For the last few weeks, I've been threatening to post some photos of some interesting steels.

Finally caught some down time on this misty cloudy NY gray day.....

First up....a GFI D10/8

Keyless. One neck 10, the other an 8 string standard fretboard ala Thumbs Carlisle

Jeff Strouse....you wanted keyless...keep your eye on this thread

Here's the Sierra S12 that myself & Bill will demo next week

This is a six string spacing on 12 strings. I can almost put two 6 string tunings on this one neck....

Wow! Beautiful axes Howard.
You must need a 6" bar to play the Sierra.

Rick, while the 6" spacing is what I'm most used to, it does present problems with grips. A long bar for 10 or 12 string is not comfortable for me either. For me it's best to use a bar for 8 strings and stay within that width range.

At some point I would like to put 2 six string tunings and play around with that. A great sounding steel. There were only two 12 strings made according to Tom Baker. I bought this at the Dallas show a few years ago just before Sierra closed.

A note to anyone who is thinking of, or buying one from Sierra.....get 4 legs. This is a little wobbly at the neck with 3.

The Last of the Custom Melobars

yep, this was one of the last that Ted did. I received it from him a year ago this past February. It was a few years in the making. I asked Ted to do this tear drop strat shape for me. I knew that he was going through some difficult times and that he had more "normal" steels to deliver. Anyhow I didn't "need" it right away and had other projects and things swimming around my mind, so time was not of the essence.

Howard. Great looking and interesting GFI. Please tell me a bit about the fretted neck and how it is set up and how you approach it. I have been wanting to build a lap with the same thing to be able to fret some with the left hand along with using the bar. Is this what you are doing?

Bill, I approach my steel from the back and then pull up the seat.....oooh, terrible joke.

The 10 string neck is a steel neck tuned to C6 and the 8 string fretted neck is tuned to G major. Gene Fields has a couple of double neck pedal steels with one neck set up this way. This was his non pedal but as he was using pedals, he had this for sale. The G tuning is what Gene had it tuned to, and myself being mostly a dobro player (I don't play standard guitar) find that I'm more comfortable with this than I would be with anything else. Yes, I'm playing the fretted neck with my fingers. The action is very low on this neck. I think that is what you were asking me.

Gene can certainly give you the details if you endeavor to build your own.

Bill, I'll be at the PSGA in November. If you decide to come up for that, I'll bring this steel with me.

Those pictures are great Howard. That Sierra looks like it should have landing lights.

If you need a 6" bar let me know...

It won't be the first one I have done.

The Melobar is sweet. I have a Red Ratt and it just sounds so clean.

We should get You and Rick Alexander together and have a Non-Pedal Show.

Gary, if you put me on stage, it will be a "no show".....

(I'll finish the newsletter story by tomorrow)

back to our regularly scheduled program.

I'm out now for the evening, but I have another doozy to post tomorrow.

That fretted neck seems to be one of Gene Field's "things".He played a tune on it at the Norwalk Ct.Steel Show in 2003.It was pretty interesting.Seems like it would be tricky to have it work with fingers and bar since the string height might be an issue.

Howard great pics.
Isaw Gene play his thumbs machine at ISGC, and he gota great sound from it.

That melobar looks VERY cool.

Yeah landing lights ...
and a twister bar double ender bar
would be great on the Sierra.

Howard. So you are playing it like Thumbs did! Cool. That blues kid Jeff Healy plays with the guitar lying flat in his lap also.

How low do you think the action could be on the fretted neck and still be able to use a lighter weight bar ala Shubb style, or even a bottleneck. Possible to do some slide AND some fretted playing with the right action height?

Also couldn't you incorporate some tapping style guitar like Stanley Jordan or some of the the rock players use. You tried that on it?

I am very intrigued by that neck.

Oh, man, that Sierra makes me drool. Six-string spacing on a twelve-string lap is exactly what I would do if I were building one for myself (well, I might make it a fourteen-string).

I'm just going to go off and faint, or something.

Bill, The action is very low on that neck and I believe that no matter how light the touch, the string would touch the fret. I could try it later but I never considered it. It would negate the purpose of the fretted neck, in my mind.

I always put in my disclaimer that I'm not a "real" player like most everyone here, lest someone think so. I'm a tinkerer. I don't know any tunes on this and have not seriously put serious practice time into this. I occassionally tinker to see how it works, what techniques may be involved, & how it sounds. I'll sit down to this for a couple of hours, sometimes get into a groove if I discover some neat licks and perhaps come back to it several months later, or longer.

The open G tuning gives me solid chord capabilities just by fretting 1 or 2, or more notes and nice thumb style ability. It even makes me sound somewhat.."good". This neck has a double set of pick ups next to each other. It really sounds full. Fuller than the steel neck.

Travis, I hope you have looooong fingers. I would opt for an 8 string spacing on my Sierra.

The Westwind T9

This was built by Roy Thomas of Pedalmaster Steel Guitars. It's built cabinetwise like a psg, but non pedal.

Howard,
The Westwood T9
I think you will find the credit for building
this beautiful instrument goes to Roy Thomas and not yours truly as stated in your post.
In the event I am wrong, would you please send my guitar back to me. I have been looking for it!

How about Leavitt tuning on the bottom 6 & D tuning on the top 6? Someone could go pretty far with that I would imagine.

Hey Crowbear,....meet me in Iceland, I'll bring it...

I forgot to mention that the Westwind has blend controls for the two pick ups that are on each neck.

Next time I visit Jody, this one's coming with me...

Howard, beautiful pictures.

The Sierra 12 - what kind of pickup did you and Tom put on it? I haven't seen one like that on a Sierra.

It's a good looking guitar and I'm envious; mine's only 8 strings.

Bob, I'm not sure about the pick up. This wasn't built for me.

I bought this at the 2002 Dallas Show. Tom wasn't at that show. There were two of these and by Sunday afternoon they were drastically reduced in price. I really wasn't in the market for a steel but as I was starting to leave, they guy (don't remember his name, wasn't Don Christiansen) lowered the price even more. At that point I knew that I would regret it if I left it behind.

I sure was right. I had no idea that the company was gonna close shortly thereafter.

Beautiful shots. Sadly, you aren't in any of them, which is always entertaining.

Reminds me of this classic.

Love to meet you someday!
