Ditto

It's a perfect match and a rare/golden opportunity.

Please keep us up on any progress, and how else we can assist.

Had a chance to speak with Keaumiki Akui today, he has long been a/the main associate/DJ/cultural affairs coordinater for KCCN and GM Mike Kelly, and is now heavy with KNNE. He sez Kelly is the driving force behind the new station (truly, a shock to me) and that they have major plans for the future. I know with Sam AND him involved it will be real good.

Akui is also a member of The Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) and a Hawaiian cultural aspect will become part of programing. This particular aspect can be another opportunity to infuse the steel into the focus of discussion.

He has been working with Milton Lau for upcoming slack key concerts/promotions and this is exactly where the steel interests need to jump in and get our piece of the pie that's now up for grabs. One problem he mentioned was the Musician's Union and the costs/hassles involved, having had discussions with Alan Akaka recently. When I mentioned an end run around that with the possible likes of non unioner's Jeff Au Hoy, Derrick Mau, Bobby Ingano, etc., he was staggered. (steel scabs to the rescue, eh guys?) I know Bobby was interested in getting back to him asap and I don't doubt others will as well once they know someone 'fo real' is interested in promoting the steel.

It was a good discussion and things are looking bright(er) for the steel and Hawaiian music/affairs.

He stated the thing he wants is input and support, so let's take that cue and strike while the irons hot!

The HSGA convention is coming up, sounds like perfect timing...

Thank you Ron. Good work! Email me and we can talk about the HSGA's possible role in this.

Keaumiki mentioned 'streaming' the audio was something they're hoping for soon. That alone will be a big score.

Sometimes it pays to search the old threads. I found this station IS streaming audio, it sounds at least at good as AM radio on my computer...

Craig,

Thanks for you efforts in resurrecting this thread. I had been thinking about this matter lately as well, but had not gotten around to any action.

When I was visiting Hawaii about a year and half ago, I continually had AM-940 on. It had a lot of steel guitar on with traditional Hawaiian music. I have now tuned to the station but as yet cannot fully evaluate it

In addition to AM 940 KKNE-AMwhich I have also listed there are other stations playing Hawaiian music listed below:

KCCN-FM

KINE-FM

KRTR-AM

Those checking this thread out can take a listen and see what you think.

Aloha,
Don

After listening more, I am finding that AM 940, KKNE-AM is Hawaiian music plus other things, e.g. local sports, etc.

Previously it was all Hawaiian music.

I guess you can say the AM-940 gives us also a variety of other features.

Aloha,
Don

You know, the wife and I were taking a long-overdue vacation to the islands a couple of years ago. I was anxious to hear some of that beautiful steel guitar I grew up listening to on "Hawaii Calls". There was only ONE place on Waikiki that was even playing Hawaiian music - and that was an occasional Hawaiian steel number mixed in with mostly popular music. I requested "Beyond the Reef" and the band did make an attempt, but it was obvious that was not one of their rehearsed numbers. Entertainment, on the whole, on the island was excellent, but certainly not the Hawaiian music I was hoping to hear. I would think there are enough old fogies like me *finally* getting to hawaii so that some place would be playing that Sol Hoopi sound. Maybe that radio station could uplink to satellite? - or even the internet?

Gil, it's just another example of bonehead bottom line mgt. that have no clue of what sells. Plus it's usually the food and beverage mgt. that handles the entertainment, and they come and go like a revolving door with each one pressured to the point that they try too hard to improve things that they always make it worse.
As an example, I recently went to the Halekulani (after a long and purposeful absence) which historically has had steel fronted groups, participated in Steel Guitar Week (no longer), and generally been a decent place to enjoy good steel music. But mgt. has steadily reduced it to a sad joke of it's former self, and I don't plan on returning, even tho there are some fine players on stage. The Sheraton Moana, the other regular steel haunt is much the same.

If there were musicians that played the great old styles from the 30/40/50/60s that had soulful/swinging kick ass musicians and the hotels hired and promoted them, there would be packed crowds every night. But they stupidly killed all that and getting it back is just a dream.

I hope one day a "Greatest Hawaiian steel songs as played by all the icons" comes out in score format with tab/notation and an audio CD of the actual artists. At least an hour and ahalf worth of tunes. I think Jeff Au Hoy might be the one who could do this right since he record copies so well and plays all the instruments needed for such a project. The back of the book could also have a section on gear and how to market such a gig. There could also be chord charts and basic scales and arpeggios in the back as well. I know some teachers think this would make things too easy for the student, but that's the whole point. I know of no true Hawaiian steel teachers out here and the cost for me to get all this info and the time to try and figure it out has made it a long slow process for me. A book like this with the audio would have gotten me where I want to be in a much shorter time frame. The end result would be more younger people playing out in front of the public and hipping more of the public to this beutiful genre.

A radio station that played nothing but the coolest Hawaiian tunes with no commercals would be so great to see on the internet. Something that worked for people with dial up.

In another post Jeff Au Hoy says that he has finally seen the light on tabs and thinks there is a place for them, so may be there is hope Jesse.

He is probably one of the few that could bring the old Hawaiian songs to life because he probably knows them and has the ear for it. Many of the songs are not found in sheet music.

Aloha,
Don
