I tried one in a London store yesterday, after all the slagging it had garnered I just had to give it a go. First impressions was that it had similar character to my mates Fender 8 de-lux. nice stringy sound, bit like an early ricky, short scale 22.5, easy slants, nice finish, great case, single line work sang out. Am I going mad ? I thought it was fantastic! |

I like my new Fender a lot. It's a bit brash and bright--needs some taming with the amp controls, and with my touch, too. That said, I've noticed in recording with it that it quite nicely finds its own space in a mix. And I've gotten a lot of positive comments about my steel tone since I've started gigging with it. |

I have a friend that got one, he changed a cap in it and it sounds better but still not up to snuff for the price. |

I remember all the negative feedback on the FS-52 a while back but would still like to hear and play one. Can anyone post a sound sample? |

I have a Fender Stringmaster D8 ('62), a Georgeboard lap model and one of these FS-52's. I just had the pickup replaced on mine yesterday. Had my local guy put in a Seymour Duncan 'Little '59' on Steinar's recommendation(Thanks Steinar!) 100% improvement in tone! If they would just put a better pickup in these they would sell a lot more of them. Very nice finish, stays in tune, accurate, nice case. IMHO they're getting partly unjustified bad reviews here mostly because of the pickup, the rest is very good. |

I'm sorry, but it's NOT RIGHT that you should have to play top dollar for a name brand like "Fender" and the only way to play it out is to replace the pup!!!! A player is much better off buying a Artisan from Musicians Freind for $79...(It sounds much better than the new Fender, so you might not even have to change the pup...a few hundred saved)... |

Maybe I'll send mine to Roy Thomson. He can make any guitar sound wonderful . . |

I agree, you shouldn't have to replace a pup right from the get go, but I'm really glad I did. The rest of it, quality wise, is quite good. I was going to sell it but it's a keeper now. |

Maybe Fender doesn't realize it has a pickup, it is listed on Fender's web site under "Acoustics". |

How much are these Fenders going for? In my experience, on pretty much every 'regular' (= non-lap-steel) guitar below, say, 500 $, the pickups have to be changed for really useable, good results (OK, my Danelectro 56 Pro is the exception to the rule). No big deal, either, since you can get GREAT cheap replacements from either Kent Armstrong or GFS (www.guitarfetish.com). |

Musician's Friend jacked their price up to $450, sheeesh. I never could get the $342 site to work right, I think it's in Europe and shipping would be out of sight. |

Kevin, I've been sorta interested in that Fender Deluxe 8 (which is actually a single neck stringmaster). I heard that Scotty's Music in St. Louis is now selling them new. Just wondering what your opinion of them might be. Nick[This message was edited by Nick Reed on 13 March 2006 at 01:50 PM.] |
