Lots of posts about Joaquin's guitars, tunings and technique, but what about his amps? Specifically, in the Spade Cooley days. His guitar has such a dark, horn-like quality on those recordings. Was it an old Gibson amp, an early Fender perhaps? |

He used a Standel once they became available, as did lot's of the guitar greats of the time, especially on the left coast. |

Dickerson, Magnatone, Fender, Standel and for the last 5 years of his life he used a Peavey Session 400. He was NEVER satisfied with his guitars, amps or his sound in general and was constantly bitching about it. |

On the 40's recordings it wasn't a Standel, the first batch of amps were made between 53-56 and Joaquin didn't order any of those. He did get one of the later models with knobs on the front, and that's probably what he was using when he rejoined Cooley. |

I guess all together I spentabout a yr or so subbing in Spades bands and the only amp I remember was a little Gibson. I didn't pay much attention to his amps so I am no authority. I was fully taken back by his playing so I did not absorb much else. I remember the first time I observed him was about a week before my first sub, he had two little 6 str blonde nationals, one tuned to A7,E C# A G E C#, and I can't remember what the other one was tuned to.He used to get his 6th sound by Bring his bar down on the G str lowering it to F#. He would do a split stg slant with the bullit end divided on the E and C# and the midd part of the bar on the A strg making it G#. This put him in C# minor and give him a 3 stg minor on his A7 tuning. I Asked him how it did it especially on extended passages and he said "lots of vibato".

CC, thanks for the tips on Murphey's slants. That one sure seems like it would be out of tune, but he made it work. Do you remember if Joaquin did any string pulling behind the bar? He plays a 13th chord on the high strings that sure sounds like a string pull. I had a feeling it might have been a Gibson amp. Michael, i'll stop in on Thursday after my gig.[This message was edited by Dan Sawyer on 06 October 2004 at 11:25 AM.] |

Dan, if he did use strg pulls I didn't see him do it and at the time I had never heard of them. Listening to his older stuff now it could be possible that he did. The slant that most of us in A6 or 7 use now was one of the first I saw him do. Well I guess C6 also but on different strgs is the progression from the one chord to the 2 Lets say C to D. Instead of going up two frets to the d, he would split strg C# and A strgs and the lower part of the bar would flat the midd E stg and get a d chord at the 3rd fret. Sort of Jazzy sounding. Of course there are other chords that can be obtained with this slant. However to a 13 or 14 yr old this was the cats meow instead of old hat like it is now. On pedals you can throw in your Eb lever and not slant. Its more fun to slant though. CC |

CC, i just tried it. That's a very usefull slant. It sounded better only playing strings 1, 2 and 4. The 2nd string was still a little flat. I found that doing a very slight pull on that string makes it in tune. Thanks! |

One of the "Club of Spade" LPs sports a photo of Murph and Johnny Wiess sharing an large Epiphone amp. I saw an amp just like that one at a used music gear shop a few years ago. It was just a store decoration, not working and the cabinet was delaminating at the base. I looked in the back of it and some previous owner had added his initials in the back - "JM". Who knows ? |

On the forties Spade movies,he has an Epiphone Electar. Dick Allan said, later he saw Jouquin and, johnny with Gibson GA75s. Jouquin, when i asked him about amps,ie mid 50s, he told me thet Fender always had the latest models on stage for them at the Riverside Rancho. The amp Jussi, is refering to is a 50L15. By the way Dave that JM Epiphone amp, you saw, is over at Jeremy Wakefeilds. After close inspection im convinced it was custom biult for the actor James Mason. Lee |

I've got one just like this Epiphone amp--best I've ever heard. I also want to add that I think a player will sound like himself no matter what amp (or even guitar) he uses. ------------------ www.mikeneer.com [This message was edited by Mike Neer on 16 October 2004 at 07:05 AM.] |
