In the London Evening Standard tonight theres a review of the Irish Festival (The Fleadh) with a picture of Bob Dylan playing what looks like a Stringmaster ! (well, he's certainly standing behind it anyway - confusingly, the reviewer says he was playing "pedal steel"). Since when has the great man been a picker ? |

Old Bob usually plays what he feels like playing! Mick is there any way you could scan & post that pic? I for one would really like to see it. I could tell you for sure if it is a Stringmaster. It probably is - you know how the press always get it all wrong . . Rick------------------

Mick: You get the distinction right when you say "standing behind," rather than "playing." When I saw Dylan in Toronto a couple of months ago, he played keyboard all night, as he has apparently been doing almost exclusively the past few months. His "music stand" was a near-mint double neck blond Stringmaster, which sat flush against the front of the piano. The only steel in the evening was some pedal on "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight." |

Rick I'll try to scan it tomorrow - but its a very shady black & white to begin with so it won't come out too well. Ian now I look again, his hands are *below* the neck - its like he's just got the steel there as a prop (well it fooled the reviewer anyway ). |

I see you are speaking of Bob Dylan. Years back Jody had an experience with Dylan. Its too long to tell the story, but you can find it somewhere here on past stories.Out in Fullerton California at the site where the Fender factory used to be is an overpass and the overpass was painted by school children in memory of the great guitar maker Leo Fender,it has become a shrine to Mr.Fender. On that overpass is a mural with Bob Dylan and Jody Carver sitting next to Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix ( my favorite) is pictured along side Jody and Bob Dylan. Very interesting story behind that, ask Jody for the story sometime,I.m sure you will enjoy it. Thanks Greg Sullivan |

Here's a photo from a show in Canberra, Australia, one year ago. As you can see, there's definitely a Stringmaster present: Here's another one, and Dylan obviously wondering how to tune that thing: It should be no surprise though, His Bobness has had a steel guitarist in his band since the mid nineties, if not longer. Here's the line up from the same show: Tony Garnier, bass Larry Campbell, guitar, steel guitar, ecc. Billy Burnette, guitar Jim Keltner, drums Steinar

Nice pics - thanks Steinar! That's identical to my Stringmaster. This is great - my favorite songwriter/singer and my favorite axe. All must be right with the universe after all . . . Rick------------------

He didn't touch it all last night in Glasgow, but it WAS there, in front of his piano (which he DID play, all night). Don't know if it had music on it, or what - it just seemed to be there! |

When I searched for these photos I found several photos from 2-3 years ago where there was a pedal steel on stage, placed on guitarist Larry Campbells side of the stage (that's the guy to the right on the first photo). Maybe Dylan just wants to have a Stringmaster on stage so he can admire the beauty of it (as it looks like he's doing on the second photo)? Steinar ------------------ www.gregertsen.com
