Does anyone know of any clips available - videos, DVDs or whatever - of The Newton Brothers, featuring Wayne Newton playing Steel? By all accounts he was amazing, so I'd sure like to see & hear for myself.

I don't know why he gave it up - he might have made it big if he'd stuck with it . .

Yeah, he could have made literally tens of dollars playing one of these things...

Here they are -

Looks like Bobby Vinton there with his arm around Wayne . .

But are there any clips in existence? That is the question.

I think Wayne ditched the hat and got an ear-job when he got to Las Vegas.

My Mom went to school with them. I'll have to send her this link, she'll get a huge kick out of it.

I posted something a long time ago looking for similar info, but had no luck. I know he was on the old Muskateer's show. I heard that he played steel guitar rag one one of the shows, and was peeking at the audience from under his guitar while playing. I'm sure if someone could find a library of the old Muskateer's show, there might be that episode (and more goodies) in there. He is quite a showman and I hope to see him perform one day. I've always been a big fan of his singing and stylings.

Hmmm . . now that you mention it . .

I wonder if Wayne ever plays a steel guitar anymore even just for fun.

Hi Guys,

I took lessons when Wayne and Jerry were around in Roanoke, VA. The teacher was Elmer Ridenhour who has since passed. I may be able to get in touch with Elmer's son Jimmy who operates the music store now.

Here is the Newton Brothers recording career from 1963 back to 1954 on a single CD:
http://www.bear-family.de/mailorder/showoneproduct.html?lang=de&p=BCD+16675

No video. Haven't heard it, so don't know about the steel content. You'd think a tune like "Out Arizona Way" would have steel. Considering Marty's affection for the steel, I'd guess he encouraged Wayne on the instrument.

Wayne played the Stardust in LV until recently. I was at the Stardust for two days last week. Steve Lawrence and Edie Gorme are playing in that theater now.

Wayne sometimes played the dark triple Fender at the Stardust show; but that was a while ago.

Hey Howard, go take a shower.

I understand Steve and Edie played at the Sands a long time. I never saw them there (maybe before my time). The Sands was imploded; and now the Venetian is built on that property.

Mr. Clean

If you want to play it clean, you must play it on a Fender.

I just found the Newton Bros CD at Amazon, where it's a little easier to order (1 click)
It's here.

Sure would like to see ol' Wayne play that thing, though.

(edited to say) I mean young Wayne . .

Elmer Ridenhiur (sp) told me many yrs ago that Wayne called him and wanted his tunings. About1989 Wayne was performing for a State Farm convention in Vegas and He confirmed this. I believe Elmer told me the tunings at that time were A6 E7 C#m. If memory is correct, Elmer was giving lessons in the town Wayne lived in at the time and Wayne was just a kid. I believe Elmer said he only gave him a couple of lessons or maybe none at all. He said Wayne was a phenom that could play anything he wanted to. I am writing this from an old mans memory which wasn't very good even when he was young; so feel to correct the above . CC

Not only that, I'll record it and name it "The Sands of A Time Gone Awry"....

CC: Your olde memory is doing fine. When I spoke with Elmer Ridenour, (which was many times), he often claimed credit to starting Wayne Newton on the steel guitar. Elmer was a fine gentleman who had that "southern charm". Sadly, he passed away a number of years ago but not before his family asked many of his friends to write their thoughts of tribute to him. Elmer felt highly honored to receive so many wonderful words.

Elmers ashes were spread "Beyond the Reef" By Jerry Byrd and other members HSGA. Not all though as he wanted his ashes to be a different places in HI. I heard that some were in Pokai Bay. CC

What a great thread this is turning out to be.
Only 2 things could make it any better.

1. Someone would know where to get a video of all the old shows where Wayne played Steel.

2. Jody would fix himself a cuppa strong java and spill the beans - not the java beans, the beans about the Newton Brothers!
BTW Jody, isn't that a Dual Pro in the pic with Marty & the boys?

Jody,

How about some short stories in a series. That should fly.

Don't disappoint us newbies , we are here to learn and gain an appreciation of the history of our love, the lap steel guitar and the fine persons associated with it.

Aloha,
Don

Jody, this is a thread about The Newton Brothers and Wayne Newton's steel playing.
If you tell your stories about that and stay on topic, nobody can take you to task for it.

It won't matter if it's long or short as long as we stick to the subject at hand . .

Hey Jody, why don't you write up what you know about Wayne Newton in a word document and email it to those of us who request it?

Did you also know his brother, Fig?
