Whoever posted that for Guitar Center will be fired next week. Seriously, it's nice to see an auction from them with a reasonable starting bid. ------------------ Brad's Page of Steel A web site devoted to acoustic & electric lap steel guitars [This message was edited by Brad Bechtel on 21 October 2005 at 06:45 PM.]

Here's the email I just sent gcrep about the auctionItem: VINTAGE 1950's FENDER Dual 8 Professional Lap steel NR (7359417832) This message was sent while the listing was active. lonster1 is a potential buyer. Guitar Center GCREP usually lists lap steels at an opening bid 3-4 times the going rate. What's wrong with you? Are you trying to get fired? You better cancel the auction. You don't want to be the one to set a trend by actually listing an item for what it's true value is, DO YOU? ;-] Item Details Item name: VINTAGE 1950's FENDER Dual 8 Professional Lap steel NR Item number: 7359417832 End date: Oct-26-05 14:09:02 PDT |

Here's one....originally it was listed as a Stringmaster. I emailed & asked if he was sure that it was a Stringmaster. I did not receive a reply, but all of a sudden, the heading was changed....all in about two hours of my question."There's Something Rotten in Denmark".... sorry Steinar, it's that Shakespeare guy http://cgi.ebay.com/1954-Fender-Double-8-Steel_W0QQitemZ7358629758QQcategoryZ38082QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem |

I have seen and played that instrument, some of the parts are non-original and I think it's a refin. At least, if the Fender factory put it out like that it was on a really OFF day. |

Both of those steel guitars are worth a lot more than the starting auction price. Both are worth at least $1200. Of course, they are not clean enough for Mr. Clean; but they can be easily sanitized. Scotty (St.L) has one trap. pickup with tail plate for $250. Mr. Clean If you want to play it clean, you must play it on a Fender. |

No problem Howard, as a Norwegian I tend to agree........ (Besides, most Danes would agree too, and add that it's the Norskis who come down there and get all raving drunk that's the problem... ) Steinar ------------------ www.gregertsen.com |

Here's the reply.... quote: Howard, I can't be sure of what it is! still being researched- I've found nothing helpful in guides or on the net- If you find something- I'd love to know- thanks for looking!
How lame is this reply? It's like me saying that I don't know a fedora from a porkpie.
I like to see their research team.....on second thought, maybe not. Steinar, along with int. music theory, I should take geography.

Most people's idea of "research' is to look at pricing on items already sold on eBay. Why should GC be any different? Nothing anybody except the IRS can do about them overstating the value of unsold inventory for tax purposes. The bad thing about this is that almost anybody who posts a lap steel on ebay will start at unrealistic prices or ID the instrument wrongly or both. Several Forum members email me regularly for advice about steels and reso guitars on eBay. A LOT of stuff is not described or dated correctly. Some is deliberate and some is just plain dumb sellers. It will get worse.------------------

Just stay away from E-bay and buy from a reputable dealer. In the George C Scott movie, "The Flimflam man", George said "you can't cheat an honest man, because he he doesn't try to get somethin for nothing." |

Only if you don't know what you're doing. Knowledge of the item is a must. Intelligent research is a must. Then, you can be successful on ebay.

eBay is also a great resource for those of us who live far away from 'the source'. Not much to choose between here, most music stores don't know anything about lap steels and the only ones I've seen are Gretch Electromatis and cheap Chinese stuff. Steinar ------------------ www.gregertsen.com |

Here'a a reply I recieved from gcrep to my email posted earlier. I gues he liked my sense of humor. I'm not convinced he's got the BIG picture, but ... Sadly, I'm blowing this out pretty much at cost. When you see a GC auction that is way overpriced for the market, it's almost always due to a piece being bought in for too much by a sales person, thereby determining what it can be sold for. I know the company has a bad rap for that, but it's actually due to individual sales people giving too much for a trade-in in order to make a deal happen. With niche things like lap steels, very few people really know what to look for or how to accurately appraise them. I sell only through online auctions, so it's a problem I'm constantly fighting. We're making some headway, though. Selling used gear in the online market place is a different world from selling it in a storefront, and Guitar Center is still trying to get it integrated into their existing business structure. I'm one of only about 35 people in the whole chain who sell used and vintage gear online for GC. It's a new program, but it's continualy improving. One of the things we're working toward (and actually have the ability to do) is to only buy correct, straight vintage pieces and to pass on incorrect, issue gear. We want to be known for having the best quality vintage gear available. I'm a musician, songwriter, engineer, etc. and this is how I pay my bills. It's a really great gig (vintage gear? yes please!) but I'm not a company man, per se. I basically function as my own business within this store, which is nice, because I work in an office on my own and don't have to sell on the floor. I get a lot of nasty emails from ebayers who, I guess, assume these auctions are run by a computer, or some outsourced corporate lackey, who is ignorant of gear and the market, and simply marches to the GC battle drums. It's nice to get a candid email, so I hope you'll forgive the long-winded response. If there's anything I can get for you or help you find, new or used, please let me know!
