Is there any more news about the GoldTone Lap Steel? Have any Forumites purchased one?
If so, how about a first hand report?

Elderly Instruments was supposed to have them for sale, for a very good price.

Opinion from a steel guitar hobbyist...
A beautiful, detailed, wood-bodied lap steel with partial natural & brown burst finish.
Relatively hot p/u, with warm sound. Tasteful ornateness on chrome p/u cover & on "Kluson-style" tuners.
Other items -- some of the first ones I saw had minor surface blemishes. Maybe this was just with the first ones -- just something to watch for. I ordered one from a local store specifying no-blemish condition & received same.
Frets are similar to regular guitar metal strips & marked with pearl-like inlaid dots. Marking is 'different" to me. 2nd fret - 2 dots, 3rd - 1 dot, 5th - 2 dots, 7th - 1 dot, 9th - 2 dots, 12th - 2 dots, 15th - 1 dots, 17th - 2 dots, 19th - 1 dot, and fretboard ends at about the 21st position.
Hardshell case is very nice, but big, like for a regular sized guitar.
Overall, I think a good buy!!

I agree with John's assesment. I sent my first one back (one of the very early ones) for a replacement as the volume pot would not turn the volume all the way off. The replacement came quickly and with no problems.

The dot markings bother me as they are unlike most other guitars and there are several extra sets in my opinion it can be a bit confusing but they are true to the original Oahu guitar that was being copied.

The other thing I don't like (again true to the Oahu) is that in order to do right hand damping and not bump into the volume and tone knobs I have to position my hand closer to the neck. This puts my picks over the end of the neck where they bump into the fretboard. To avoid this problem I have removed the "ornate" pickup cover so I can right hand damp w/out hitting the knobs or the fretboard. Works for me though it exposes a couple extra holes in the metal near the pickup that don't have screws in them. Maybe later production runs will not have the extra holes.

The case is great but longer than it should be. They put the accessory compartment at the end of the guitar which is a shame as a shorter case would make it both lighter and great for airline travel.

Those complaints aside I think it is a great value and a fine looking instrument from a responsive company. I'm happy I bought one.

Thank you John and David for your response.

I just received a price quote from Elderly Instruments. They don't have any guitars in stock, but listed their selling price at $280. I expect their GoldTone Guitars to have blemishes, whenever they get a delivery.

A local music store in Seattle will order me a GoldTone Lap Steel, but does not stock them. I haven't checked with them for a price yet.

John and David would you reveal how much you paid for your GoldTone Guitars?

Hey... when we don't have any they're only $250! just kidding!

Actually, we do have them in stock right now at Downtown Sounds where I teach. I believe the price is $325, but you might want to call the store and check on the price. The toll free number is 800-564 8863. Local number in western Massachusetts is (413) 586-0998. Whenever you get a price quote from a dealer on this item, be sure to clarify whether or not that price includes a case. The first few Gold Tone lap steels were advertised and sold without cases, and the case became available later.

Roger,

I got mine at EzFolk.com they cost $299. They are asking $383 with the case. When I bought mine the price included shipping.

http://www.thebanjostore.com/ and click on the link for Lap Steel Guitar. Richard (of EzFolk) had it drop shipped from GoldTone in Florida. They were brand new and he hadn't seen one yet.

Let us know if you get one and what you think.

David
