I'm thinking of going to Steve Kaufmann's dobro camp this spring for some intensive instruction/jamming. I'm an old fart and don't have time to slide with others since I play bass and guitar in my church band. Do you think that the dobro lessons will transfer to my lap steel playing? Anyone have experience with Steve's camp?- Thanks Jeff S |

I don't know anything about Steve Kaufmann's dobro camp, but it is likely that Bobby Ingano will be teaching a steel guitar class at the Augusta Heritage Center in Elkins, West Virginia, July 10-15 this year. A week with Bobby could do something for your playing and attitude! |

I have a friend who just started playing steel who has been playing steel for years and when he plays his steel it sounds like he is still playing his dobro. Ouch! Get my point? Don |

That's a very valid point and very easy to fall into that trap. Quite different technique and styles of playing, especially if you're working with G tuning on dobro. Most steel tunings are everything but G tuning.I think it works better when a steel player transfers steel technique to dobro as opposed to the other way around. |

Trying to pick a fight, eh? As a (primarily) bluegrass dobro guy who also occasionally plays the Fender Custom and MSA thing with peddles I can tell you that we can spot a converted steel player a mile off.. Way too quiet with innappropriate pick blocking on everything.... "Dude, pick harder...NO..HARDER" Yes..I confess to have the opposite problem. It takes me about 20 minutes at steel and I realize that I sound like poo and I must back way off and block more... On one of Mike Auldridge's albums, he plays a dobro duet with Lloyd Green..."Lloyd's of Nashville"That is some of the most soulful playing of these styles and still sends chills through my bones just thinking about this piece. |

Bobby Ingano's class sounds great but it's 1000mi. from South Fla. Anyone know of anything closer. You can only learn so much from DVD's, they don't point out your mistakes. Thanks-Jeff S |

Jeff, have I got the perfect deal for you- Jim Heffernan will be giving a two-day intensive dobro seminar here at my studio on June 4 & 5. He's a monstrous player and a truly gifted teacher. I guarantee you'll learn enough to keep you busy for years. Check with him at jheff@mcihispeed.net for details.------------------ Stop by the Steel Store at: www.markvanallen.com
