Way back in 1997, before Mac passed away, a group of friends got together to honor Mac at the Atlanta Steel Guitar Extravaganza.
Sadly no video taping was allowed EXCEPT the award ceremony of which I was not only honored to present a plaque, but also to play Mac's and my favorite song.
It's a little long (13 min) but I think well worth the watch. You should see some VERY familiar faces if you watch closely.

Bill, Thanks for posting the tribute to Mac.
I was there in the audience. Mac was a person of so many talents. He was a true artist in every respect. I had the privilege of working with him for over 12 years at WSB-TV.
Mac was always ready to share his knowledge about the steel guitar, and music.
He was part of the country music scene from the early days of the WSB Barn dance and had many stories about the shows and the performers.
I miss Mac and our friendship.

Thanks Bill. Mac was a treasure. I was there that night too and it was great as others have already stated here.

He was so humble. I'll never forget "Oh honey, I can't play thumb G"

That was so nice Bill!
Thank you.
I have never heard Mac but
noted all Carl Dixon had to say
about him and his Jerry Byrd "sound".

Your playing of "The Waltz" was
exceptional.

Wonderful. I was there that day and enjoyed it so much.

I miss Mac very much. I drive by the street you turned off of Hway 78 to get to his house every day and I think about him. He was a very forward thinking man. He loved music and even late in his life I would take him CDs of modern jazz and classical music and he would just beam when we would listen to great players. He was a mechanical genius and would help me any time I had a question. I always say that Mac is a fellow that I did not meet early enough in my life. He had so much knowledge about steel guitar, music, electronics---just amazing. I wish I could have known him much earlier so I could have learned more from him.

I have been asked by several to identify who Mac Atcheson was.

Mac was one of the original (and for the entire time) members of the Peachtree Cowboys. Jack Green was also a member for many years.

Mac played on many of the old country music radio shows. He was without a doubt one of the finest players ever to sit behind a steel.

Mac worked for WSB television in Atlanta for about 40 years. Mac hand built all the sets for the news shows and any other live show produced at WSB.

Mac was known and respected by many of the great steel guitarists of our time.

When I first met Mac, I knew that I wanted to learn to play the steel guitar. Although I knew I could never be as good as Mac, I sure have given it my best shot for the past 35 years.

If it could be done with your hands, Mac could do it. He was the most talented individual I ever met and he became like a 2nd father to me.

Here is a pic of Mac from one of the early TV shows on WSB Barn Dance in Atlanta, GA

I could go on and on, but hopefully this will give you a little history.

Hey Bill,

I just watched the tribute to mac at the steel guitar extravaganza. That was great! Brought back memories. Sure do miss the shows. Anyway, mac was a great person. I feel like I'm repeating myself from another topic but, it's the truth...I was very blessed to have met him. No wonder you had such an interest in "The Waltz you saved for me" Take care....myra

Bill,

Thanks for bringing this in . . .

I recall that well, as it was the first time I had heard you play Macs take on the Waltz, which so pleasantly surprised me . . .

. . . and I admire your reverence toward your late friend.
