I received a nice set of CDs from the Japanese steel guitarist Sugino Nob. His web site is in Japanese, but he has samples of his playing here.I think he has a unique voice on the steel. If I had to compare him to anyone it would probably be David Lindley, but only on some of his songs. It's always interesting to me to see where people are taking the steel guitar. ------------------ Brad's Page of Steel A web site devoted to acoustic & electric lap steel guitars [This message was edited by Brad Bechtel on 21 February 2006 at 03:20 PM.]

Using Google's auto translation option, I could get to a sales page that was only partially translated but does have his email address. When I try to post that page here it reverts to his home page. The label is called Twins Records. Any Japanese-speaking members on the forum?[This message was edited by Andy Volk on 22 February 2006 at 07:22 AM.]

Wow! Cool music! Mr. Sugino seems to have been playing lap steel as professional since late 70s. I will post here again if I hear from him regarding his CD. |

Many Japanese have taken to both lap steel, non-pedal, and pedal steel guitars. There is a profound interest in steel guitar in Japan. It is nice to hear the variational playing styles of the Japanese. We have a contingent of Japanese players coming from Japan every 2 years, who play at the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Convention in Honolulu, Hawaii. Also at this international convention in Honolulu, steel guitar players have come from all over the world to bring their various stylings, i.e. England, Finland, Switzerland, Germany, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, Japan, etc. Aloha, Don |

Hi Brad, Thank you very much for posting a message about me! Now I'm trying to find a way to sell my CDs outside Japan. And waiting for the answers from my agent living in Los Angeles. I will make a decision in a few days,I guess. I made a page in English about my CDs and my e-mail address. You also can reach it from the MP3 page. http://www.h6.dion.ne.jp/~lapsteel/Pages/forOVS.html/

I agree with Steinar. I have been so amazed by his steel sound (Gibson, Supro, Superior, & etc.) The music is very pure and driving, and he is a real gentleman. He reduced the price of the CDs especially for people outside Japan! |

I just checked it out. Really interesting (and very diverse) stuff! He seems to have a good command of a very wide variety of styles, which makes me wonder if he's ever been a studio session musician, too? The tone he gets on the last tune in the second live clip really nails the Sonny Landreth "Dumble amp on the verge of expolsion" tone. Sweet...
