I've been listenin' to my JB records alot lately ...

I came across one that may have "Gone under your Radar" ... cause it's from a uke compilation that he was asked to play on around 1994-5 ...

Its an un-accompanied version of Kaua'i Beauty

You don't hear this kinda playin' every day ... a Tour de Force in reverse slanting in his E9 tunin' ...

I hope he doesn't mind me "sharing" this ...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ...

Thats off Ukulele Stylings Vol 1 ...

He's on 3 songs ... plus the solo.

The story of the "Acapella Byrd" ..

He was noodlin' around during the session ... the engineer caught it ...

Apparently someone at the sessions was related to Henry Waiau... wrote Kaua'i Beauty ... and was so "touched" by JB's version ... they put it on the finished CD..

Thats what I heard anyway ...

Wow! Thanks, Rick! I closed my eyes while listening and got lost in the ecstacy of the music. This is probably the most beautiful steel solo I've ever heard. I love acapella...I could listen to this kind of stuff all day and night!

Very appropriately timed Rick.
Thank you very much!
The Maestro and my hero from Day 1.
I would not be playing today if it were not for Jerry.
He will always be with us.

Mahalo for posting Kaua'i Beauty. It certainly lives up to its name. It is also on Island Breeze II by Katsuko Okada "featuring Jerry Byrd on steel guitar". I tend to chuckle when I hear it now, remembering that the first time I heard it I instinctively reached for the J-card to see who the second steel guitarist on the album was. During the instrumental intro while the upper line was ascending, the lower line was descending, but no one was listed. It was a puzzlement since I couldn't imagine anyone moving a piece of metal in two opposite directions at the same time. Unless.........it was in a pivotal direction. By golly it worked, who'd a thunk it. Seriously though, it's hard to imagine how many thousands of us have been inspired by his work.

Nice use of that signature David Keli'i vamp, sliding past and then back-peddling to the V7 chord.

I have that one, too. It's a beauty. Who needs pedals?

It just doesn't get any better than that, and I doubt that it ever will.

Before this "special day ends" ...

What JB always wanted (from me anyway) ... was for me to write my own arrangements using standard music.

I wasn't very good at it ...

I never had the sheet music for this one ... so it was just by ear.

But here is "my version" ... not trying to transcribe what you just heard.

Its not "real tab" ... the staff lines are merely to group the notes into blocks ... no "timing" (although I tried to imply alittle) ... just the notes and way I play them.

I use it to warm up ... so no chords ... someone can supply the "correct tab" with chords if they like ...

I think this is right:

Key of G ... E9 (lo to hi)

D E F# G# B E

The entire second section (single note) is done using palm harmonics.

Just tryin' to say thanks ... Happy Birthday
