I tabbed out Joaquin Murphy's steel ride from Johnny Bonds "Drowin my sorrows" on 6 string C6. The audio was from a post in the steel player section of the forum. Does anybody know the chord structure of this song by chance, I only have that audio sample to go by. I like playing Murphy's ride, than free jam my own and then back to Murphy again, it's a great way to practice swinging your notes and develope your blocking. Boy, Murphy could block it incredibly clean. |

The solo section is the same as the chorus:/IV7 /----/ I6 /----/IV7 /----/ / I6 /----/ IV7 /----/ I6 /----/ /I6 / V7 / I6 /----/ The hyphens just indicate quarter notes. The F chord arp is kind of tricky to play clean, so I take a hint from JB and do what he did on "Steelin the blues". I slide the bar down as I pick those arp notes and let my bar hand fingers reach beyound the top of the bar to kill the string that was just played, then I slide back up as needed. This gives me a very clean sound on that passage with the same speed as Murphy. I know that some steel players use finger pick blocking and wonder which type of blocking Murphy might of used on that arp?Mike, thanks for the chords, I came up with the same thing, but just by feel. Thanks, Jesse! By the way, which C6th version did you use (the notes for all 8 strings)? I wonder if anyone has ever tackled Murph's entire version of Honeysuckle Rose and Sweet Georgia Brown?
The only other tab I know of is Oklahoma Stomp here on Ricky's great site: http://users.interlinks.net/rebel/steel/non-pedal.html I like how Scotty put out the Don Helms book of his songs and style...it would be awesome to have something similar for Joaquin Murphy too!

Jeff, I used a 6 string basic C6. Works for me anyhow. It is strange that there isn't a tab book out with thoery stuff on Murphy? I just now figured out how to use this online tabber program for retards, Tab Edit was just too much for me to get right. |

Very cool, Jesse! Murph apparently pick blocked, at least according to several folks who watched him closely. A few year ago, I took at stab at a few of his licks here: http://steelguitarforum.com/Forum8/HTML/001019.html I'd love to see someone do a Joaquin book with stndard notation and tab. |
