I have not heard any recent recordings of this song which has always done something for me whenever I heard it played.
The thing I recall is that the Hawaiian players would curl the little finger around the volume control and "tug" the chords out.
I would be interested to know if they customized their steel guitars so that the
volume control was close to the right hand.
The Fender guitars for instance did not allow easy access to the volume control?
Yet a lot of players like and use Fender Guitars.
I played the song today on my C6th 10 string
tuning and must admit that I cheated with
a pedal included in this arrangement. http://freefilehosting.net/?id=qdv9la7c

Roy-I always felt that way about "Paradise Isle".
I used to play it every night on the job, way back on my supro 6 string.

Yes, we used the volume control with our little finger to get those swells.
Mine was in the right place, also the tone controls.

Where are they now on Pedal guitars? I had them on my Electra_harp in 1948 and on the guitar I built which is on my Website....al

Roy, I believe the recording of Paradise Isle by Jerry Byrd is played in the C#m tuning or C#m9th.

What tuning do you use for this?

Many thanks, Rick

The first time Jerry came to the Winchester convention we were all in the parking lot that evening and Jerry was playing everyones guitar. Changed guitars about every 3 songs. We all were amazed at how much better our guitars sounded. Scotty had a Panda I believe that he had for sale cheap as it was a pile of junk. Jerry played it and the music was beautiful. Someone said "How much Scotty?" Scotty said "Man its not for sale anymore". Jerry played Paradise Island on this guitar and others. Most of the time the guitars were in C6 and Jerry would run the c to c# and the A to G# and play the whole song on three strgs. So apparently Jerry preferred C#m to play this song even though he did not retune the bottom 3. I have a pic of Jerry playing this panda in the parking lot, bare footed, I can send a copy to any one who would care to post it. Jerry played this song on my frypan tuned to A6 and he did the Danny Stewart sounds and then he usd th split strg techique; bullet nose oneand C# andlower part of bar slanted to make A into G# and played the entire song this way and it sounded like C#m. I have tried ever since but usuall drop the bar about the 4th measure. Oh well. CC

Ok. I'm sending you about 6 fotos of this same yr 78 ? I believe so all of you who remember this can see if you have changed any. I am still the handsome rogue with the great head of hair as in the pics. I am sending captions for each foto to bring back memories. I think all would like allof these pics if it is not too much trouble to post them and the captions. Wally Pfiffer, Jess Hurt, and the mighty Vern Cornwall as well as Dwight Harris are quite prevalent. cc

I always played it with a C# minor tuning. It just seemed to fit there.

Roy sent the song to me, email, and it sure is beautiful. He always does so well on everything he plays....al
