Hold on to your seats folks, This one is going to be one super show.
How about 4 major Players, 2 of them being SGHOF Members.

Headlinig this show will be the Lovely and Talented Laney Hicks and by the way, she just might bring her steel player, Some Guy named Hicks, After hearing her sing on Steelradio.com, I sort of forgot his first name. Lot of talent in that Hicks family.
All Joking aside, Russ Hicks is one of the most Talented Musicians to ever walk the streets of Nashville and a lot of other places. In addition to being a Super talented musician who plays multiple instruments, He is one of the hardest working and foremost Steel Guitarists of our time.

Next will be Sonny Curtis.

Sonny was born in Chillicothe, Ohio, the second of three children. He showed little evidence of early interest in the steel guitar. In fact, he said, "until just before I graduated from high school, I hated the sound of it." But while delivering papers one day, he met a customer who played steel at local dances and the two started talking about the instrument. The friend's name was Bobby Irwin. Bobby began playing records for Sonny by a steel guitarist named Jerry Byrd . Before long, the youngster was accompanying Bobby to dances in order to watch him play. "Frankly, it took listening to the instrument live to capture my interest," Sonny said. "I was fascinated by the use of the bar, the fact that the instrument wasn't fretted, and the player's ability to make the proper notes by positioning the bar."
"I also admired another local steel player whose name was Marshall Looney. When his family asked Sonny what he wanted for graduation, he said a steel guitar. His sister Marjorie happily obliged. Sonny took lessons for a couple of months, but became disgusted because of having to learn by note. He just wanted to get that "Nashville Sound" so he started studying on his own. Becoming discouraged he decided to play the mandolin. Becoming even further discouraged, he turned back to the steel. "When Bud Issacs came along with pedals, I really dug that sound," Sonny recalls. Then I heard Buddy Emmons and he became my all time idol. It wasn't until two years later that he got his first amp. "I used to wait until everyone went to bed and I would practice in my bedroom. The house was quiet enough for me to hear the guitar sounds.I didn't have anyone to help me so I set up the guitar and put the tuning on it that later turned out to be inverted to the way everyone else plays. Roger Blevins who then played for Dusty Owens on the Wheeling Jamboree, was the first person to tell me I was playing backwards. Sonny's first professional job was working with Bobby Bare in a Wellston, Ohio, club. Soon Bobby put out a hit single called "The All American Boy" and left the area to tour. Sonny continued to work local clubs working with Johnny Paycheck (who was then Donny Young). Sonny made a few tapes at a friend's house, one of which landed in the hands of a popular performer named George Jones. George asked Sonny to join the Jones Boys, which consisted of Charley Justice, Don, Gary and Arnie Adams. Their first gig was a 1964 Jimmy Dean television show in New York City (ABC). Sonny traveled with George from 1964 until 1969 when he married Tammy Wynette. He then traveled with George & Tammy until 1975. When George and Tammy divorced, he stayed with Tammy until 1980. During these years with George and Tammy, Sonny's travels took him to all 50 states and 15 foreign countries.

Returning from the May Show will be SGHOF Memeber Walter Haynes.

Walter has offered to be a regular on The Southern Steel Guitar Convention. We are Truly blessed to have this kind of participation and dedication from such a Great player as Walter and One of the nicest, most humble guys around.
WALTER HAYNES WENT TO NASHVILLE AT AGE 18 FROM KINGSPORT, TENNESSEE TO PLAY HIS FIDDLE AND STEEL GUITAR ON THE GRAND OLE OPRY. AS A STAFF MUSICIAN ON THE OPRY FOR 13 YEARS, HAYNES WAS HIRED BY LITTLE JIMMY DICKENS AND PERFORMED AND TRAVELED WITH DICKENS FOR 6 YEARS PLAYING STEEL GUITAR. HAYNES ALSO WAS A SESSION MUSICIAN WHILE PLAYING ON THE GRAND OLE OPRY. HE PLAYED STEEL GUITAR, ELECTRIC AND FLAT-TOP GUITAR ON THE SESSIONS. IN ADDITION TO THE OPRY AND SESSION WORK, HAYNES PLAYED ON AN EARLY MORNING RADIO PROGRAM WITH WSM TELEVISION. WHILE ON THE OPRY AND IN THE SESSIONS, HAYNES PLAYED WITH ALL THE TOP STARS IN THE INDUSTRY INCLUDING PATSY CLINE, HANK WILLIAMS, SR. AND JR., WAYLON JENNINGS, WILLIE NELSON, JOHNNY CASH, THE OAK RIDGE BOYS, LARRY GATLIN AND THE GATLIN BROTHERS, BARBARA MANDRELL, EMMYLOU HARRIS, RICKY SKAGGS, MEL TILLIS, AND BILL ANDERSON, TO NAME A FEW. WALTER PLAYED STEEL ON PATSY’S RECORDINGS ON DECCA RECORDS AND PLAYED ON HER OPRY AND TELEVISION APPEARANCES. WALTER IS FONDLY REFERRED TO AS PATSY CLINE’S STEEL GUITAR PLAYER. WALTER WENT TO WORK FOR MOSS ROSE PUBLISHING AS DIRECTOR WHERE HE GOT 100 SONGS RECORDED THE FIRST YEAR. IT WAS THERE THAT HE STARTED DOING INDEPENDENT RECORDINGS AS PRODUCER. LATER, HE HEADED KAPP RECORDS, A DIVISION OF MCA. THEN HE TRANSFERRED TO DECCA AS AN ASSISTANT TO OWEN BRADLEY. OWEN SOON TURNED A LOT OF THE ROSTER OVER TO WALTER. SOME OF THE NAMES WERE MARTY ROBBINS, CAL SMITH, JEANNE PRUETT, JACK GREEN, AND JEANNIE SEELEY. HAYNES PRODUCED THE "FATHER OF BLUEGRASS", BILL MONROE, FOR MCA RECORDS FOR 13 YEARS. AT A TIME WHEN OWEN BRADLEY WAS HOSPITALIZED, HE TURNED TO WALTER TO PRODUCE CONWAY TWITTY AND LORETTA LYNN. WALTER SPENT 12 YEARS WITH MCA RECORDS.
IN 1973, WALTER PRODUCED TWO OF THE TOP 5 SONGS IN THE NATION WHICH WERE "SATIN SHEETS" WITH ARTIST JEANNE PRUETT AND "THE LORD KNOWS I’M DRINKING" WITH ARTIST CAL SMITH. IN 1974, HAYNES HAD THE SONG OF THE YEAR WITH CAL SMITH’S "COUNTRY BUMPKIN" WHICH WON HIM THE PRIZED PRODUCER OF THE YEAR AWARD MAKING HIM A VICE-PRESIDENT THE LAST 3 YEARS HE WAS AT MCA RECORDS. HAYNES DECIDED TO BECOME AN INDEPENDENT PRODUCER AND WAS HIRED AS A CONSULTANT FOR IBC RECORDS, A NEW INDEPENDENT RECORD COMPANY WHICH HAYNES BROUGHT TO THE NUMBER TWO INDEPENDENT LABEL IN THE NATION THE FIRST YEAR WITH JEANNE PRUETT’S THREE CONSECUTIVE TOP TEN HITS. HAYNES IS AN ACCOMPLISHED SONGWRITER WITH MANY HITS TO HIS CREDIT AS WELL AS HIS PRODUCTION ACCOMPLISHMENTS. IN 1999, WALTER'S PUBLISHING COMPANY HAD A DARRYL SINGLETARY SINGLE ON GIANT RECORDS ENTITLED, "THE NOTE". WALTER HAS BUILT THREE, 24 -TRACK RECORDING STUDIOS, AND NOW HAS WALTER HAYNES PRODUCTIONS AND RECORDING IN PIGEON FORGE TENNESSEE. RECENTLY, WALTER HAS BEEN INDUCTED INTO THE HALL OF FAME OF THE NORTH AMERICAN COUNTRY MUSIC ASSOCIATION INT’L,THE TEXAS INDEPENDENT COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME FOR THE YEAR 2000, AND WAS INDUCTED INTO THE STEEL GUITAR HALL OF FAME IN 2003. WALTER IS STILL PLAYING HIS STEEL GUITAR AND FIDDLE, RECORDING, PRODUCING, PUBLISHING, MANAGING AND WRITING SONGS...RETIRED????...NO WAY!!!!!!!!!!

And in addition to the above named players will be our good friend and SGHOF member, Herby Wallace.

Just about always a regular at Saluda and one of the premier players in the world. When Herby gets behind his guitar, you might hear something lightning fast or soft and sweet. This man can do it all. One of my heroes for sure.
A BEGINNING PLAYER AT AGE 9, HE WAS PERFORMING ON LOCAL TELEVISION
SHOWS AND PLAYING CLUBS SIX NIGHTS A WEEK BY 16. HE WOULD THEN TOUR
FOR THE NEXT 14 YEARS WITH MORE THAN 2000 SESSIONS, AND APPEAR ON MANY
MAJOR TV SHOWS. A MASTERFUL PERFORMER WITH EQUAL FACILITY IN BOTH
POPULAR TUNINGS. HIS 12 INSTRUMENTAL ALBUMS, DOZENS OF INSTRUMENTAL
COURSES, CONCERTS AND SEMINARS CONTINUE TO ADD TO HIS GROWING LEGACY.

BORN: JUNE 5, 1947 CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE
INDUCTED: 2001

As always, our world class staff band, Woody Ledford and Johnny Thomas on Guitars, Wayne(The energizer Bunny) Smith on Bass. Jim Hartley, Wayne Stowers and Jerry Reece tag teaming it on Drums. These guys can get the job done and every one of them a superpicker. They have been getting a lot of recognition at several events over in Georgia and its about time. They are worth the price of admission alone.

Rob Parker, The steel players best friend will be helping out with the singing chores, and hopefully Jerry Braswell again. These guys are super talents and Class Acts in their own right.

The Georgia Steel Guitar Association AKA The Georgia Mule Gang will be carpooling again and they are some of our very strongest supporters.

Then you add all our regulars from SC and other states and It makes for a great time. Joe Turner was super in May along with Guitarist Jerry Burns, great Picking. David Christmas played his first Show in May a did a super Job, No excuses anymore Brother David, you are now on the schedule.

While I'm at it, can't forget my Fellow Tarheels That come down for our show from Fayetteville, Thomasville, Charlotte, Smithfield and all the other big Cities to the nawth.

You have it all backwards, Roy Rodgers kicked Jerry in the side when he was groveling for an autograph.

Gabby Hayes was ole Roy's side kick and Jerry's Younger Brother.

Larry Moore heard "Stephen said Hello" many times at the May show, even once on my Talkback mic on the pa as he was finishing his set. So I think he missed you .

I have 2 new amps and they are louder than yours,600 watts stereo I don't think there will be any questions about amps, I also have a new guitar that has a Peavey T-60 neck on a Tele Northern (hard)Ash Body and Duncan Pickups. It weighs almost 14 lbs.

Top That my brother. I hear you have a new steel , R U ready to play a show yet.
Our Bro, David Christmas played his first show and did a great Job in May

I'm glad you are aware of who is boss in that family. He, who doesn't will not stay married very long, I know that from hard experience.

Looking forward to this one and a even bigger crowd than the February show, which had a record breaking crowd.

In August of next year(2005) will be Southern Steel Guitar Convention #75. Hope to really pull the stops out on that one and have a big celebration.

You have already picked a bunch with The GASGA GANG and the Staff Band. Aren't all those guys great?

Charles Reece just had surgery and will be moving a little slow for the next show, but Wild Horses won't keep him away. I told everybody if Buddy Walker gets sick, I'm Slashing both my Wrists.

Seriously, nothing will stop this show from going on, The quality of the folks that play there Regular and attendees would handle it just fine. Its like a big Family reunion and Everyone on this forum should come to Saluda just once and We will have you hooked on it.
Theres nothing like it anywhere. Its a fun thing and doing good for the Shriners Childrens Hospitals. I'm extremely proud to be a small part of it, Even tho I'm busier than a one arm drummer on a Del Reeves Show

John...It upset me to no end to miss the May show, but our house had just been finished and we were movin' in. It will take an act of Congress to keep me away in August! When you don't get to make Saluda, it's like missing a family reunion. What a wonderful family it is, too. So, back to getting the mules ready, they've been out of training for a while! See you all there in August.

Roger we missed you, But Don was there to represent the family. Couldn't get him to pick tho, but he took a lot of pictures.

Go Easy on the Mules and don't feed them too many varsity hot dogs. Remember on the trip, No vasrsity hot dogs for the mules until you are well past Augusta and the state line, don't need any speeding tickets.

Make sure waynes porta potty is well secured and won't fall off the back, It would be a big mess on I-20.

I figured something out about Ole Wayne at the last show, the first thing he does when he gets to Saluda is go to the rest room.

That Ole Hillbilly is fascinated with our indoor plumbing. I went in Behind him and he was in one of the stalls Flushing the Commode over and over and saying "Lord , Don't that beat all". Well, I guess thats to be expected, It don't take much to amuse a Drummer.

Looking forward to seeing all my Ga. Brothers and Sisters again, me being a Cracker by birth.

A Chance to own a piece of Steel Guitar History!!!

Fran Newman has Graciously Donated Jeff's Camouflage Pak-A-Seat to the Saluda Shrine Club. This is a very special seat that a very specal man sat on, played and taught some very special music to some very special students.
I'm sure anyone who loves the Steel Guitar and Jeff Newman would treasure this seat. However you will have to be present at the Sunday August 15th Southern Steel Guitar Convention #71 to place your bids.

This seat will be auctioned off at the Sunday August 15th Show and the proceeds will go towards the efforts of the Saluda Shrine Club for the Shriners Childrens Hospitals. No Telephone Bids Please!!
Please do not operate Cell Phones in the Saluda Shrine Club, it interferes with the Amplifiers and PA System.

Randy Beavers will be bringing this down with him in addition to Jeffs latest CD, Which will be on sale at this show.

Fran is such a Gracious lady, While in her Grief and attempting to continue the business She and Jeff built, has time to think of others, especially the Shriners Childrens Hospitals.

God Bless you and keep you strong Fran Newman and Randy Beavers too who has been a pillar of strenth and support for the Newman Family!

We Dedicated the May Show to the Memory of Jeff Newman and Plan to Continue That as a Tradition on all February Shows at Saluda.

Jeff always played the February Shows at Saluda.

Thank You Jeff & Fran for your support over the years.

In addition to the Auction of Jeff's Pack a Seat, We still have some Tickets left to sell on the raffle for The Walker Seat donated by Ray Walker. The Total Number of tickets for this raffle has been reduced from 50 to 30 tickets @ $10 each. So a 1 in 30 chance of winning a Walker Seat is pretty good odds. We hope to sell the remaining tickets and draw the winning ticket on Sat Evening August 14th. A reminder that the Sat afternoon jam playing along to tracks is now starting at 3 PM until 6 PM, We will break for 1 hour to get ready for the Legendary Sat night Jam with Band and start that at 7 pm until we are done..

I know I sent you an e:mail to this effect, but I think a post is in order as a reminder to all. All of us, drummers and musicians alike, sometimes forget to say thanks for all your hard work. I know it's not easy, especially when everything changes every thirty minutes or so. Anyway, from all of us, thanks for your efforts on behalf of the show and the Shriner's hospital.

I just spoke to Bob, and we will be there ready to go by nine.

PS By the way, when I'm on, I need a little steel in my monitor, a little more vocal in my monitor(espedially when Laney is on), I'll need a vocal mic(I prefer a gooseneck to a boom). Plus, move the drums over about two feet to the left, no, make that three, I can never be seen in the pictures. And.....................Hey, just funnin' whicha.

Folks,
Do you remember The Mom And Pop drive ins and Sandwich shops before Fast Food Joints arrived on every block and Interstate Highway exit?

Well you can still get good food like it used to be at the Saluda Shows.

Great South Carolina Style BBQ Sandwiches, Hamburgers, Fries and Hot Dogs. Don't pass up a slice of Mrs Buddy Walker's Delicious Homemade cake for dessert.

Great Music, Food and Southern Hospitality is what you will find at Saluda

Changes At Saluda

We, actually Buddy Walker with some volunteers, are making some changes to the sound system at Saluda. Hopefully this will make things run smoother during the shows. Most obvious, will be the addition of a sound booth/equipment room and to the players the greatly reduced number of wires and cables running around to various points on the stage floor.

We are Gonna do an experiment with miking the instruments this time and if it works out, by the November show all Amps on Stage will be miked from the overhead with Choir Mics eliminating the need for someone to be moving Mic's while a player is trying to set up. This should let the show flow a lot smoother and make life a little easier for the players and the Ole Soundman. All of this should eliminate some dead time between players also.

All of this is being done to make Saluda a little less artificial, more natural sounding and reduce a lot of clutter and confusion on the stage. Also a lot more enjoyable for the players and People who attend the Southern Steel Guitar Conventions.

All of this is being done with donated labor and materials also, My Thanks to the folks who Donated and helped.

I'm getting old and my memory sometimes isn't what it used to be. Couple that with concern over my good friend Bill Stafford's Ruptured Appendix during the May show and Bill was scheduled to be on that show, that I completely forgot about a Donation by one of our most loyal supporters, a good man who played his first show at Saluda.

David Christmas generously donated one of his super guitar amp stands to be raffled off at the May show. These are hand made by Bro David and are super quality, nothing like the cheaply made stuff you find in Guitar Center and other discount music stores. I just found out yesterday, from Buddy that I had never posted anything on this and need to correct that oversight.
Like the walker seat we still have a few more tickets to sell on the raffle for This great guitar amp stand @ $5 each

As I have mentioned before , David played his first show at Saluda, Sharing The Stage with Wayne Williams and You would have never known that it was his first by listening to him. He sure got some Great tone out of that CLR steel guitar and the quality of the playing sure matched the tone. I have decided I need to carry a notepad with me and write things down. That surely is a sign of getting Old.

Received word from Ray Walker yesterday that he will have a display of Walker Seats again at the August Show. Look em over, try them out and Check out all the neat Seats and Merchandise Ray has to offer. Lots of Famous butts sitting on Walker Seats, There must be some good reason.

I still think he needs to turn me and his brother Charlie loose in the shop We had some neat ideas for Walker Seats.

All we needed was the Company Credit card and we would have been in business. implementing some of our revolutionary ideas for Walker seats. as the Recliner Seat for Laid back Steelers and the Butt kicker seat complete with remote control for the wives. I have the first one of each sold to Donna Dodd. the butt kicker to keep ole Tommy in line.

Ray just hasn't come around to Charlies and my way of thinking, but we are going to be doing some serious lobbying with him at the August show.

Smack him again Charlie! , Now Ray , How about that Credit card What do you mean by NEVER!

Mike,

It will be a great show, even a better show if you could be there. I'd love to see you make it to Saluda one of these days, I think alot of folks would add you to their list of favorite players like I have.

Sorry I missed you on Saturday but Bob and I didn't get to Nashville until 5:00. Loved your set Sunday though. See ya Tuesday night.

I'm pretty sure he will be there , but until I hear from him confirming it, I won't post his name. Don't you just luv surprises?

This show keeps growing and Growing and its gonna be a Great One. Better start making plans now, don't miss this one. I keep saying that, but this time is going to be a record setting show again.

Mike, I have a welcome mat with your name on it, anytime you want to come down, just drop in, we can always work in an extra player in the schedule, thats why there is no ending time either day. We are flexible, just like the ole road busses.

Have the upcoming Show in August and then one in November, then Feb and May.

In August 2005, will be the 75th Southern Steel Guitar Convention. We are already looking for Ideas on how to Celebrate. If we get enough response, might have to hold it outside for a Full Two Day Show. Still looking for suggestions, If anybody has any ideas, let us know.

Hey John...the Ga. gang may still be recuperating from our Sunday Shindig,,,,I truly appreciate them making the drive up here and I hope it was worth the trip....also all the other steelers that came from out of state (eight states represented)....IMHO Doug Jernigan's set was worth all the gold in California...when we finally got him out of the boat and took away BOTH of his fishing poles...Big Jim Vest and his model boats were truly amazing and the list goes on and on, but that's another post...I can't wait til August,,,see you then,

If this show gets any bigger we are going to have to do it two players at a time, or go to two full days.

I'm overwhelmed with the response, we have been getting from all levels of Talent and experience. Every player and donator's contribution to our events is really appreciated. When you have 70 shows under your belt like Buddy Walker and Charles Reece have, You have to be doing something right for it to be growing like it is.

This all adds up to more money for the Shriners Childrens Hospitals.

It has been humbling for me to be allowed to be a part of this and the support from a lot of my friends from my Nashville days is Heartwarming. I receive a lot more than I give at Saluda, especially in the way of being able to see my friends from present and former days four times a year every year.
I look forward to the day that I get to see everyone I knew in Nashburg come to Saluda.

We Shouldn't ever forget the Contrubution That Bobby Lee makes as operator of this forum, without him and this Forum, we wouldn't have a very good way of getting the word out to the people who support our events.

Bill Ferguson has asked the audiences at our events where they learned about us and the majority say its The Steel Guitar Forum. We always ask the Audiences to support our vendors at each and every one of our shows, I also ask that you Check out the merchandise that is for sale on this forum and support it as well as at our shows, without the forum, we would be shooting in the dark and not be able to continue our work for the Shriners Childrens Hospital at the level we are at now.
Thanks
John
