I tabbed out Joaquin Murphy's steel ride from Johnny Bonds "Drowin my sorrows" on 6 string C6. The audio was from a post in the steel player section of the forum. You will have to get the phrasing from the audio.

Does anybody know the chord structure of this song by chance, I only have that audio sample to go by. I like playing Murphy's ride, than free jam my own and then back to Murphy again, it's a great way to practice swinging your notes and develope your blocking. Boy, Murphy could block it incredibly clean.

The solo section is the same as the chorus:

/IV7 /----/ I6 /----/IV7 /----/
/ I6 /----/ IV7 /----/ I6 /----/
/I6 / V7 / I6 /----/

The hyphens just indicate quarter notes.

In bar 13 he implies other harmonies--I'm hearing iii7 to biii° to the V7 in bar 14.

The F chord arp is kind of tricky to play clean, so I take a hint from JB and do what he did on "Steelin the blues". I slide the bar down as I pick those arp notes and let my bar hand fingers reach beyound the top of the bar to kill the string that was just played, then I slide back up as needed. This gives me a very clean sound on that passage with the same speed as Murphy. I know that some steel players use finger pick blocking and wonder which type of blocking Murphy might of used on that arp?

Mike, thanks for the chords, I came up with the same thing, but just by feel. I can't really hear the chords on this audio sample to good.

Thanks, Jesse!

By the way, which C6th version did you use (the notes for all 8 strings)?

I wonder if anyone has ever tackled Murph's entire version of Honeysuckle Rose and Sweet Georgia Brown?

The only other tab I know of is Oklahoma Stomp here on Ricky's great site:

I like how Scotty put out the Don Helms book of his songs and style...it would be awesome to have something similar for Joaquin Murphy too!

Jeff, I used a 6 string basic C6. Works for me anyhow. It is strange that there isn't a tab book out with thoery stuff on Murphy? I just now figured out how to use this online tabber program for retards, Tab Edit was just too much for me to get right.

Very cool, Jesse! Murph apparently pick blocked, at least according to several folks who watched him closely.

A few year ago, I took at stab at a few of his licks here: http://steelguitarforum.com/Forum8/HTML/001019.html

I'd love to see someone do a Joaquin book with stndard notation and tab.
