For some reason I keep losing my capo and I bought a beard capo recently. It turns out it has scratched the crap out of the top of my Weissenborn fretboard with the center square piece of metal on the bottom. I also do not find it is a one hand attachment process as they claim.
Anyone else have the same problems? Anyone have a particular favorite capo?

I have a Beard Dobro capo. It did not scratch my fingerboard -- that has to do with string height, I guess -- but it takes me two hands to attach -- one hand to tighten the screw and one to keep it parallel to frets. Even though this capo is better than any other ones I've tried, it still mutes the strings to some extent (losing volume and bass response) so I very seldom use it. I would love to have a capo that did not kill the sound of my beloved old Dobro Model 45, but haven't found it yet.

I have not tried the Beard capo as of yet, but I have used a few. I am using the Scheerhorn right now, but I also find that it changes the tone of my instrument. I'm not sure that any capo will ever satisfy my needs, but I'm always looking anyway.

If its scratching your fretboard, your string height is probably a bit on the low side. The easiest thing to do is to glue a piece of felt or leather on the bottom of the capo so it will not scratch the fretboard.

Good luck!

Dwight, if you can find a Bradley capo, give it a try. After a few tries, you can one-hand it in seconds, and it has little, if any, effect on tone. I got mine from Ivan Guernsey several years ago, don't know where you'd find one. Can somebody help??

I just found this number for Elmer Bradley off a discussion on the Jerry Douglas website.

The nut is higher than the original nut that came on the weissenborn. I've had it quite high at one time, like a dobro, but then I have this capo bouncing up and down on the top of a hollow neck...

I don't know about a picture, but you can phone Elmer Bradley at 812-432-3205.

Occasionally you might find some of the small luthiers or dealers selling them, but the best bet is to just call Elmer direct.

I use a Leno capo on my Superior weiss. Sounds good and doesn`t scratch . I use it for Dobro also and I usually prefer it to the Beard and Flux capos I also have.

I use a Leno on my G-tuned lap steel, but upside down (so the lever is pointing up) -- if I face it the other way, the lever can hit the side of the neck. It's also a lot easier to put it on this way, although I sometimes notice the lever when I'm near the capo. I haven't knocked it loose, though, and I don't notice any major tone issues.

Have any of you guys noticed the Leno-type capos crimping the windings on your strings?
Just one of the reasons I switched. I always hated putting a capo on new strings, knowing what they would sound like after I took the capo back off.

I finally got around to calling Elmer Bradley at the number above. He said he's going to file down the nut that may touch the top of the guitar fretboard for me.
He takes personal checks, so I'll get a report out next year when I get it.
