Topic: Ques. on replacing tuning buttons

I bought 2 plastic tuning buttons to replace. The instructions I got were to remove the tuning key. This seems like an overkill. Does the shaft have to be heated that much or can it be done with the key in place? Thanks, Ron |

I have done ALOT of these ... heres a nice guide ...Buttons I always buy the "Ivoroid" buttons ... those don't go on well with heating ... Pressin' them on with a vise as described is the way to go (get some extras though ... breaks happen). Enlarging the hole is the trick ... I put the drill bit in the vise and turn the buttons by hand. Either way (heating or pressing) ... you are goin' to have to remove them from the guitar ... I tried Super Glue once ... got them half way on and it set up ...  Hope this helps ... ------------------

Black buttons. By the way, I once put on a new set of tuner buttons without taking the tuners off the guitar. I think the only reason I succeeded was because I didn't know what a stupid idea that was ...  |

I found them on the web the day after I gave up and put a set of white buttons on an old squareneck! |

I've done a few white plastic buttons without taking the tuners off. I use a small Butane torch to heat the cleaned shaft and just press 'em on by hand. Make sure you point the flame AWAY from the headstock, and remember heat rises! get the shaft hot enough and they go right on. |
