Jeff, I'm flying to HNL in April for the HSGA convention. What's the best way to travel these days with a D-8 steel w/ legs? - UPS ship it to the hotel attn: me - carry on - box it and baggage check it/ - loosen strings? - where to hide bar?I only have the factory Fender case. (which needs a little repair) advise appreciated from all. Thanks - Chris ------------------ Chris Kennison Ft. Collins, Colorado "There is no spoon" www.seldomfed.com |

Chris:I talked to Duke Ching about this at Joliet. He just ships his guitar on the airplane in the regular case, reinforced with duct tape. Sounds risky to me, but he says he's never had a problem, and he travels every year to the HSGA and Aloha Intl bashes. Bill

Hi Chris,I did a considerable amount of traveling during the holiday season between LAX and HNL and between the islands. I never had a problem bringing my D-8 aboard the plane as a hand-carry. In fact, it fits rather nicely in the overhead bins. I have an original factory case too... it's very sturdy so, while it takes up the length of the bin, other passengers can still stack their belongings on top of it. Only warning: watch that tweed--it tears easily on those bin latches and other metal fixin's. But yes, I would carry it on the plane rather than UPS it or check it in--you do wan't to be able to sleep don't you?! I don't think it's really necessary to loosen the strings... steel guitar strings are pretty slack as is and you don't have to worry about that finely carved spruce top caving in under pressure. But I would recommend keeping the bar in the case with the guitar so when the clueless asks "Eh, what is dis?" you can whisk out the bar and show them how it's used. Good luck! I'm not a member of the HSGA but a number of folk have been elbowing me to check out the convention and get in on the fun. I hope they'll let me in to watch.

Bill, likewise buddy. Looking forward to it. I lived in HNL in the 70's. Went back for a visit in 2000 and things had changed quite a bit! But it's still nice there. Got my friend Stuart Yoshida to sign up and coincidently he's coming to visit his parents there, so he'll play with me at HSGA! He's in our band and looking forward to playing some uke. Should be a gas. ------------------ Chris Kennison Ft. Collins, Colorado "There is no spoon" www.book-em-danno.com
