For those who have attended this event, is O'Hare the destination airport for this event, if one is coming from the west coast?

Can someone who has attended the event in the past tell me if Joliet, IL is a clean town, or a dirty suburb of Chicago. I have no doubt that the music will be good. So many of the towns in America have turned to garbage.

New York is like a fortress today because of the Republican Convention. Of course, I would not anticipate anything like this at a small event like the HSGA Convention.

I hate dirty places. If it is ever determined that the U.S. needs an enema, surely N.Y.C. is where they will insert the hose. I just hope the residents of N.Y.C. treat their personal hygiene better than they treat their town. Too bad, there are so many good things there.

Also, about how many people attend the HSGA event?

Many thanks, Rick

>For those who have attended this event, is >O'Hare the destination airport

It works, or the other, Midway? I drive.

>Can someone who has attended the event in >the past tell me if Joliet, IL is a clean >town, or a dirty suburb of Chicago.

the area around the Holiday Inn is suburban ,light industrial, semi-rural farm land a few miles out of town. Nice stop off the interstate. Looks like anyplace in the US. Personally I never leave the hotel except to eat once in a while - the music is the thing to do.

Chicago downtown is actually really fun - Navy Pier, Museums etc. Just pick your places to go.

>Also, about how many people attend the >HSGA event?

Perhaps 100-150. Small compared to Scotty's etc.

Rick...I attended Joliet for a number of years, but have not been there for quite some time now. The impression I received, the immediate area seems clean and is NOT a slum by any means. But as was mentioned above, once you are there, I doubt you'll venture very far from the hotel. There are some nice restaurants near by which, when I was there, encouraged jam sessions on their premises also. But everything "happens" at the hotel so there should be no concern on your part. The hotel incidently, is excellent. (Or it was when I was there !) Hope this helps.

How many people attend ? Well the main ballroom of the hotel is generally filled with chairs for the audience, and there are displays of items for sale scattered here and there. I don't have an accurate count on attendance as I haven't been there for many years...but rest assured you won't be alone ! You'll have a great time and the music is always super. You'll also enjoy the extra bonus of forming many new friendships. Just go and enjoy...have fun.

Rick C-I have been attending the Joliet HSGA show annualy for years-It is rather low key and laid back-I have played music with many Joliet area "hillbilly" musicians over the years and have good friends in the area-as far as the question if Joliet is "trash" of a city well it may not be the safest place to live-If you are coming I suggest that you land at Midway-It is closer to jump on I-55 S/B (towards Joliet) and probably overall much less hassle than O'Hare Intl.

Most non-driving convention attendees I've spoken to arrive at O'Hare. O'Hare is about 40 miles from Joliet. Limo service, cabs and rental cars are easily obtainable at
O'Hare. The route from O'Hare to Joliet is Interstate highway most of the way.

According to convention planner and Joliet resident Wally Pfeifer "we don't consider Joliet a suburb of Chicago". Joliet is about 45 miles from downtown Chicago.

The Holiday Inn convention site is located directly off of I-80 in a suburban
clean and safe area. On the main roads surrounding the Holiday Inn are every
conceivable nationally known store/restaurant you can imagine (Walmart,
Office Max, Wendy's, Target etc.). "Like anyplace USA", as Chris Kennison said.

There are also some good, reasonably priced locally owned restaurants within easy driving distance of the hotel. Many attendees carpool to these restaurants for lunch and dinner. Off the main road are some nice residential neighborhoods.

All of the rooms in the Holiday Inn have been recently remodeled with new furniture and fixtures (Summer 2004). Even before this refurbishment project, the hotel was always maintained in an excellent clean condition. The comfortable chairs, sofas,
tables etc. add to the enjoyment of the convention and the nightly jam sessions.

One of the nice things about the HSGA Joliet convention is the fact that all of the out of town attendees stay at the Holiday Inn and 99% of your time will be spent there. You will make many new friends and have a great time.

The four days will fly by way too quickly.

I have driven through the cities Joliet, Ill and Gary. Indiana. at least 11 times years ago going out west and I don't see how anyone can even Breathe there, especially Gary.

But outside of town as mentioned where the Hotel is probably allright.
I would like to attend this show and wish I could. I remember Alvino Rey was there Quite a few times over the years....al

All I can say is... when I was a kid I'd play Microsoft Flight Simulator on the computer and the default take off spot was Meigs Field. My routine was to fly over to O'Hare International in a Cessna 182.

So it'll be neat to see these places in person.

You know, come to think of it, I haven't played that computer game for about a decade now. I bet the new version is so detailed you can see Wally's house from 1000'.

Jeff, I wouldn't recommend landing at Meigs Field under any circumstances other than a simulation.

But enjoy the sights nonetheless ...

I wish to clarify my love for the Joliet area and my previous comments about the population-its fact that my home community is equally enriched and I have been shown that the wealth code is nearly same Russ and Gerald are right on-You cannot land at Meigs and you will likely not leave the convention hotel much-Chuck-you are right about the "Blues Brothers" and JOLIET Jake-His brother "ELWOOD" is named after the small town south of Joliet on RT 53 (part of old US RT 66) by the raceway

Opps! I'd better add this ADDENDUM:

We have steel players in N.Y.C. What a pleasant surprize!

Of course, everyone knows that steel players are model, civic-minded citizens, no matter where they live.

And, thanks to Rudy, N.Y is getting better!

How many people attend HSGA Joliet?

I tend to agree with Chris Kennison, about 150, many of them musicians/performers.

This turnout is one of the main reasons I attend the convention. You can easily sit two feet away from a world-class steel guitarist, watch their hands, see how they approach the instrument and PLAY MUSIC WITH THEM!

My steel guitar playing improves tremendously as a result of the Joliet weekend. I always come away with fresh ideas and a handful of new tunes.

NYC is fine just the way it is. That's what happens when you live in a city that everyone in the world wants to come to (and most do come here). And there's a reason they all want to come here--because it's the greatest damn city in the world.

Thanks for the heads up on Meigs field, guys. Sounds like the place is similar to what happens when I try a new, unrehearsed instrumental with my band: A huge crash-landing.

When the right honorable Mayor Richard Daley of the city sent in the bulldozers to demolish the airstrip (Meigs) there was outcry from some pilots and commuters in the community-and rightly so from their viewpoint-but the area now is supposedly going to allow anglers some nice Lake Michigan shoreline fishing access several friends have said the smallmouth bass action right now is great
