Jeff Ah Hoy is Gosh-darn Phenomenal ... I'd say he's in the class of Iona, Nichols, McIntire and Kelii ... But I don't know if them guys could play bass, uke, rhythm guitar ... and sing (falsetto) like an angel ... Just down right "freakish" Such a magical experience ... a Hula Monster ... enchanted botanicals ... a legendary A25 ... and asthma producing laughter Thanks to all ... it was a blast. Gotta get some sleep now ... been awake since 8 am Sat ... just got home ... And Howard, please brush those teeth ... BOTH SETS ... right Harry D. ------------------ My wife and I don't think alike. "enchanted botanicals" lmaoThat's all great news. It's good to hear that Jeff's all that and more. Give me a reason to get back to HI again soon (like I really need another reason). So....someone's got to ask the tough questions...how does my "6-string-no-tone-control Dustpan" sound? Anybody? Like I ever doubted how good it would sound. ------------------ www.mikeneer.com |

Rick's not kidding about Jeff. What a talent! He really does it all, very well. Better than very well, and he is humble. He truly amazed everyone. Great guy. Rick, I woke up at 11am, hurting real bad. I can't imagine how you got through this day. There was so much great music. The jams at night that lasted into the morning hours produced some great stretching out. Yep, a blast. Still can't get over Jeff. I'm gonna' get to work on some photos, but I'm fading too. And Harry, that steak turned out fine! |

I knew you guy's were in for a great convention this year, kind of like a perfect storm for steel afficianado's. Glad to hear it was such a success and that Jeff got to show everybody (especially those that may have had doubts about him) what a nice guy he is as well as a multi/seasoned talent. I hope it all transfers to this year's April/Honolulu show! |

Mike:Your guitar sounds fantastic. Rick did a great job on these. You're going to love it! We did a little "face-off" with Dick McIntire's long neck frypan (I'm not kidding!) and the Dustpan. For amps, we had two Roland MicroCubes with all controls at the same setting, with both guitars' volumes wide open. Rick Aiello played the Dustpan, and I had the honor of using McIntire's frypan. At some point, I ended up with both guitars on my lap to do the test so the picking attack would be more consistent. The Dustpan more than held its own against McIntire's frypan. The tones were extremely similar. Some felt the frypan had a slightly warmer tone. The Dustpan had more volume. Both guitars sustained like mad. -Bill |

The Rick Face Off... (l-r) Bill Leff (McIntire Guitar), Rick Aiello (Dustpan) Yes folks, Dick McIntire's frypan was at Joliet this year! It's currently owned by Hal Smith of Vancouver BC, Canada. Hal is a regular at the convention along with his lovely and talented hula dancer wife Aina. Hal has written documentation that the guitar did once belong to McIntire. All of the elder scholars of the HSGA back him up on this one as well. Hal let anyone who wanted to, play the guitar. Everyone was hoping that the magic mojo would rub off on them. The guitar sounded great, but guess what? When I played it I sounded like Gerald Ross playing Dick McIntire's guitar. ------------------ Gerald Ross 'Northwest Ann Arbor, Michigan's King Of The Hawaiian Steel Guitar' Gerald's Fingerstyle Guitar Website

How exciting is that? I wish I could compared them myself. Rick, the Dustpan looks magnificent in the lap. Maybe I'll bring her 'round next year to let you see how we're getting along.BTW--nobody should own that Dick McIntire guitar. That thing should be in a museum. I don't normally feel that way about instruments, but I do in this case. But in the meantime, I jealous as hell of Hal. But hey, I've got that smokin' Dustpan. I'll do you proud, Rick. |

Look at those 2 mad scientists! Couldn't think of a better collaboration than that. It's like having 2 doctors in the house during an emergency.Rick told me about this emergency surgery, and that early on it was the highlight of the trip. I have an early Frypan like that (with the early ground configuration--no ground wire) and I've had the same problem with mine. Works fine for now, though. Oh, and BTW--I purchased this little piece of Dick McIntire history the other day, and I'll be sure to scan it for all to see. HSGA was outstanding. Rick, Howard, Dave, Jeff, John, Stephen - glad to meet you 'kids' for the first time! Great jams, and magic music everywhere. Rick your 'dustpans' are very cool, congratulations. I don't know how I did it but drove non-stop from Joliet to Colorado on Sun. - guess I was used the sleep deprivation after the late jams. The hangover wore off somewhere around Omaha. Gonna veg. out to a movie tonite to decompress and get in the spirit of the season - think I'll rent Halloween! cheers - chris

Hal is a super guy, and he has a lovely wife. That guitar has been in his possession for many years....did he bring along his ancient tube amp also ? Hal,and also Jack Montgomery (both Canadians! ) have come about the closest to capturing the beautiful tone of Dick McIntire...(note: I used the word "CLOSEST" ... nobody has done it yet of whom I am aware.) Also, it is interesting to note that, like many steel guitarists of today, Dick McIntire used a number of guitars during his great career. I recall Dirk Vogel also owned a Ric frypan back around 1989 which was formerly owned and played by Dick. I'd be very surprised he didn't still have it tucked away somewhere! |

I had the honor of "hangin' out" with Jack Montgomery and Bobby Ingano for about an hour in Jacks room ...Listenin' to a compilation of '20s and '30s steelers and hearing stories of Night Marcher's, Pele and other fascinating stuff. I also moved as close to the stage as possible when Jack M. played a couple of tunes ... I spent zillions of hours "studying" his performance at the 1988 HSGA convention (video) ... Again ... just an amazing experience ... PS: Chris K. ... [This message was edited by Rick Aiello on 18 October 2004 at 04:08 PM.] |

Aside from Jeff amazing everyone with his talent, Dave Giegrich, of The Hula Monsters was a monster player.Dave played a lot of 7 string G6 dobro that just blew everyone away. At the jams, you name it, he played it...fantastically. The last tune in his set was "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" on 6 string Dobro. It was jaw dropping. |

Here's Dave Giegerich. We used to work together at Elderly Instruments in the late 70's. We played in a Bluegrass band - The Dutch Elm Boys. The last time I saw Dave was in 1978 before he moved to the Washington DC area. Joliet was a 26 year reunion for us. I called my wife on the cell phone from the Friday night jam and had her listen to him play. She said "he's gotten a lot better" He was amazing at 25. He's awesome now! Dave Giegerich, Dobro. That's LT Zinn (his head isn't showing) in the picture. Great guy, super player, and very, very funny! I gotta say, this year's Joliet convention was the best of the three I've attended, and all of them have been great (why else would I leave the Monterey Bay for Joliet,IL?). It was great to put faces to the names I've seen on this forum over the years, and to hang out, talk story, tell jokes, and make great music. To each and every one of you, big mahalo for taking the time and energy to make it such a memorable experience. -Bill |

Howard ... please ... I just got my asthma back under control. Donald, Andy Volk did a wonderful job on my logo ... which serves as the 12th fret marker. He had it all set ... and then when I saw how cool the paua abalone fret marker/knob sets turned out ... he re-did it to match. |

I'm still beaming after last weeks convention. The older veterans of the HSGA were wonderful to me, but what really made the convention was being able to hang out with the young guns... Rick Aiello, Chris Kennison, HowardR, Gerald Ross, Bill Leff, Doug Smith, Barbara Kuhns, Floyd Alexander, and HulaMonster Dave Giegerich (I'll second Howard's comments above... Dave's playing simply blew me away). I'll be telling the folks back home about you all for a while. I feel like Dorothy just back from Oz... "...and Rick was there, and Bill was there, and Gerald was there, and Howard..." You guys are the best! And you forever changed the way I look at older women who approach me after a performance. |

I just got back from visiting family in Michigan after the convention. Thanks for all the encouraging words. What a treat to see all the great players there. Jeff Au Hoy and Bobby Ingano are both fantastic musicians who really have the touch. It was a real pleasure to see their sets and catch them up close at the after hours jam sessions. Jeff played any request yelled out from the audience and was as polite as he was knowledgeable, and I never saw Bobby when he didn't have a huge smile on his face. Rick's Dustpans blew everyone away. It's great to see something like that happen for someone like Rick who is truly doing this as a labor of love, not a pursuit of $$. Gerald Ross was a fine guitarist when we last played in 1978 and has just gotten better. He played back up for a lot of the sets and jams and also played some great steel guitar as well as helping out us first timers. LT Zinn was his usual funny and talented self. And HowardR was as funny there as he is here. All the "kids" were fun to hang out with and hear. There really was a feeling of meeting kindred spirits. Lots of the older folks came up and said to me, "It's nice to have young people here" and I replied, "It's nice to be called young". I had not heard the Roland Cube before. They sounded so good I stopped at Elderly and bought one on the way home. Nice to meet everybody and hope to do it again. Dave |
