Is this guitar still a 'Collectable' considering that it has had a jack socket put where the tone knob was, and the hole for the jack socket filled in, AND the case that it was sold with isn't the case it has now, the original had an amplifier 'Built-in' http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7405070421 The seller seems to think it's worth is equal to this, http://www.northcoastguitars.com.au/premvox.html I have one with the ORIGINAL case/Amplifier and wouldn't expect to get more than $1,200. Or am I just being my usual 'Fussy' contrary self ?------------------ quote: Steel players do it without fretting

To the best of my knowledge nobody knows anything certain about these UK assembled Ricks. The Rickenbacker company denies any involvement which, obviously, is total cr*p.I've seen a fair number of them over the last 30 years and am convinced that most of them didn't come with case amps. I don't know where Northshore guitars got their info. about case fittings from, but it seems kosher to me. Mine is in a rectangular Rick style case which has identical fittings to the fitted case in the Northshore pictures. The fittings on these seem different to US Rick cases. Perhaps someone in the US could comment. Re jack sockets. I don't think any Premiervox guitars had them. I think originally they were all hardwired. Mine has a rather stomach turning surgical pink (which makes me think of urostomies) lead which runs to a big bakelite phone plug. This exits the guitar in what might be described as the standard Tele. position via a drilled hole with no metal fitting. Have you seen the one at Frets.co.uk which is badged as a Selmer? It has only one, presumably, Vol. knob. As for this one, or these generally, being collectable. I am amazed that all the bakelite Ricks are still affordable. For some reason the arty bastards who collect bakelite or art deco generally havn't caught on to them yet. |

It's strange how supposedly less than 90 of these Spanish neck Nakelite guitars were made, and they're considered "rare birds" but at least a dozen have turned up on Ebay and Vintage dealer classiffieds in the last couple years, with this latest one on Ebay, that makes about seven that have turned up in the UK alone. I had one and later traded it away, it was just about impractical to play, I was always worried about dropping it, as it was very heavy and slippery. It would have made a nice display piece though for the collector or decorator. |
