To those of you who have not had the occasion to hear Jerry’s album HI FI Guitar now is your chance. Even those of you who have worn out your album or tape it now will be available in CD format. Jerry was disappointed in the sound of the album and its excessive treble so he recently had the opportunity to have it re-mastered and took the treble down a notch. He was very fortunate to find through one of his life long fans a copy of the album that was never opened or played (he had four of them I think) to use to re-master the sound to the tone as originally recorded but mixed down to some other tone he was not satisfied with. Now he is and I think all of you will be also. All 13 tunes were recorded in the summer of 1957 on his Rickenbacker 7 string Bakelite steel guitar. It is thought by many in the industry to be his best album of the 30 he has recorded. For those who have never heard the album the tunes on it are:

Paradise WaltzParadise Waltz is proclaimed by Jerry as his best demonstration of harmonics. The CD has been re-titled HI-FI Steel Guitar. It will be available from Scotty’s Music very soon. I am listening to a pre-release copy as I write this. You won’t be disappointed. I don’t know how much it will sell for but keep a watch out on Scotty’s website www.scottysmusic.com for it. I believe that will probably be the only place you can purchase it Another project that will happen in the future I can mention for all of his fans. Mike Cord of Cord International has obtained the rights to the six Monument albums Jerry recorded. He plans to reduce the tunes on the six albums down to a two CD package and Jerry will pick the songs that will be on the CD’s. Another chance for those who haven’t got these albums or want to upgrade to a CD. More on that when it is closer to happening.

That's great news, Jack! I think this will introduce Jerry Byrd's music to a whole new audience.

That's my most favorite Jerry Byrd album. My old LP is about wore out, so this comes in the nick of time. It's a good thing the lifelong fan had the foresite to keep a copy in mint condition. Thanks Jack! ------------------

Can't wait for "Hi Fi Guitar" to come out on CD -- I'll be watching Scotty's like a vulture! Same with the upcoming Monument CD. This news is truly "music to my ears."  |

Nice to have this recording, but such a historic recording made by such a historical player deserves to be remastered from as close to the original source as possible and that would surely not be from a record! Record pressings are subject to all sorts of quality control which affect the sound and tone. A pressing done earlier in the run will sound remarkably different than a pressing done when the master stamping die is about worn out and fixing to be changed out. Did anyone do any research as to where the original analog tape master is? Was it availiable? What kind of condition is it in? Just to take a vinyl record, play it into a computer and cut the top end off sounds very sonically suspect to me. If the master has been destroyed or lost then this may indeed be the only way to reissue this. Just wondering. |
