I got so many nice emails from folks after posting JB's Kimo Hula/Kolopa ...That I thought y'all might like to hear the other tune he played on that cassette ... From that early Hoolaulea ... Malaguena  ------------------

Here ya go ...Kolopa Shoot-out ... scroll down .... JB offers ... Malaguena ... as one of his "Pro-Arrangments" . It's one of the more expensive ones ... like $5 ... ha, ha It is 8 pages long in E9th tunin'... (lo to hi) E G# D E F# G# B E ... and I gave up after page 2. Rick, thanks sooo much for posting this! I didn't even know anything like this was out there!!!!I pull that arrangement out every once in awhile, but it's a bit advanced for me so I end up putting it back in the binder until I get brave enough to pull it out again (like my Diatonic tabs)! I do much, much better with tab if I can hear it first! What a rare gem to have, since Jerry never recorded this in a studio (that I know of). I wish I could have seen him play a live show, but he officially retired about a year before I took my first trip to Hawaii. But I did get to meet him which was one of the highlights of my trip! Totally awesome sound clip!!!! |

Rick-Thanks for the link. I never heard Jerry Byrd do that one.
I remember in the late 30's, we Hawaiian Guitar players played LaGolondria, Estrallita, and Malaguena, but never could touch His Genius. He is one of a kind......al ------------------

Holy smokes! Rick, can you tell me where this tape (or even better, a CD) may be purchased. I stand by what I said in your earlier post of one of Byrd's tunes. A set of picks and steel bar are weapons in the hands of JB. He can absolutely rip yer heart out with them. Beats all "I ever heeeerd!" oj hicks |

OJ ... That was from a casstette I bought from Tom Bradshaw ... back in the 80's ... I think it was some kinda "Steel Guitar Club" offerring ... One of the first JB Hoolauleas. Those two songs (Kimo Hula/Kolopa and Mal.) are the only ones JB played ... on that tape. I do remember it had Freddy Tavares and a slew of other famous Hawaiian players on it. The cassette is somewhere around here ... I lost a whole box of tapes "somewhere" when we moved off the mountain ... I made a compilation of various tapes and put those two on it ... luckily. I'll find it eventually ... until then, maybe Mr. Bradshaw still has it ... ??? ------------------

I would think all his 'Pro-Arrangements" are still avaliable ... through JB himself.If you send him a big, self addressed stamped envelope ... he'll send you his list ... over 200 songs. I believe he asks for a minimum order of 10 songs ... and at $2.50 to $5 ... Ya can't beat that with a stick ...  They usta be up on Scottys site ... but I can't find them now.

By the way, these arrangements are top notch professional arrangements. As Jerry says in the catalog, "They require a high degree of playing ability but should be highly educational to the player." They aren't beginner's arrangements...some of them are even note for note as he recorded them!! It's great to have full pro-arrangements...lush chords, plenty of slants...the works! Most all can be done on a six string guitar. Very few require all 8 strings. There's nothing else out there like it! |

Talked to Jerry last evening. He said the recording that Rick put up on the forum of Malaguena was the only recoding of him playing the tune to his knowledge. He said it probably is more correct in calling it variations on Malaguena. He was going to play it at the Hoolaulea the year before but the situation was not right in the room. To much noise of something like that. He just felt he could not play it the way he wanted to at that time so he cut it out of his preformance and things were much better the year he did play it. He thinks maybe Scotty recorded it but was not sure just who did.His health remains pretty stable, minor ups and downs but he is hanging in their for now. |
