Is anyone familiar with a lap steel and amp made by Sound Projects Company called the Troubador? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2558303680&category=2384&rd=1 It's made of cast aluminum with and electrostatic pickup underneath the bridge. I recall running across an article about it and it's manufacturer some months ago while I looking for info on something else. I just got it with the amp, but now cannot find that article or anything else about it. Jason Lollar kindly identified the pickup type for me. |

Brendan, please keep us informed as to this critters sound and playability, as well as the amp that came with it. Definitly a curious couple of pieces. Hope it's a winner for you! |

Hi Russ and Ron, I hope I'll find that site again that had that article. I never dreamed at the time I would end up owning the guitar it described! The little I recall was that Sound Projects Co. made radios, the owners brother or brother in-law (something like that) had this design for a lap steel with a pickup similar, but different enough to apply for a patent, to a pickup made by Lloyd Loar years earlier. They ceased prodution of the guitar after a year or so with the onset of WWII. Unplugged the guitar has very nice sustain. The amp hums a bit as it needs new filter caps, the tone otherwise is very chunky and warm....I love it! I spoke with a fellow who restores old amplifiers, and he's confident we can get them both back in good order. I'll be glad to share the results. Thank you for your replys. Brendan |
