quote: given that practically all the open tunings (affected by the various pull combinations) can be sweetened up (tempered) better than most instruments can, and that quality carries out onto the bar, no matter where you put it
That's why we have the discussions - because we have the options. Most other instruments that play chords don't have the option to sweeten them, so there is nothing to discuss. We play with a lot of those instruments, and can choose to match their out-of-tuneness, or sweeten things up. So we have decisions to make, and therefore discussions. They don't. It is very much a unique steel guitar dilemma. |

Well yes, that's a good point, but discussions are one thing and arguments are another. I think that once the mathematical imperfection concepts are finally understood by all involved, there's got to be a point where there is nothing left to argue over and it's just frankly time to apply the rubber to the road - sometimes that's the only way. |

If you want to hear the rubber hit the road, record every rehearsal and gig you play. Review the tapes and continually hone your ability. Continuous improvement to all aspects of ones playing, that's a big part of what make it fun!

All this makes my head hurt too. But now I know why I can't use a tuner on an instrument without tweaking by ear afterward. |

Get a Peterson tuner with preset temperments and then you won't.And I do record my gigs usually. I'm just saying that the debate is getting old for continuing without either comprehensive feedback, or something new brought to the table... But I guess I can only speak for myself. |
