cost me 650. I had to borrow 50 from Cotton Roberts to pay for it. I played it the first time in Bakersfield on the way back to Sacramento. The pedals lowered the 2nd string a whole tone and the raised the 3rd string a 1/2 tone. Anything after 54 has pedals on it. Thanks for your questions Vance Terry

Hi Vance, livin in Germany I had the great opportunity to play the DeMarcos last Sept. I'm a newcomer to the steelguitar and I only have the Cashdollar videos but I think they are good to start but too basic. I really love your work with J. Rivers and would buy any video you could come up with. I'm really into the non-pedal stuff so I would recommend going this direction. Andy

Vance,Thanks again for your reply. You mention one pedal lowered the 2nd string a whole tone and the other raised the 3rd a half tone. Can you tell me what neck or tuning this was on and therefore which notes these altered. If you want me to pick your brain all night I'll be right over, (but you won't get rid of me then).
