I just got the CD of JB's 'By Request' and am delighted with it. I am puzzled however by the guitar shown on the sleeve notes - it looks like a D8 but with a weird offset steel headstock. What is this and why is it shown ? Surely JB was using the BD7 on these tracks ? Does anyone know what tunings were used on this album - is it all C6 with the low c# ? |

That is a sho-bud D-8 especially made for Jerry Byrd by the late Shot Jackson. He tunes the top neck to A7/C6: E C A G E C# C A (low, low A {same note as the 10th string D-10 pedal 8}) bottom neck E C B A G F E note he does not install the 8th string on this neck. Most of the songs were done on one or the other neck on this guitar. If my memory serves me correctly, there maybe a tune or two where he uses his 8 string Fry Pan. take care, carl |

I would have sworn that there was more than one song where JB used his DIATONIC TUNING but then again, I could be wrong. |

Jerry's Sho-Bud is built as a 8 and 7 string guitar...7 strings divided over the nut width of that neck. There are only 7 tuning keys on that neck. Jerry does many of his Hawaiian tunes in E9th and E13th - don't rule any tunings out when it comes to JB ! |

i agree...stardust is awesome! you can obtain the tab from Jerry. He has stardust tabbed, as well as a ton of other arrangements. the intro to stardust wasn't tabbed("and now the purple dusk..."), but the rest of the song is there! lots of good slants! if you write him, ask for his catalog of arrangements. i think HSGA asks that you send a couple of bucks to offset his shipping. i've learned a lot from that tab! arranged by the master of touch and tone himself! |
