I noticed they use string gauges 9 -42 that seems wimpy to me. and I wonder if a strat pickup would be juicy enough. otherwise it is nice looking. |

That's not bad looking at all.The nice thing about a Strat pickup would be the options available for replacement. There are gazillions of drop in replacements. |

Not bad, it looks like a direct knock-off of the old K&F steel that predated the Fender, right? Is it made in Japan, Mexico, or China? ------------------ Herb's Steel Guitar Pages Texas Steel Guitar Association

These Fender laps retail at $571.42. I just checked with a dealer friend of mine, he said he couldn't understand the price(42 cents???). Anyway, looks to have a Mexican Strat PU, & comes with a case. |

That's a great version of an old favorite. I think the .009-.042 string set is intended for C6/Am7 tuning, and should sound just fine. All I can say is - where's MINE!?!?------------------ Brad's Page of Steel A web site devoted to acoustic & electric lap steel guitars |

The Fender lap steel that they had on display at the recent NAMM show was quite different than the one shown here. The only similarity that I can see is in the tuning pegs - like the old K & F design. Otherwise it had paralell sides (front and back) It had a very clean, modern look. The finish was a classy, white sheen. |

Terry- I think the 0.42 is a cute reference to "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", by Douglas Adams. That could be a pop song "...42 is the funniest number", was that 3 Dog nite? |

I wonder if they are planning more models. If you go to Fenders website you will see that it says "lap steels", and when you click on it you come to a site with a small photo of this model and plenty of space for more photos. So one can always hope... Steinar ------------------ www.gregertsen.com

I will surely be getting one, if not just to vote with my back pocket and support the return of the Fender steel guitar. A fair price, too. I take it the "street price" will be a little less that $400? Alot cheaper than those $1200 Japanese Deluxe 6 and 8's nobody seemed to jump for.A shame it doesn't have a true string through pickup, though. I geuss with a strat pickup it will sound alot like a Champ model (not my favorite Fender steel tone, but respectable). I sure hope the knob on the treble string side is for tone (as I do alot of wah wah stuff). I believe all the Mexican made reissues (AKA the "Classic Series") come with .009p to .042w, so that's probably what that's all about. Who keeps stock strings on a new guitar anyways? HOORAY! THE RETURN OF THE FENDER STEEL GUITAR!!! Bob Kagy, The original K&F steels had chrome fretboards. I'm sure stagelights made for the quick change over to black and grey. (editted to keep from moaning about an eight string double neck guitar) [This message was edited by Chris Scruggs on 24 February 2005 at 09:34 PM.] [This message was edited by Chris Scruggs on 24 February 2005 at 09:36 PM.]

Nice looking "Art Deco" panash from the past....Good to see Fender is forward looking into a Steelguitar market again.....Steelking Amp, now a lap steel!!! What's next.....You gotta crawl first, then walk, run fast & then you can steel....now after that, go eat pizza (pepperoni, puleeeze)... Sam, thanks for the steel bars up ("Heads up")... It sure is cool to look at. . .but, (and please forgive my nay-sayerness, what do I really know as I'm pretty new to steel playing), . .it just seems to me that the volume knob,(I assume that's the one closest to the player, not ever having played this model or the earlier version), and the pickup cover would kinda get in the way of some right hand muting techniques. If it's a reissue I say bully-bully. But if fender is trying to make a better mouse trap . . . am I wrong? |

Well, I've decided to order an FS52. Tomorrow I'll call Scott, my friendly neighborhood GC Pro guy, and place the order (Guitar Center is conveniently located 2 blocks from my house). I just got a Fender Steel King Amp and I absolutely love it - so much that I ordered a second one, so I might as well get an FS52 as well. How else am I going to be qualified to write an article about it for the JCFSC newsletter? I played through the FSK at a live show earlier this evening - and it sounded AMAZING!! I can't wait to hear what 2 of them in stereo will sound like . .
Since I've been talking up Steel Guitar at the local Guitar Center, they've suggested that I do a demonstration there. So when it comes in, I think I'll do just that. I'll demo the FS52, the FSK, and just for the added excitement - my 57 Stringmaster T8 ! Should be fun! Rick Alexander Big Steel

Well, I was informed by my friendly neighborhood GC Pro guy that 100 FS52s were coming into the country, but they had all been sold - and 50 more were on the way, but they were also sold. He said it would be late May or early June before I could get one. I told him to go ahead and order one for me anyway . .It's the American way.[This message was edited by Rick Alexander on 08 March 2005 at 06:08 AM.] |

Two things:Why don't they make the tuners 'stick up' instead of pointing out to the side, I'd think tuning would be a lot easier if they were upward. Are they making an 8-string in the same model? Thanks, Leila |
